Dane Scarlett recalled from his loan at Ipswich by Tottenham after not starting any games. MT will have coached him at spurs and I’m sure I read a rumour we were interested in him last summer, but at the time spurs wanted a champ move, which many suggested is above his ability right now I'd imagine he's far too classy for our level, besides; why would anyone send a striker here to develop? Our XG and chances created are appalling.

A real shame for Thorpe but good news for us, and won’t be missed. It’s one frustration of mine, from both the media and Taylor’s side, that we never actually get told what’s actually up with players and when they might be back. It’s like they get injured and disappear from human consciousness.

[br Youd hope so. Especially with Winchester moving centrally recently. But with Finnigan, Fleming and Phillips still here there might not be loads of budget left for incomings unless they also depart. They will all be on more money than Thorpe i'd imagine

They will all be on more money than Thorpe i'd imagine I think Phillips is done with us and I wouldn't want to risk having him as a fourth striker, given how poorly the others are doing. We should never have taken him on in the first place and we should not be a convalescent home for crocked or half-fit players. I don't think we can afford to wait for Finnigan to regain fitness either as midfield is a crucial area, which needs addressing as soon as possible. As for Fleming, we were promised that he would be available before Christmas and that hasn't happened, so not sure how far off a full recovery he is. I thought he looked good when he played, but if he is injury-prone or carrying a long-term injury which he can't shake, again we can't afford to hang around.

Might have been short-lived but at least we knew how players were progressing with injury.

Depends if we can cancel loans and if we do if there is cost implications. I'd hope for not, but they were all signed on season loans. The thing that is a bit worrying too is that the main team players remain pretty much the ones from pre Moore/Taylor. Marosi, Dunkley, Udoh, Bayliss and Shipley remain the key players but none of them have been signed by the current regime. Flanagan too when he's played. Even Winchester and Bennett who have often played may have been signed by these guys but don't feel like it. How many of the Taylor/Moore signings have done well? Sraha did impress briefly. Kenneh and Perry probably the best ones but ones only on loan. Who else? Anderson been ok in spells, same for Feeney. That's about it!

Elliot Thorpe has just tweeted his goodbyes as he returns to Luton.
Hopefully they are working on 2 or 3 more.

Is your Irish scouting network working for you?
We have been linked with Afolabi, one of the top scorers in the Irish league, however I see your NZ lad was still in the top 5 after joining you in August so doesn't say much!
Has he struggled or just no game time?

Has he struggled or just no game time? We've signed 2 with another coming in January. The one has barely played and the other (Mata) has has had plenty of gametime but doesn't look good enough, in his defence most strikers would look poor in our set up.

Mata was matchfit when he joined as he had played half a season already in the irish league. But had to wait about a month or so for international clearance. It was always going to be a huge step for him.
What I would say about Mata is...he's not a million miles away. And remember when Udoh came from Telford he was much the same. Now look at him 💪

He has 1 goal…in how many appearances now? I like Mata, he works hard and wins headers, but he isn’t the answer to getting us out of trouble.

It’s only L1, for god’s sake, not bl**dy MI5. I can’t imagine our opponents poring over the pre-match interviews in order to gain some theoretical advantage based on the make up of our starting eleven, especially not this season. I actually think Taylor is slightly better in this respect but would love to see the return of Skitty’s updates.

Sorry for long post...
We clearly need strengthing in January to get some attacking intent into the team. Obviously this will be contingent on 2 things, 4 of the loan players either becoming fit or returned (excluding Kennah and Anderson), and the budget. Assuming the loanees aren't going to play, for me we need 2 wing backs, 2 Central midfielders and 1 striker as a minimum.
On the loanees, according to the stats on the website, Thorpe (now gone), Finnigan, Phillips and Fleming have played a total of 753 minutes in the league, out of a possible total of 7,290 minutes. Most clubs at our level rely on loanees, and to have so few minutes played by these 4 is a big loss and waste of resources. Given we knew at least Phillips and Fleming were returning from injury, hopefully there were clauses in the deals to be able to return them, or we are contributing only a small percentage of their wages.
The above eats into our budget, which we're told is the same as last year. Ignoring any inflation arguments, its quite possible that it's the same, as the budget is set at the start if the year. This isn't the same as the actual spend. Both years we could have had a budget set of say £4m for playing staff (figure illustrative only), but last year the actual wage bill may have been say £4.25m, accounting for some of the alleged overspend. Some of those contracts are still going to be on the current wage bill.
I'm sure I saw Taylor say the other day that he expected both incomings and outgoings in January. Other than the loanees returning, do we have many saleable assets? Flanagan and Bayliss may have been 2 as likely higher earners, but injuries will reduce interest. I think Bowman may go, which would then require another replacement. I can't see Udoh being for sale as he's too important unless a silly offer comes in.
Is it beyond the realms of possibility that Dunkley may be sold? It would be highly controverisal amongst the fan base. I'm making an assumption that he's likely to be one of the higher earners. He's by far our best defender, but I think if we reverted to a back 4 it would expose his lack of pace, which may be a reason we haven't switched to this. His best position is in the centre of 3 central defenders, but Pierre has taken that position recently with Dunkley being right footed for balance. He was very slow in coming out to cover for the 2nd Portsmouth goal. If Sraha is fit, it's a position that we have cover. For clarity, I'm not advocating this, just a potential theory!
Either way, I think we could be in for a busier January than usual.

Dunkley, Flanagan, Bayliss and Bowman...contract all up in 6 months so we will barely get a penny if we sell next month I'm afraid. Same with Marosi. We could make some money on Shipley perhaps. But I would only want players sold if its going to be reinvested straight away into new players.

In his post match interview, Taylor was talking about the need for reinforcements in January. A manager talking about the need to bring in players in January, we've heard that before........
He's being clever here, with recruitment out of his hands, he's very much putting Moore (and Roland) under pressure to deliver the players, if it doesn't happen then some of the fans frustration will be moved towards them two. That media training has come in very handy here.
Although if he thinks its just about bringing in strikers, then I'm not convinced January will see the big change many of us want
