True. I tried to find the article but couldn’t - no surprise there!!! Thanks. As I say it could well have been bad wording somewhere or other. I definitely remember the word chose but of course that may well mean that Whalley got in before I did - if you see what I mean!
It’s a very good example of why the wording and inference of anything going public needs to watched so very carefully.
I’m just glad he stayed as he is such a good bloke who must be a good example in the dressing room. Not to mention his goals of course!

Lets just remember that the players that Mr Cotterill let go have hardly lit up their new teams. Goss has only played 3 games for Motherwell so far, Walker ended up in League 2 with Vale and has only played 6 games, the lad from United is not having a positive impact on Doncasters defence so far and Donald Love has played two games at Salford.
So looks like our leader made the right call in clearing these players out. Was Leahy a better signing than any of these lads above....I would say yes in my opinion. Is Bennett a better buy compared to Love.....yes? even Davis is a better option than Walker.
However I would have kept Goss but accept Cotterills worries that Goss spends too much time on the treatment table and cannot last a 50 game season playing every week

It may well have been the way it was reported. I do remember reading that SC said that Whalley had ‘chosen’ to invoke the clause. To be fair he didn’t say he would have let him go and it may have been bad phrasing by either SC or the journalist, but it did give an odd impression at the time. Something that could be read either way? Here is the article. www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/shrewsbury-town-fc/2021/05/09/shrewsbury-hero-shaun-whalley-set-to-extend-town-stay-into-a-seventh-season/‘And the winger, whose contract expires in June, revealed afterwards that his future has been sorted after early talks with boss Steve Cotterill.’ Would suggest a mutual feeling about it. That post is a lie, there is absolutely no evidence that Cotterill would’ve released him if there wasn’t a clause in his contract. Last thing SC needs is people feeding false truths to try and turn people against him, he’s got a tough enough job on as it is. You missed this bit The important bit The bit that suggests the post and 8 likes were correct The club confirmed Whalley triggered a one-year extension in his deal which ties him down until next summer. It is believe that trigger came after Whalley reached a number of league starts a couple of weeks ago.

As I say it’s all very ambiguous. However, I’d rather have a dozen Shaun Whalleys who want to be here than a load of players just here for the money who don’t give a damn.

He was injured , I think that’s why Pugh was signed It’s what managers do when the squad gets depleted Some of them

The trouble is that he was unable to land the targets he was after in the summer, for whatever reason. So, we have a nucleus of a decent squad but which desperately needs four or five additions that are of unquestionable league one standard. I think if we had managed to get those players in, then the likes of Davis, Udoh, Bennett and Cosgrove would be competing for a place on the bench and not regular starters.

Your 'in other words' appears to be code for, this is what I want it to read rather than what it actually says. The post clearly mentions a nucleus of a decent squad. I didn't think it was necessary to spell out the notion that to have the likes of those I mentioned coming off the bench or covering injuries are reasonable options to have at our level. Pennington is a league one standard player in my opinion.

You liked our previous manager for some reason, you don't like Cotterill for some reason. That's obvious. Hopefully Cotterill can land a few good targets in the winter window and the summer can be put behind us. He was either negligent, unlucky or underfunded, January will point our which it is.

Cosgrove - Send back Pyke - Get rid Hopefully we can sign a young top flight striker on loan along with an experienced marksman to compete with Bowman. Add to that two midfielders and a natural RWB and we won't be a million miles away from winning a few games.

I've never rated EBL, if you go back and check the highlights for the game v rotherham where we got drubbed and watch him during all 4 goals he is way out of his depth I also posted on here that I thought he was mom on saturday, as for the previous manager who was it that started a one man campaign to ask why Arnold kept playing in goal ? last season 9 points from 13 got the manager the sack, there was no , lets see what happens in January and January was only a month away when he went ( I even predicted he would go if he failed to win either the Ipswich or MKD game) we now have 11 points from 14 games and we are saying hang on until January , over 2 months away and no I dont want him sacked, I dont go demanding success, I go to watch a game of football, which is currently s**te, mainly due to an inept manager, and besides, it would take a brave manager to want to take over this mess

It’s still a minority but it’s a growing minority who would like to see Cotterill sacked. So it’s really untruthful to claim everybody who wanted Ricketts out is blindly supporting Cotterill, although there’s at least one person who blindly supported Ricketts and now finds faults with everything Cotterill has ever done.

That's why there's goodwill in the bank and why most will wait to see what happens in January before people seriously start calling for the manager's head.

If we fail in the next transfer window there’s only one person responsible and it’s not Cotterill. The summer transfer window started so well, very early signings of Leahy, Bennett, Pennington, Bowman and Maroši all by mid June. My guess is Roland knew he was selling the club and funds were then plucked away from Cotterill at about this point then thought he better sign some midfielders with the depleted budget, we didn’t sign anybody for a month, then panicked and re-signed Davis probably on a cheaper deal than he was on before, we then signed a very versatile player in Nurse a couple of weeks later then the loan signings of Cosgrove and Leshabala in mid August. At this moment in time we don’t know the truth but that’s my theory but no doubt others will have their own. We will see who is right in January, I will admit it if I got it wrong but in the meantime I will continue to back Cotterill in the transfer market and getting the right results on the pitch, I think he’s doing a good job with the players he’s got. As long as the funds are available from Roland then I think we’ll put it right.

Who went out? Pugh, Cummings, Daniels (against our wishes) and Miller (the only one Id argue with) and some of Ricketts cr@ppy loan players that even he didn’t use.

Most of the work was already done Played 7 W 4 D 3 L 0 Cotterill’s absence obviously hindered us, not helped he got lucky when someone else’s squad were finally all available Oh so our form under Rickettts was just due to injuries and once all these players returned, things would have been fine. Certainly our record under him in 2020 indicates it was just a blip down to injuries, 3 wins in 30 wasn't it? Now before you go to your standard response of 'someone is slagging off Ricketts, I must criticise Cotterill', lets not confuse the two. Me pointing out the failure of Ricketts is not somehow pro Cotterill, most logical football fans are not attached to a manager in the sense they are tribal and defend them at all costs. I wanted Ricketts out, I absolutely think it was the right call, I thought Cotterill was a good appointment, there is still an argument it was the right call as we stayed up but now I'm growing increasingly fed up with him, he's built a weak squad, the style of football is poor, man management questionable and his dealings with the media is embarrassing. Now you will probably call me fickle, I prefer to think of it as acknowledging someones failures, even if I backed them at the outset

Many of us feel it was not before time. Cotterill worked wonders last season but, as you say, this term has been an absolute bin fire. Yes, his tetchy dealings with the media are indeed embarrassing and it's becoming increasingly difficult to back/like the bloke. But you do wonder whether things may have been different had he not been struck down by Covid. That's a much bigger disruption to one's managerial reign than having a few injuries in the squad.

His only good signings were Vela and Pierre. In my opinion Okenabirhie was too but Sam mis managed him. The rest were either poor to bang average, hence why just about all of them were released. Injuries are part of the game, Ricketts had 2 years in charge, and failed spectacularly. I guess this was all down to injuries too right?
