A few that others have said that instantly sprung to my mind were Connor Wickham, Ricardo Santos, Jordan Rhodes and Marvin Morgan. Would also add Paul Benson and Clayton Donaldson to that list, seems easier for strikers to catch the eye somehow.

Danny Murphy scored a stunning free kick at the Wakeman End when playing for Crewe Alex. Reminded me of another Crewe player - Nick Powell. Remember one game at Gresty Road where he ran the show as I think a then 17 year old. Much like my post on Connor Wickham, Powell looked destined for the top, and joined United at the end of that season. But he never really played for them and then fell into a series of loans. Despite making a good career, I think much more was expected. He's now with Stockport, only a few points above Crewe, so more or less back where he started

If I remember rightly his career never quite reached the heights many expected

I go back a long way. The most skillful player I ever saw, at any level, was Ken Wagstaffe of Mansfield,he regularly made our defence foolish. One of the most effective performances against us was Nigel Jenson, then of Rotherham at Wembley. I don’t remember Wagstaff with Mansfield but associate him with the very good Hull team of the 1960s which included Ken Houghton and Chris Chilton. These 3 together scored over 500 goals for Hull City. It seemed easier for smaller clubs to retain their best players in those days, I guess the differential in wages between big and small clubs was less and agents didn’t make their money from moving players on regularly. Imagine us being able to keep a player as good as Frank Clarke for 7 years these days.

I remember going to Villa Park and being awed by Roy Aitkens control of the game , despite it seemed him never actually breaking into a run at any stage.
In more recent times, Burton Albion had a winger who literally destroyed us on his own one afternoon at New Meadow, can’t remember his name but I have a feeling he ended up at Sheff Utd.

That would be Mark Duffy? Good shout. There was a chap on here who waxed lyrical about him when he played in the non leagues up Liverpool ish way, think he suggested him to the club but got no reply
