It’s amazing what difference a few weeks have made….on the face of things we have recruited exceptionally well and may well be more to come.
I find myself looking forward to this season with more optimism than I have had for many a year.
I suppose all my optimism is based on players that are “good on paper”, and as we know matches are not won as easy as that!!
Do others share my optimism, and what was the last season you felt we could possibly be on the verge of a great season

I’m feeling very positive about the upcoming season, things are in a much better place than 11 months ago, we just need a couple more signings and the new kit to be announced now.
Can’t blame anybody for thinking we should finish in the top half, that may be the expectation if we make a couple more signings of decent quality.

Think we are seeing the difference a fully fit SC makes as well.
Given his battles with Covid last year can't have been easy for him to fully focus on the Summer preparation.

Think we are seeing the difference a fully fit SC makes as well. Given his battles with Covid last year can't have been easy for him to fully focus on the Summer preparation. You can tell the difference in the photo of him today on the social media feeds compared to last Summer. He'd said himself he'd placed weight on, definitely in a better place personally. Which is only a good thing for the whole club.

Roland is said to be in every day too, so he must be in a good place and enjoying things.

We definitely seem to have strengthened already but remember this league is packed with teams with much bigger budgets who can bring quality off the bench (think its five subs as well next season). For me a realistic league target would be 12th place or around 60 points and at least 60 goals.

I share your optimism!! Bring on the season! But i am always optimistic pre-season anyway. Top half is progress. Playoffs would be target. Promotion would be unrealistic. If we sign a few more biggies, get off to a flying start, and get lucky with injuries....then we will be right up there!

I’m slightly more optimistic that we’ll finish above 18th but also a realist and think anything around 10-12th will be a good season.

Much more confident about this season. But it wasnt easy to be confident about last season with all the lack of action going on re recruitment.

Yeah, I think we have a good chance of reclaiming 17th next season

So many good teams in League 1. I do think we’ll have a real team spirit and the players will give their all every game which will do for me.

Was anybody optimistic in the hurst season, before we started the league games.i was, I went to a couple of the pre- season games, and you could tell straight away, they were a fit and well organised side then.so I'll need to watch a few this season, to give my judgement on these players/team

I am optimistic at the start of every season, but that's part of supporting your local team, and if you can't be optimistic what is the point.

Amazing how things can turn around in a week.
I have a feeling this is the "going for it" season that comes around every few years.
Buckle up, enjoy the ride.

I expect us with the squad that shaping up to compete but I don't expect us to trouble the top 6. I think our achilles heel again will be scoring goals......all top teams have decent GF column for a reason. Its all well being solid and hard to beat if your not sticking it in the onion bag yourself enough to win games, as per last season

Little tweaks, but I think it'll make a difference.

How many more would Udoh have got with better service last season? Bowman too? Shipley, Bayliss, O'brien, even Dacosta as a more attack minded wingback, these could be the keys to unlocking our goalscoring potential.

There is undoubted quality in the new signings but the squad is still too small to cover for injuries, suspensions, form slumps or fatigue. I think we also lack "game-changers" on the bench, as we did last season. I know there are budgetary constraints but if we can add four more of a decent standard then I'll start to get excited.

The last time I felt optimistic was the season after the Hurst season where we had a busy transfer window and spent big on Ollie Norburn, how foolish I was!
Really like our signings so far though and I'm fully expecting us to have one of our best league one seasons.

I'm cautiously optimistic......sounding very politician like there I know. I've mentioned on a few threads that I don't know a lot about the players coming in but the reason I'm optimistic is fans of former clubs and other lower league fans are saying what am impressive squad we are putting together. Additionally, we have signed players with a decent pedigree but they aren't old men past their best.
The key thing for me is the start, generally our starts to the season in L1 have been pathetic, apart from that one season under Hurst. Lets hope we don't take a few months for team to gel/get fitness

Lets hope we don't take a few months for team to gel/get fitness It's all 'ifs buts and maybes' at this stage but the well-documented tricky April schedule means the early season games - on paper at least - look favourable. The Plymouth/Pompey away double header at the end of October feels like a pain in the backside, Pompey will probably be up there and we haven't won at Home Park in over 20 years. It would just be nice to get to get into autumn where it historically tends to go south looking up rather than down.

I get its not all about goals, look at Stockton at Morecambe last season, scored loads but Morecambe were like a leaky tap at the back. Yes, if we spread the goals out we have a chance but I still believe we need a forward to bag 25+ if we are serious about the P word.
