Don't worry guys I'm taking the weekend off to someone else a chance.
The 'elites' and Starbucks were a part of yesterdays thread and as we all know those 'elites' and a lot of corporations aren't exactly forthcoming when it comes to taxation. You and I don't have the wherewithal to employ tax experts to reduce our tax bills and I personally am quite happy with what much of my tax is spent on. Without taxes where would the NHS be. We pay our taxes to fund the NHS, pensions, schools, the military and a great many other things. Not everything we pay for is great or even good, but no-one wants to throw the baby out with the bath water, so we have to suck it up.
I would be happy to pay another 1% to improve the NHS, as long as that money was on top of the current budget, that budget is guaranteed to increase by at last inflation and that the extra money was ring-fenced. What is everyone else's opinion on anything to do with taxes?

Honestly? The idea that working families pay 20% income tax, 12% NI, 5% pension contribution and maybe student loans on top coming to 40%+ at the margin of their income is not right, NI is paying for those who have gone before and they are also saving for their own pension. If you throw in 13.8% Employers NI, workers that are at minimum wage levels are very heavily taxed, on the top slice of their income. Personally I don't agree with that much tax, the tax burden on jobs is too high. Happy to shot down by our esteemed co-posters however.

It is our patriotic and social duty to pay tax. I'm not feeling very patriotic nor am I seeing the social cohesion benefit of what I personally perceive as high (and getting higher) taxation. If I had the choice to stop paying, I'd take it.

Double edged sword for me As a pensioner I know how hard I worked, and how much tax etc I paid, during my 50 year working life. To now be taxed again on my various pensions is an absolute disgrace
However on the other side I would be happy to pay more if there was an absolute guarantee that it went directly to the NHS

I think for many people the challenge right now seems to be the sense that we're paying the most tax in decades yet have absolutely nothing to show for it. Everything seems broken. The NHS, prisons, courts, potholes in the roads. The sense of paying even more and still not getting anything back sticks in the throat I imagine for many. For me, if I thought paying a little bit more would fix everything that's ****ed right now, a decent NHS, police on the street, a court system that works etc. I'd probably happily stump up a little more but not if everything is still going to be crap, what's the point, I'm ok so everyone for themselves right?

I've lived and worked in Countries where the tax rate is actually higher than the UK.
Yet the thing that sets those Countries apart is they actually get something for the taxes being paid, I've never felt that here in the UK and so I suspect that Taxes and Government spending is completely bent in the UK.
Take what the new Prime Minister said about the War in Ukraine - they (The Ukrainians) will get 80 billion pounds for as long as it takes, - Now imagine him saying the same about some of the local issues mentioned in this thread, and a cost of a fractions of that 80 Billion.

Like others have said, you don't necessarily mind paying higher taxes but want something to show for it, instead our services seems to getting worse
I have a theory which is much of this country was created/developed during Victorian times and then up to post war, it's meant that a lot of our infrastructure is dated and needs modernising, the problem is there isn't the money (or political will) to overhaul them and instead we just throw sticking plasters on them to keep them going. However those sticking plasters cost billions which ultimately is our money being thrown at it.
The other issue is we are country which is growing in population which includes an ageing population and an increasing number on benefits. That is not a good combination.

There's a degree of the "fear factor"in politics.Take the recent election as an example, the Labour party didn't have the courage to stand up and say taxes will have to increase because of the decades of Tory austerity for fear of losing votes. We all knew that there would be increases and they are now being implemented. It may have cost Labour a few seats if they had been brave but would have made no difference to the Tory anihalation ...which,you may have guessed,I enjoyed... immensely 😁😁😁

Change the income tax bands to Nil to 25k - zero 25k to 50k - 20% 50k to 100k - 25% 100k to 250k - 45% 250k & more - 50%
Do away with the savings interest / dividend income allowance
Makes it more simple, takes a lot of people out of tax, and raises more cash.
Most people don’t mind paying a bit more tax, but those earning more than 250k can afford to shoulder more of the burden.

The services we offer with an aging population can only be covered with tax rises. People don't want to pay more tax, but expect the same level of service as 20 years ago when their wasn't a demographic burden as there is today.
The fact of the matter is if you haven't spent 30 years or so working in the country as a higher rate taxpayer (40% band) you are a beneficiary of the state, most people don't realise this.
The system can be worked around if there is a big enough workforce to pay for everyone's pensions, that isn't the case at the moment which is why it feels like the UK is "broken"

Double edged sword for me As a pensioner I know how hard I worked, and how much tax etc I paid, during my 50 year working life. To now be taxed again on my various pensions is an absolute disgrace I too worked hard for 42 years and as my career progressed I ended up paying tax at the 40% band. I worked in the NHS for all my life so gave the service (as many other thousands do) much more hours than I was contracted to do. And now? It's not just having to pay tax on our pensions. The personal allowances have been frozen for years now and will continue to remain so. If your lucky to save you end up paying tax on your savings (The ISA limits have not been increased for years now). Live in a rural community where local bus services have been withdrawn? That's us. So to get anywhere we have to use a car. Car insurance, vehicle duty, fuel prices, all continue to rise. At the same time try to avoid tyre/wheel damage as you attempt to avoid the ever increasing potholes on our country roads/lanes. I just feel that we are paying more and more in taxes (I include Council Tax in that comment) for what? Everywhere you look public services are being decimated, even our NHS, once the envy of the world is facing a crisis. As for health, NHS dentists are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Our local dentist recently went private and so we had no choice but to sign up to their new terms or try and go elsewhere, an impossible task. More cost.

Price of diesel - political. I honestly didn't set out to start a political thread, but I think that as tax affects pretty much everyone in the country it is something that should be discussed. I don't like paying tax anymore than anyone else, but I accept that it is part and parcel of living in a country like ours and if I needed to pay a smidgen more for the country to be a better place I would be prepared to do so.

Not one private water company has built a single new reservoir, all of which is coming home to roost, so we the then get screwed by significant rises in our water bills.

Dividend income presently taxed at 38% for higher rate people - and if the above follows it 45% on these too, very rich can live off capital and park the income so it is not theirs personally

Additionally the " daily thread" has been reintroduced to stop many on here bickering about the state of the club,RW etc and just going around in circles with regards to something we cannot influence nor change If you disagree, state your reasons why and provide an alternative agenda. So many reductions in allowances and thresholds made by sneaky Sunak and company. There's people going to find new tax demands at tax year end due to reductions in interest allowance 5k allowance? Sunak sneakily reduced that, it's 500 for dividends now. If your earnings are over 17500, then your interest allowance is 1000.

Sunak froze the personal tax allowances when he was Chancellor. Hunt extended the time that this was to remain in force.
Reeves has left it in place despite disingenuously claiming that Labour won't be increasing income tax.
By continuing to leave the freeze on personal allowances in place, that IS a tax increase.
