yep finally got it over the line, culmination of 5 years of hard work but little old Shrewsbury led the way Yes, and what really p**ses me off is that we are rarely mentioned when the issue of safe standing comes up. Sorry, but it does annoy me . Maybe we should have a f.ckin great flag in the South Stand highlighting the fact , or even a massive flag flying from the main building saying something like “ Safe Standing - where Shrewsbury Town F C lead , others follow “. Aarh , I’m going over the top now I know but I do get really wound up when we are ignored . Apologies, rant over 😔

I think it should be a gradual crep down, row by row per season.

I was a supporter of safe standing, but I can't see the need to expand safe standing further down the south stand. We can't fill the Juan's we've got now. Also, you would uproot 100's of season ticket holders. There were quite a few miffed to install safe standing in the fust place. They had to move lower down. I'll bet they'd be pleased as punch to be moved again. I guess for the majority of fans if you offer them a seat or standing room for the same price they will take the seat. More so those of a certain age. I wonder if the club were able to offer cheaper tickets to stand if the whole South Stand was standing and whether that would see more doing so...👍 Be interesting to see how clubs in the top two divisions will handle this now that they have been given the OK to introduce standing, whether they will offer cheaper tickets (and just how much cheaper).

Demand for standing will be huge in the top flight though, you'd think? Could be a weird scenario where you actually pay a premium to stand which will kind of defeat the object a bit I think. Love the idea of a full standing South stand offering reduced price tickets at town though. Could put another 500 - 1k on the gate that way I reckon.

Seems to remember it’s a stipulation in the Prem / Championship that fans have to have the choice to sit or stand in Safe standing? In other words the seats have to be in the unlocked position. Will ours change

Will ours change Surely that's a misunderstanding? Or at the very least it's just suggesting people can sit if they get tired or something? Isn't avoiding mixed standing/seated areas the whole point of this exercise? Can definitely see the argument for unlocking the seats in the event that, say, an older person or someone with kids there just needs a seat for ten mins but utterly pointless to say to people they can sit for 90 mins in there and still see the game.

I guess it might differ from club to club, whether introducing safe standing adds capacity and/or whether it will be cheaper to attend. If its simply replacing seating with standing for the same price one or two might get some pushback. Not sure how many it might add at the Meadow (who knows, if at all) but would certainly want to see the club give it a go. I would never wish to detract from the huge amount of work and effort in getting standing back at Shrewsbury, its an incredible achievement that the club and fans can take pride in. However, for me its still not fulfilling its entire purpose in that its not being used to provide cheaper tickets for fans to attend. Whilst I was happy to hear that the club were going to introduce standing I was disappointed and couldn't quite understand why they would charge the same to stand as to sit. Makes no sense to me at all. Never will do either.

Being very old, I remember when Paul MacGuire used to take corners to the near post to be flicked on for an inrushing Jake King to score. For a short time is was called "The Shrewsbury corner", but we couldn't have that could we. It became "The short corner".

The key issues for me are; - mixed seating/standing in the south stand meaning overall it's not quite seen as "an end" yet - continued allowance of the standing area in the west stand Agree, you could also add ticket prices to that list. I think if the club clamped down hard on standing in seated areas (and I say this as someone with a season ticket in blocks 18 or 19 all the time the ground has existed up until this coming season where I'm in block 9), expanded the availability of safe standing and reduced prices in that area you might really see it snowball. Something of a gamble though and I can see the argument thar if it doesn't sell out now, why would it in a bigger space? Someone made a good point earlier in the thread though about how people only really want to be in blocks 9 and 10 - removing the seating might change that?

How much of the South Stand safe standing was financed by the club or was it predominantly donations? I guess for the clubs that are financing a safe standing themselves, I can't see that they would do so wilfully and then acknowledge that they'll have to reduce ticket prices. Seems a bit counter-intuitive on their part. I'd love to see the day of a capacity South Stand on its feet but think it might be a long way into the future. Until we're selling out what we've got already I can't see much of a need for it.

Someone made a good point earlier in the thread though about how people only really want to be in blocks 9 and 10 - removing the seating might change that? Get where you’re coming from, but I’d hate to see blocks 18 and 19 being forced to sit. A vocal group of supporters stood next to the away end is a legacy of the Riverside at GM, and certainly shouldn’t be discouraged. As you say, the argument against making the entire South Stand safe standing is “only blocks 9 and 10 sell out, where is the demand?”. But as I’ve pointed out before, this is because you don’t get the safe standing experience in the other blocks - they’re either corner blocks or are about three rows deep. You get the full experience in blocks 9 and 10, hence the demand. If the entire South Stand is made safe standing, then the entire South Stand will provide the full experience, therefore resulting in greater demand. Would be great to see the club take the initiative on this and look into it. The initial introduction of safe standing was a great achievement, and a proud time for us all.

Don't get me wrong, its conjecture this. This could well be one of those things that looks good on paper, looks to make sense to a supporter but in reality, could fall flat on its face. We always have to take into account who we are, the size of the support and the potential numbers we could pull in. It could well be that we pretty much have everyone who is going to attend attending anyhow and this would make no difference to attendances. But it might. And as mentioned above (which is another good point and something I agree with) it's neither here nor there, its a halfway house, its not an 'end'. Something that I don't think we have ever had (no disrespect to those on the Riverside and their efforts down the years) and something that I was really hoping we would get when we moved to the new stadium. I mean I talk about charging the same for standing and sitting, I didn't understand why we didn't make it cheaper behind the goal when we first moved to try and get that 'end' established in the first place. I wonder if those in the block next to the away fans who make a noise would have been tempted into the South Stand from the off for example if it had been cheaper. Great that we have a new stadium, great that we have standing available...just think that we didn't make the most of either. From the point of view of getting a decent atmosphere going I mean (which I think was lacking at the old ground, thought we had a chance to address that at the new one...I don't think we did). Just to add here I supported Town after we had the Station End. So I shouldn't have said 'never' had. Just since I have been supporting Town.

From the government site hence my question to suttonshrew who knows a lot about Safe Standing…. www.gov.uk/government/news/safe-standing-at-football-stadiums-to-be-rolled-out-next-season“ Seats cannot be locked in the up or down position, so fans can can sit if they wish to, and the standing areas cannot affect the views of other fans. Other parts of the grounds remain all-seated and fans are expected to sit in these areas.”

Was it cheaper at the GM to sit in the family stand than it was to stand in the Wakeman? Genuine question by the way. On the very rare occasion I was in the family stand I was usually on a school trip. Though speaking of schools, one thing that has been both a blessing and a curse (depending on your perspective) is the way the South Stand was infiltrated with school football teams for the second half of last season. I could be wrong but I think the club has used this as a tool to improve the atmosphere. I agree with you though - there's a lot of potential and certainly enough appetite to change things for the better. But it's very been slow progress. We're 15 years down the line and the "new" ground still doesn't quite feel like home but a million percent better than what it was a few years back.

Great that the club are looking to get people into that end of the ground. Good to hear. Hopefully that does add to the noise and atmosphere. Not sure about the family stand at the old ground but even so, that's a specific area of the ground for a specific purpose. Not sure it makes sense to compare that area of the ground to others. Agree that things have improved but like you say, its been 15 years now and I still don't think we made the most of it. From day one, when they didn't offer cheaper tickets behind the goal, I thought the chance might well be gone. That we have two areas of the ground looking to make a noise sums it up for me (considering the size of our fan base, that just doesn't make sense to me).

It was a great achievement to get safe standing over the line but I believe we had to compromise to keep other fans happy and maintain visibility for all….
As has been said the atmosphere in 9/10 is better than in 8 11 and 12 with 11/12 limited to a couple of rows due to the disabled area. Also the drum ideally needs to be central so the atmosphere will spread both ways but again would affect the disabled gantry…
What we’ve got is a great start but can be improved. In a perfect world the whole SS need to be converted
Spurs have converted 16% of their ground to safe standing we’ve converted 5% which in time will leave us with one of the smallest areas… the whole SS would equate to around the same percentage…. (worth noting Prem clubs that already sell out are converting for the benefit of the fans alone not more profit)
Needs to be built on but not sure how.

I'd convert the whole south stand to a terrace.
Compensate the season tickets holders in there with a free pie, but only for:
- Fully able - Those aged 45-49

Although I see the logic in this, I always took the view that all-seater stadiums were just so wrong for football, that I would have paid extra to stand.

Seems bizarre to me that seats should be unlocked though. Either choose to stand or to sit it’s easy. How long before people who sit complain because the people in front of them are standing and they can’t see?!

Celtic have had it for quite a while now Yes, I am aware of that. Our club was the first in the football league to install safe standing. That’s why I get annoyed when discussing “ safe standing “ our club is rarely if ever mentioned. Certain individuals representing our club worked very hard indeed to get safe standing installed and from a few meetings I attended it became very clear that it was a battle at times to get this over the line. Why I get p**sed off is because their hard work tends to be ignored . Because of this I will continue to flag up , as opportunities arise , the fact that Shrewsbury Town F C were the first club to install safe standing in the football league . I am proud of that, for our club , our supporters and mainly for that small group who persevered in seeing their efforts come to fruition.
