Southgate said he chose the 5 penalty takers based on how they did in training. Well even I know that what happens in training is completely different to the biggest arena they could play in with the largest and most partisan crowd hoping for something after 55 years. There just cannot be that pressure in training, there just can’t. we needed our most experienced, intimidating, players to take those penalties surely? Well let's hope it's a lesson learned!

Some interesting stats about the tournament: www.bbc.com/sport/football/57805875Kalvin Phillips' pressing stats are incredible, and it's notable that Mount and Rice join him in the top five of the tournament. However, the passes in opposition half tell a significant story. Italy have three players in the top ten (Jorginho, Verratti and Insigne) - not just the number of passes but the % success rate. England have none. As I said yesterday, midfield is where this England team has to improve if it's to win a tournament. As an aside, Spain had five of the top ten passers in the opposition half and, remembering how they outplayed Italy in the semi-final, I believe they'd have won the tournament if they'd had better finishers.

So sad that there is a hardcore minority of utter yobs who persist in dragging the country's name down with their mindless behaviour.
