A comment from (Throb I think, could be wrong) triggered my thoughts of this, with him mentioning the late Ernie Cooksey
Apart from the obvious answers such as Zola at Chelsea, Zamora at Brighton and so on, which player stood out for one in a particular game across the years?
I've got two
Darren Way at Yeovil away, around 2005ish. We lost 4.2, Rodgers sent off, but Darren Way absolutely orchestrated everything that game, utterly sublime
Another was one of th3 first few games at The New Meddah, lost by 4 something to Rochdale, and David Perkins had Neil Ashton tied up like a Pretzel 😂

I always remember Mackandawire having a very good game for Hereford against us. Totally reduced our strikers to doing nothing that day.
Then he went to Millwall (I think) in the Championship before he signed for us.
And we all know what he was like then.

Grant Holt when he was at Rochdale. Ran rings round us if I’ve remembered correctly.

Best player I have seen at either ground was Gordon Strachan for Leeds in our last game in the second tier.
Probably in the same season, Peter Beagrie for Stoke, ran the show and refused to go off when their manager strangely wanted to sub him. I think the game was 0-0 for a long time in one of the most one sided games I've ever seen and I think he finally provided a late breakthrough.

José Dominguez, playing for Birmingham against us mid 90's, I think he was up against Chris Withe who must still have nightmares about him. Last season I was really impressed with Jevani Brown for Exeter and thought Bristol Rovers had got a good signing but it sounds like he hasn't done a lot for them this season.
Two players this season who have stood out for me are Lyle Taylor for Cambridge (very clever striker) and Elliot Lee's second half performance for Wrexham, it just highlighted how we didn't have someone to dominate a midfield like he did.

Rochdale again, Tony Ford in his late 30s strolling around wide right with everything going through him. He controlled the game while hardly moving and I just couldn’t work out how we failed to negate him.

Sam Morsy in his Chesterfield days and Aaron Mooy for Huddersfield.
Oxlade Chamberlain was absolutely sensational in the Arsenal away game as well. Shame he's been riddled with injuries and his bizarre move away from Arsenal just as he'd become a regular.

I totally remember that he was incredible that game, imagine Austin Berkley on steroids and then double it! I remember him getting alot of stick too for being Spanish although he was actually Portuguese) was quite a novelty back then. Most insults revolved around totally forgotten failed sitcom Eldorado believe it or not.

Also would it be valid to say Shaun Whalley for Luton against us?!!
I couldn't believe that he came on as a sub since he seemed on another level to everyone else on the pitch. Was very excited when he joined us.

Tony Kelly's performance for Colchester at the old meadow in the cup, January 1989.
Wayne Clarke (Walsall) a masterclass upfront as they us apart, 1993/93 season.
Both 3-0 losses.

Connor Wickham. I remember him running experienced defenders ragged as 16 year old for Ipswich against town in some cup. Scored 2 that day and then again in the shoot out.
Thought he was going to be a superstar, but he has never really made it. A bad move to the prem, and lots of injuries meant he has never really established himself at any club he's been at.
Just seen he is clubless again, at only 30

Santos who plays for Bolton always seems a class above whenever we play them. He is annoyingly good.

I go back a long way. The most skillful player I ever saw, at any level, was Ken Wagstaffe of Mansfield,he regularly made our defence foolish. One of the most effective performances against us was Nigel Jenson, then of Rotherham at Wembley.

the guy who scored Stevenages goal a couple of months back was clearly a class above league 1, a massive goal as far as Taylor was concerned too

Tommy Wright (Oldham). Went to watch town away at Boundary Park one Friday evening and we were well beaten, Tommy Wright ran rings around us.

Lyle Taylor stood out for me when playing for Wimbledon at NM about 10 years ago. He was on his own upfront, but still managed to run our defence ragged. Always wished we could sign him since then. Another one, which people will laugh at, is Adam El Abd, who played for Swindon against us at NM, I think on loan from Bristol City at the time. I just remember him marshalling their defence and not giving our forwards a sniff. Sadly, wasn’t as good when we signed him.

Trevor Brooking. He beat us on his own early 80s I think it was That would have been 80/81 when they won the division. 79/80 we did the double over them scoring 3 goals in both the home and away games. They only ended up 7th and that double defeat put a huge dent in their promotion challenge.

Trevor Brooking. He beat us on his own early 80s I think it was our first season in division 2. ( championship now ) I remember me and my dad walking down the Kop and my dad saying , look thats Trevor brooking over there, he was walking up the Kop ( ok we were home to West Ham that day ) I guess it was early and we were popping to my nans first, the result we hammered them 3-0, as far as brooking goes I remember 1 moment from that game and it was actually just brooking involved , I think town had a corner, and the ball was missing, either the match ball or a replacement was launched towards the area, and Broking sensed it was coming his way, he kind of ducked, the ball landed on his shoulder and there was a bit of a cheer, he smiled in the way you'd expect the return game was 7 days before West Ham won the fa cup in 1980 v arsenal brooking got the winner , town won 3-1 at upon park, ( 6-1 ) on aggregate for the season the sad thing, where this ranks in town history I dont know, probably quite high, but will it ever get beat, I doubt it anyway, here's the brooking man of the match display you refer to the following year found some info from the 1-3 game too www.flickr.com/photos/42687253@N05/24632684107/in/photostream/Paul Maguire fouled in the box by frank Lampard, penalty Lampard junior would have been 2 years old

One player that always stood out for me when watching town in recent years was a Marvin Morgan for Aldershot. I remember watching him about 2 or 3 times and always thinking how good he looked & hoped one day we might sign him. So as you can imagine I was over the moon the day he signed & the impact he made for the club.
RIP MARV

Oxlade-Chamberlain did win the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool, however, as well as a few other trinkets.

Alan brown for Sunderland, and Stan Cummings..the same game,Easter Monday, early 80s....both terrific that night....brown was like lightning....glad we signed him later on👍👍 I remember that game and you are spot on. I think Sunderland had beaten Wrexham on the Saturday and played us on the Monday . A great game , both sides got a standing ovation at the end. Sunderland won and went on to get promoted but Brown was incredible that night . Although we lost it was one of those games were you just had to say , well played Town, great effort but beaten by a better side on the night . Yes, a very memorable match. If you’ve ever watched “Under the Cosh “ Browns son , also an ex Sunderland player , is one of the presenters.

Not a competitive game as such but Town played Stoke City in a pre season friendly, maybe mid / late 80’s . Terry Conroy played for them and was very impressive scoring against us and generally looking a class above . Good player was Conroy, mind you Stoke City had a very good side at the time.
