According to the Shropshire Star there are just a handful of season tickets remaining in block 9 of the South stand. Is there a case now for making the whole stand safe standing ? The atmosphere has been fantastic but making the whole stand safe standing it could be even better.

Block 19, and maybe the back 1/3 of 18, would make more sense to me to be SS.

It would be incredible if the whole stand became SS. It does seem like the logical next step now IMO.
The argument that this shouldn’t happen because there are some season ticket holders who sit in the South Stand simply doesn’t hold any weight for me.

The argument that this shouldn’t happen because there are some season ticket holders who sit in the South Stand simply doesn’t hold any weight for me. I would like to see this, think it would be incredible on big crowd days to have a whole standing end (I've moved my season ticket from the west stand also as the zeitgeist appears to be heading south). Guess it does come down to demand though. Does the demand for standing currently justify it? One thing I've wondered would be if the club did make it full standing but then clamped down hard on standing in other areas of the ground? There's at least two blocks in the west stand where 2/3 of the seats are occupied by people standing every home game. Does seem like a no brained to try to merge the two and would bring the two louder groups if fans together at one end. I also wonder if there's something in rail seats themselves; if the whole end had rail seats, could you expand or contract the level of standing rows as required? Must admit it's always baffled me why you'd choose to sit behind the goal. I get the concept of wanting to be behind there for the noisy fans but if you prefer to sit through the game the view is far, far better from the west and east stands (that's one of the best things about our ground, the view of the game from the side stands is fantastic).

It would be interesting to know the percentage of fans that are physically unable to stand for the whole of a match.

What would be the cost though and would it be worth it? ie would the demand be there?

An all-standing South Stand would be immense and should be the long-term aim. There's never going to be massive demand to stand in the far corners, eg. block 12, so the fact those areas don't sell out shouldn't be used as a reason not to expand safe standing. It's always going to be far easier to get an atmosphere going with more people stood in whole blocks than it is across a thin slither at the back of the stand. Having all-standing ends behind the goal is going to become the norm again soon, let's not get left behind.

10 years ago if it was up to me there would be a terrace at the meadow now it would be in the south stand i'd still have seats at the front but halfway up block 8/9 right to the back ? i'll have a terrace the family stand would be moved to 19 too ( i'd actually mirror image all those anyway and have away fans in the south stand and home fans in the north) happy home fans less potential trouble far too sensible i say

and 12 years ago , complete with a little pop at 19 ;-) this certainly wouldnt work in block 19 you dont have to be an idiot to sit/stand in block 19 but if you are thats where you go ( i think its compulsory) i dont sit with them and i dont really want to be standing with them, it really is embarrassing when some run to the front when an away fan so much as farts i think a standing area in 19 would only make matters worse in theory i think it would be good in one end of the south stand it may even attract some of those from 19 who get drawn into trouble *apologies to the decent fans who use 19 i know there are quite a few it would be nice to know what stfc's opinion was on this matter i mean if they came forward and said if its ok we'd immediately convert block 8, 19 ,13 etc at least i'd know wether to back or oppose the proposal

On paper it sounds great and having one area allocated completely to standing would be awesome. I can’t see it happening though for reasons some have already mentioned.

If I was at a match I would only be able to stand for a limited time. I do not regard myself as disabled and I have certainly never been drunk at a match. The point is there are probably plenty of fans that would find it uncomfortable to stand for a whole game but wouldn't be regarded as disabled. It would just be interesting to know what proportion of fans fit into that category. It may be that there are not that many and that safe standing could cover a much larger area. This obviously something the club would have to consider in any plans to extend the scheme.

It would just be interesting to know what proportion of fans fit into that category. It may be that there are not that many and that safe standing could cover a much larger area. This obviously something the club would have to consider in any plans to extend the scheme. From memory, the capacity of the South Stand is about 1500 - 1700? Similar for the North Stand, leaving a good 6 or 7k seats in the side stands. I would be extremely surprised if that isn't enough to accommodate everybody that needs (or wants) to sit for a full 90 mins, given our average attendance in total, including away fans, is only a shade over 6k. The side stands also offer a superior view of the match. Personal view is concerns around who can stand up or who has a season ticket in there are a bit of a red herring as I'm fairly sure there'll be a small minority who will vocally complain about having to move and a larger, quieter majority who will understand that the world is changing. For me the bigger question is the simple point of return on investment. I certainly think the club can bump up the numbers if they do simultaneously try to clamp down on standing in other areas of the ground. I also wonder if there'll be a snowball effect whereby people will see it full and loud on big match days and want to join in. Definitely see WATR point that this is likely to be happening at other grounds so would be good to be ahead of the curve again. Ultimately not convinced the club will see it as value for money though. Could be another case of the fans having to step in and contribute?

Just the fact that there’s season ticket holders who currently sit there? They’ll just have to move to the West Stand if they insist on sitting. Just like the ones who were sitting at the top of the South Stand before safe standing was initially put in.

I'd love a full terrace but it won't happen.
I'd imagine it would kill off any chance of filling the corners based on those standing restricting the view?

Am I correct in saying that if we wanted to, we could add an extra tier to the East and/or the West stand? If so, with Meole Brace and Shrewsbury as a whole getting more and more built up which obviously heightens the population of the town, I think the club should start looking into adding safe standing fully behind the South Stand and looking at adding a tier or two onto the side Stand(s).
With the coming season being our 8th season in League 1, making us a well established club at this level, attendances will surely continue to rise as the years go by with the rising population and the sport in general being watched more than ever in person.

Maybe not a full terrace, but what about the central blocks made full standing with seats at either side? That way those seats are probably only really going to be used for crowds near full capacity. As a bonus anyone who cant / doesnt want to stand for the full match for whatever reason could use the seats if they want to at most games. Sure there is a some reason or excuse what it cant happen.

There’s a case for spreading the atmosphere from Block 9 / 10 to 8,11,12,13 which may happen if the flags we donated too to ever turn up.. They were due for the Ipswich game, what happened?

They sorted all the new flags out on Friday. All ready for the new season now I believe. Shipping took longer than planned

We rarely sell what we've got, once or twice a season maximum. I'm not sure if it's changed, much, but we've some 8000 home seats/safe standing. Looking at our average attendance, there is probably at least 2,500 + home seats free at every home game. There's therefore no business justification to increase the ground capacity anytime soon, we would just end up with more empty seats. Let's therefore work with what we've got.

Making the whole stand safe standing makes little sense when it rarely sells out.
With that said block 19 was dire last season. I didn't make it to as many games as usual but there was a lot of faces missing and a lot of new younger faces. Atmosphere was flat and it wouldn't surprise me if at least half of block 19 move over to the safe standing.
