>>>I was under the impression I would get a new contract if we went up and it wasn’t sorted so I moved back to Bristol. “If the club want to sort me out (with a new contract) then obviously I’ll make the commitment to move back up, but they never honoured their part so I decided to move back to Bristol with my family.” The former England under-21 international’s present deal expires at the end of this season and Challis insists he would love to extend his stay at Gay Meadow.<<< Is this another thing to hang on Quinny? ? I'm not sure, he has a contract till the end of this season and not too many players get contracted for longer at our level.

Well worded to the press,Ten men out of contract at the end of the season, and he would think about moving from Bristol if he was hired again. As a father well though, but as a public statement it seems a little like blackmail.

Challis has had a poor few games but I don't blame him for not selling up his house and moving given that he is currently employed for only another 6 months. We often make unreasonable demands of our footballers. Do enough to earn another contract Trev

Bloomin nerve suggesting he has the right not to IMO. Yes Trev, that's a normal days work for many who are at work from dark to dark and then have travelling on top. As for getting up at 7am.....cue HH!

I think this is a tough one to call
Trev was outstanding for us
Then suddenly in the last 6 weeks or so his form has dipped dramatically
Is it because he finally realised the club had reneged on their agreement?
Or is it because he moved?
Or did he move because he feels let down by the club and doesn't expect a new contract?
To me it looks like he has been screwed by STFC and let down, and that is why his form dipped and he moved back to Bristol

Totally agree, if he was assured a new contract on promotion he should receive reguardless of his recent performances. Sounds like the bloke has been s**tted on from a great height

We dont need him, let him sulk in the reserves for the remainder of his contract, then in the summer we can bring in someone better, thats the whole point isnt it !

Hmm seems to me like there's more to this than what's been said above. First of all, I doubt we would have gotten out of the Conf without Challis - he filled the gaping hole at left back with aplomb, and scored a vital penno at the Brittania when Lukie couldn't. Second, we are lacking in left sided players and Trev on song is as good down that side as Mossy is on t'other IMO. Third, he's come back from injury and hasn't yet found his form - how much is down to the uncertainty over his contract - who can say? Finally, reference Histon - wasn't there, but he's not the 1st Town player to gob off at the fans - Jemmo, Cramby? On balance, I think Trev is a quality player whose left foot is a vital ingredient. He is well capable of playing at this level and above. I think we should get off his back, make him feel wanted and do all we can to keep him. Once we get Sammy back fit, to play in front of him, I think GP will like what he sees

Crikey people's opinions change quickly.
Look at it from Chalis's point of view - if he has a house say in Bristol then what's the point of him selling up and moving to Shrewsbury if he has no job security?
I know Challis hasn't been brilliant lately but I still rate him very highly as a left back. He's certainly one of the best left backs we've had for a few years now

Travelling that far every ( ) day is tiring. I know I have usually had enough doing that journey only once a week!

How much fuel wise does it cost to travel to bristol and back/ I would have thought it would be more to do that than rent a property in Telford,yt sounds like the guy is sulking to me, get rid and quick i say, he obviously isnt committed to the cause, if he was he would knuckle down, work hard and earn a new contract.
People who expect things to land on their plate without working for it get what they deserve - **** all !

Crikey people's opinions change quickly. Too right Phil Don't people think it is Trev who may have been screwed by the club over this one? When had he ever let us down prior to the last month or so? Work it out! He has a family to support, he was promised a deal and was 100% commited to our cause. Even earlier in the season when we were struggling he was still 100% committed, I am thinking of game like Boston and some of the tackles he put in Now he has realised he is not going to get what he has been promised, so does not want to leave himself open to financial risk AND he is saying he will willingly move back if his future here is secure! What exactly is the problem with that? Some people need to get a grip, 6 weeks ago he was up there for player of the season just behind Moss and now the lynch mob is after him No-one can defend his current form, or his comments to a fan at Histon, but why are we trying to condemn the player and let the club push yet another decent player out of the club?

If Challis is not 100% committed, can we really afford to carry him in our fight for survival?
Travel to and from Bristol is going to cost at least £20 a day i would have thought, thats at least £450.00 per month, not to mention the wear and tear on the car, snacks whilst driving etc...
£450.00 per month is enough to rent a a decent sized house in Telford.

Why do we keep screwing our players and then expect them to be committed?
If Challis left now thatr would be 8 players in less than 12 months, is that really what we need?
give the lad a new contract and some job security, and then watch him return to his former glory

and if the club have screwed trev over a new contract, what message does that send to all the other players looking for a new contract in the summer?
Instead of one player sad at a commitment reneged on we have half adozen first team players worried about their futures and playing for themselves not the team

TBH - Its not the responsibility of Gary Peters for promises made by Jimmy Quinn, Challis will have to work hard to earn a new contract, just like the other ten players, if hes not committed enough to live in the area and and his form drops because of his sulking, i personally think we would be better off without him.
Unlesds of course you think it should be Rolands job to say who stays and who goes?

Post by ThrobsBlackHat on Dec 4, 2004 11:32:02 GMT 1
You are right about Peters
But then I also think it is unfair to blame Challis for moving house when the club have reneged on an agreement to give him a new contract
You have said he is not committed, well in his career with us he never ever gave an impression other than a tireless commitment to the cause, including getting absolutely battered at Telford, as well as some of the most full blooded tackling I have ever seen
It is an awkward situation, and I don;t think trev is to blame, nor is it the responsibility of Gary Peters
It is yet another bad legacy of that muppet Quinn

Quinn will have made that promise with the backing of the board, I'd have thought, Quinn only left a month or so ago.
The club had all summer and september under Quinn/board to offer Challis a contract.
We're talking about a 29 yearold with a family here, not some 19 year old lad who lives with his parents.

Surely the club haven't renaged yet. Even if RW had said to him xyz GP would have to have the final say now and it's too early for him to have any opinion yet. Did Trevor commute in his Telford days? The timing of his "announcement" seems strange. The contract is still there to be earned - isn't it?

I suspect that if he shows commitment and hard work like he did before, GP will offer him a contract. Perhaps the commitment to him was not kept because both Mr. Quinn and the board knew something about the future that we didn't.
We sat behind presumably Mrs Challis and his little girl at Bristol Rovers and he was obviously so pleased that they were there. As I am currently off work I would always say to anyone put your family first and work second.
If he works and gets a new contract and then moves well done to him.
I wasn't at Histon and I'm sorry that he let himself down so badly - obviously they were all having a bad time that time for whatever reason - no excuse I know but do remember he was ace when he first came.

FFS. I can't beleive some of the stuff I'm reading here on Challis.
When on form he is one of our better players. We don't have too many good ones and can't afford to let any of them go. Hadn't heard of the Histon problems (although I was there) but he wasn't the only one not performing that day. He's also not he only one who has had a dip in form of late. Give the bloke a chance.
I can understand supporters moaning about Rioch and others who are crap, but Challis is not really in the same league.

I'm with TBH and grizzly on this one.
Too good a player to lose IMO. Seriously doubt whether we'd find a better replacement.
