Just one thing to add. I agree the handling of this issue is awful but the principle is good. So many people are purely takers. Genuinely not sure what you mean here. Somebody further up the thread mentioned the weekly parkruns - these are free to enter and depend entirely on volunteers in order to go ahead this week. I participate as a runner most weeks but make sure I volunteer as a helper at least every other month to put something back in. Some people never do this and just run every week for free without ever volunteering. These people could perhaps justifiably be described as takers. I'm not convinced the same can be applied to football supporters. If you're spending hundreds of pounds a year (into the thousands possibly if you go away too) on the club, to be described as a taker because you aren't willing to give up some additional time for free doesn't seem justified to me.

I'd be more inclined to volunteer for the club should their be some sort of ownership scheme in place for supporters with a yearly subscription and % off general ticket prices / merch.
Really dont like the interchanging between commercial business one week and inclusive club the next.
I'm genuinely baffled as to whether we are in deep financial doom or not. One week we are told about Roland and Duncan personally dipping in. Next we are told everything is aligned and the budget is good.

All good points Peter. I just interpret them differently and that's my choice it doesn't make me or you right or wrong

All good points Peter. I just interpret them differently and that's my choice it doesn't make me or you right or wrong I quite agree. I was just hoping to get a better understanding of why you see it that really. I should clarify I have no real problem with the club asking this, even if I do feel the statement isn't worded particularly well. Anyone who chooses to take the club on the offer should be free to do so without ridicule or being lumped in as club apologists or whatever. But equally anybody who chooses not to should be free to make that choice without being judged or condemned.

I'm genuinely baffled as to whether we are in deep financial doom or not. One week we are told about Roland and Duncan personally dipping in. Next we are told everything is aligned and the budget is good. Exactly my point. I know the club are in a difficult position, they can't reveal the full financial information until the accounts are published and of course won't want to publish intimate details of the ongoings of last season but things don't stack up. As Shelton has alluded to, if we can't afford to pay the cleaning staff then that really is worrying. But as our chairman signed off his message last year "Please do not be concerned about our club’s future, it is safe and secure"

Cost cutting doesn't mean "can't afford". It's simply making a choice to reduce some costs when funds are tight, which is probably what we've all done at some time.
As peterjones1 said it's an individual choice. I appreciate some might be coloured by past experience but I don't see any harm in the request. It's not going to make a big financial difference to the club but it might give those who volunteer a bit more sense of inclusion - and with a new CEO and a new owner almost certainly on the horizon, that's surely a good thing.

Jamo if you consider 15 hour days holidays I will give you that. By the way a crossing to the island is £488. That's one bike with pillion. Our accommodation in excess of a grand . Tent pitches from £15 per night with no facilities. This volunteering is fun and that's why we do it I was not intending to diminish in any way your love of and commitment to, the TT scene, I was merely attempting ( clumsily it would seem) to say that the comparison with the club asking for a volunteer army is wide of the mark.

Two thoughts. Firstly, it's a good idea for those who live locally, love the club, want to give back etc. Secondly, christ we must be in a lot worse trouble than I'd have ever thought if we're pleading with fans to litter pick because we can't afford to pay the cleaning staff. During the world cup we saw certain countries Clearing up after themselves after a game , Japan were one I'll be first to admit I leave my cup behind if I've had a coffee but I'll also love to be part of a few hundred fans spending just 2 minutes doing exactly what Japan did , trouble is no way would I become one of a small handful doing it so can't see something like that happening I doubt even Wimbledon do it 🙃

I do get it, I do. I’m just not sure we should be asking fans for free labour whilst paying 20+ players an average of £2-3k per week. Only in football would someone pay £350+ for a season ticket and then also give them their skills for free. Good idea and I’m sure worthwhile but could just never be me, that’s all. Not unless the club was on the verge of extinction. I think it's because some fans actually love the club and will happily donate their time or money to them, it's not compulsory I’m really hoping this wasn’t intended as a s**tty dig for daring to join the debate at a different angle. I do pretty much do 46/46 year after year & live and breathe this football club. I just don’t think we are at the stage of being a charity. It’s like the ticket prices, fans will do so much more for this ‘business’ than they would any other and I think it’s cheeky to get free labour from people for a saving that will be absolutely miniscule. If the time ever comes when Roland (or new owners) have genuinely taken us into the abyss, I’ll be leading the way with so much of my own time to get it sorted. Excuse the rant if your comment was entirely innocent.

Would love to do anything that I can for Town. Amazed to hear so many of us are so against it.
Obviously if you are not able or live too far, fair enough. But any argument on finances is conjecture and guesswork. So forget about 'are we in dire straights financially, or are we not?'.
Those that have volunteered before and been turned down. We all applaud you. But they club didn't need you then, they do now. It's like volunteering for the army in 1913 and being refused entry, to then refuse to be called up in 1914 🤷♂️
So throw any grudges you have in the sillybin. The club is bigger than anyone in it including RW. The fans are the club. we are the club. Where's all your 'blind loyalty' gone folks. We need it back 🤣

So I volunteered to help after the Orient match. A handful of us met unaware of what task we would be doing. A steward, employed by the club, us into the ground and gave us all binbags and gloves. We were to litter pick the stands. Initially it was meant to be just the east stand so the ladies could play their match on Sunday. But we managed to do everywhere in a few hours which was great.
What wasn't great was the amount of rubbish! West stand wasn't too bad, south stand was bad, family stand was terrible. I didn't see the away end but I expect with the small crowd it wasn't too bad.
You can tell it was mainly the kids that were littering; drinks bottles, sweets and wrappers. I asked the steward why he thinks there is so much litter, he says lack of bins. Maybe we need to run a fun awareness campaign next season for the kids 🤷♂️
On a side note...the steward had been working there for 15 years. He used to be a season ticket holder but doesn't bother for whatever reason. Shocked after all that time the club hasn't given him a free one IMO.

Well done Belfast was any mention made for next season or was it just a one off due to the women’s game. I ask as I volunteered but haven’t heard. Maybe because I said not match day as I take my grand kids. Just wondering if the plan is to get the stands cleared after games by fans to save money. Great idea but is it sustainable?
I’ve got to ask why would the Steward need a season ticket? He’s there already, have I missed something?

I am of the impression there is a decent amount of volunteer work expected in the close season, painting etc. Some of the volunteer days were for the Monday after the game. So basically the rubbish stays in the ground all weekend. Can you believe that! That shouldn't be the case at a L1 club. But ultimately we shouldn't be picking anything up at all. We should provide more bins. Or maybe we could wheel some out at the end of matches or something. I picked up a lot of ripped up golden gambles 🙄

That should certainly be fedback to the club. I was thinking of pinging Liam Dooley an email. I'm not interested in telling people off for littering though, we should be looking for a solution.
