There's a degree of the "fear factor"in politics.Take the recent election as an example, the Labour party didn't have the courage to stand up and say taxes will have to increase because of the decades of Tory austerity for fear of losing votes. We all knew that there would be increases and they are now being implemented. It may have cost Labour a few seats if they had been brave but would have made no difference to the Tory anihalation ...which,you may have guessed,I enjoyed... immensely 😁😁😁 To be fair, I'm pretty sure they DID say before that taxes would increase.

I can only apologise. It wasn't intended to be political per se, but just about anything can be turned that way. Your mortgage goes up or down - political. Can't get a dentist appointment - political. Price of diesel - political. I honestly didn't set out to start a political thread, but I think that as tax affects pretty much everyone in the country it is something that should be discussed. I don't like paying tax anymore than anyone else, but I accept that it is part and parcel of living in a country like ours and if I needed to pay a smidgen more for the country to be a better place I would be prepared to do so. Of course it's political. It hardly has anything to do with STFC. Are you getting bored on the politics board with only your few far-left buddies to talk to? If I could point you in the direction of the original 'Daily Debate' thread started by Pilch to draw some attention away from the Roland out posts and threads, but also to engage people in non STFC and non-political discussion. There have been several replies to the 3 threads by people who would sit on your side of the political divide, so I don't understand how you can think that this is a way to get politics back on the front page. FYI there are a few regular posters on the politics board that are far from left wing, nevermind far left, but don't let that stand in the way of your argument. I would much rather debate politics with someone from the other side than just spend my time in a lefty echo chamber, so do feel free to pop over and join some of your fellow right wingers. I have apologised once, as I didn't mean for politics to be brought into the discussion, but as I said there is a political slant that can put on most subjects. I could have made this thread political, but I tried not to, even to the extent of not commenting until I replied to your post, unfortunately you decided that it was. Go Kamala 😉

Sunak froze the personal tax allowances when he was Chancellor. Hunt extended the time that this was to remain in force. Reeves has left it in place despite disingenuously claiming that Labour won't be increasing income tax. By continuing to leave the freeze on personal allowances in place, that IS a tax increase. Would be much better to adjust the structure to make those at the bottom pay less by whacking up the personal allowance (the initial tax free band) and get those at the top pay more. This the one thing that Farage had in his "contract with the people" that made sense.

Tax doesn't have to be taxing.
