Letting Pennington leave this club would be a travesty of the highest order! We should be looking long term and getting our best players signed up early.

Inspiring stuff. No doubt I'll continue to tune in but I'm struggling to recall a time when I have felt this much apathy towards the Town. Maybe it comes with age and no doubt four losses on the bounce don't help but...

Realistically he won’t sign a new contract here, I don’t usually support us selling our best players but would be a wise move to cash in and get a fee for him whilst we can instead of losing him for nothing in 6 months, whilst it looks like a mid table finish with nothing to play for.

Been happening since the 70s I'm afraid---- sold our best players then--- still doing it now---- that's how we survived, unfortunately we need to stay afloat, and atm, we're in financially bad shape👍👍

Any ideas who's actually interested in Pennington an what sort of fee would we be looking at.Literally fed up of losing our best players year in year out and the squad constantly having to be overhauled.Would love Wycherley to officially put the club up for sale an see what kind of interest we'd get.

Thinking again about the likelihood of any more activity in January, here is a possibility: Winchester and/or Moore to be signed on permanent contracts (18 months or two and a half years). Both are out of contract in the summer and any fee involved wouldn’t necessarily break the bank if it suited their patent clubs to offload them. Also, we must already be paying some or all of their wages so we would not be adding greatly to our wage bill.
Not only would this free up two loans but Moore would be an obvious replacement for Pennington if he goes. I know many have not been impressed with him in the positions Cotterill has asked him to play, but right sided centre back is his natural role.

If this is the case rearly got to feel for Cotterell, probably feels like he's banging his head against a brick wall.Hes trying to put something together on the bare minimum as it is without being dismantled.

I don't buy that. He was given a budget and he's chosen how to spend it, yes he's been unlucky with injuries but let's not pretend that it's a shoe-string budget and he's in a desperate situation. For example we struggle to score goals and everyone wants a new striker but we have 6 strikers in the squad (O'Brien, Saydee, Street, Bowman, Bloxham, Pyke), the first 4 are his signings and Bloxham is someone he has talked up, it's only Pyke that is a legacy from a previous manager.

Probably our most underwhelming January window of all time?
I'm amazed that Street and Da Costa haven't been sent back.
I know we've seen flashes of Da Costa that suggest he could be a great asset but with our injury record this season and the fact RWB is one of the few positions where we actually have cover, could those funds not to be released to bring in a more attacking player?
It sounds like Street was pivotal in bringing Phillips in so I suppose it would be harsh in the extreme to cut ties with him now.

A loan deal can be cancelled at any time in the season if both clubs concerned agree."Leshabela and you're beloved Sam Cosgrove are both evidence of this last season. I'd have imagined in the latter's case we were paying a large chunk of his wages so it may have been more complicated but thankfully Wimbledon came along and him off our hands. The year before Shilow Tracey and Jan Zamburek both returned to their clubs in January despite signing on season-long loans. www.lcfc.com/news/2223760/youngster-leshabela-in-shrewsbury-loanwww.shrewsburytown.com/news/2020/september/shilow-tracey-joins-salop/www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/shrewsbury-town-fc/2020/10/05/shrewsbury-town-seal-loan-of-brentford-midfielder-jan-zamburek/

Its driven the parent club though. Street maybe could go back as Palace will be more interested in his development if the loaning club didn't want him. but the fact he clearly likes it here and started most games recently may suggest you view him a little differently than the management do. DaCosta is probably different. Do Coventry want him back? I'd suggest they only would if they had another taker for his wages. He isn't going into their squad and he's out of contract at the end of the season. He's a near certainty to be released. If they've loaned him out for the season why go through the bother to have him back if they don't need to?

We play the loan market, quite generously at times so we have to take the rough with the smooth.
If we had a stronger academy/reserve team pathway to the first team then perhaps we wouldn't be so reliant on the loan market, especially on youngsters on loan who have had little to no league 1 experience.

agreements of course but they will cost us money we don't have speculation but i guess we spent most of last january trying to get another club to take our best striker off our hands and offer to pay someone to do it 🤪 like i said , phone up and try cancelling your mobile contact , you can't as you have signed a contract , except you can but it will cost you money

I wasn't sure what the situation was with Da Costa but like Cosgrove last season, I imagine it's a case that Coventry are just happy to relieve some of the wage burden until they inevitably release him at the end of his contact. So I'd agree with you, terminating his loan is probably not on the table. Street you'd think is slightly different. Palace might see him as one for the future and if he's getting regular minutes in and enjoying his time with us then they'd see no reason to end the loan unless maybe a Championship side showed some interest - unlikely I'd say. Plus we're probably not paying his wages or making a small contribution. On reflection it does make perfect sense why we've kept the pair of them, thanks for clarifying.

Probably our most underwhelming January window of all time? I suppose what doesn't help is we have hit it as we are going through a terrible time on the field and naturally people think we need new recruits. Add in the fact we see other clubs recruiting then it's understandable that people are disappointed by the lack of movement. With Bennett & O'Brien back, DaCosta getting closer and Phillips coming in, our squad does look stronger than a month ago but we haven't got time for them to ease back in.

Pennington has been our best defender and forward all season so a massive loss if he does go. A swap for Wrexhams Paul Mullin would be acceptable but it would take the rest of the season for Mullin to get up to speed with proper football so I would want a fee for Pennington as part of the deal. Mullin could be used off the bench with a view to him playing second fiddle next season alongside the mighty Udoh.

We already have them for the season and struggle to see how either would get a better offer than us at the end of the season and if they did they would not be hard to replace. Paying money for them would be waste of our limited resourced imo. Moore is also not in the same league as Pennington so he is hardly a replacement.

Selling a player this season increases his budget next season. The job of a manager at this level is to buy cheap and sell high to help progress the club.

I'm always interested in seeing how ex Town players are getting on.
Lee Angol moved the other day from Bradford to Sutton.
Brad Walker has also joined Tranmere Rovers on a 2.5 year deal from Port Vale.
