Good that he has been kicked out of the Conservatives, good that he has been kicked out of the conference and hopefully he'll face the full consequences of the law. No excuses for that.

www.theguardian.com/news/2021/oct/05/labour-writes-to-tory-chair-over-donations-to-34-mps-by-firms-named-in-pandora-papersLabour has written to the Tory co-chair Oliver Dowden raising concerns about donations to 34 Tory MPs by the companies backed by a Russian-born oil tycoon linked to an alleged corruption scandal. Anneliese Dodds, the Labour party chair, sent a letter to Dowden questioning why almost one in 10 Conservative MPs had taken money from firms linked to Viktor Fedotov including Aquind. Aquind is currently seeking permission from the government to build a £1.2bn electricity interconnector between France and the UK, which the business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, is due to rule on within weeks. Fedotov’s company has made huge donations to the Conservative party and its politicians. He was revealed in the Pandora papers to have secretly co-owned a company once accused of participating in a massive corruption scheme.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/oct/06/pandora-papers-property-for-sale-britain-launder-moneyThere’s a “for sale” sign hanging over Britain. The Pandora papers have exposed how secrecy, influence, property and other assets are freely available to the highest bidder. Huge data dumps like this provide an invaluable peek into the secret world of offshore finance and the way it is exploited by the world’s richest people. Yet again, the UK and its tax havens stand at the heart of the world’s tax avoidance and dirty money crises. Britain asks few questions, doesn’t care who you are, and doesn’t mind where your money comes from.

www.theguardian.com/business/2021/oct/10/energy-firms-not-expect-much-help-treasury-kwasi-kwartengThe Treasury has issued an extraordinary reprimand to the business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, after he suggested he was consulting the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, about support for firms struggling with soaring energy prices. Representatives from firms in key industries including steel and paper are said to have told Kwarteng at a meeting on Friday that many are “days away” from having to halt production because of spiralling costs. A source said the business secretary had asked his team to help with work on an agreed list of proposals that could be passed on to the Treasury in the next few days. However, Treasury sources denied the department had yet received any proposals or even discussions about support for ailing essential industries, despite claims made by Kwarteng to broadcasters on Sunday morning. Kwarteng was accused of “making things up” when he said he and Sunak were considering the options.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10089657/MP-Claudia-Webbe-guilty-told-string-untruths-harassment-campaign.htmlEx-Labour MP Claudia Webbe, 56, is facing jail over a campaign of harassment. Court told Leicester East MP made threatening phone calls to Michelle Merritt. She became suspicious of Ms Merritt's relationship with partner Lester Thomas. Sentencing was adjourned until November 4 at Westminster Magistrates' Court. A Corbynite MP is facing the prospect of jail after being convicted of threatening to attack a female friend of her boyfriend with acid. Claudia Webbe, 56, who sits in the Commons as an independent after being suspended by Labour, also threatened to share nude pictures of Michelle Merritt, 59, in an 18-month campaign of phone-call harassment. District Judge Paul Goldspring said the seriousness of her threats ‘crossed the custody threshold’.

Claudia Webbe sits as an independent MP having been chucked out of the Labour Party . She is facing a possible jail term . Claudia and her partner Lester Thomas are back together or are at least showing a united front . Whatever , disgraceful behaviour , do we want someone acting like this in Westminster to represent the views of her constituents . Her time will soon be up , I’m just surprised Corbyn and Abbott have supported her throughout the trial . In fact I’m bloody furious . The Labour Party have called for her to resign but she won’t go gracefully .

An independent Councillor from one of the most deprived areas of the country accused of living in Northern France in a Chateau. Why does politics seem to attract so right arses? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-58885565

I read that. I read a lot of OpenDemocracy. It's the nearest I have to a Saturday newspaper. A firm that is struggling enough to participate in a government fund that is for struggling businesses but not struggling enough to stop making donations to the Conservative Party. Hmmm.

Very interesting article. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10105209/Former-minister-Owen-Paterson-says-partner-killed-amid-fears-scandal-claims.htmlFormer Tory Cabinet minister Owen Paterson has said his wife killed herself because she feared they would both be destroyed by ‘erroneous’ claims that he was involved in a political scandal. The claim by the MP for North Shropshire is in a highly emotional statement made by him last month to Parliament’s anti-sleaze watchdog. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone is expected to rule soon on whether Mr Paterson’s work for Randox breached the code of conduct for MPs.

I see Southern Water were busy dumping raw severage along the coastline at 60 sites . They had previously been fined a fair wad for the same thing but hey ho , they , along with other private water companies can carry on regardless thanks to Johnson and his band of desperados. The list of MPs who voted against the amendment include, of course. Danny K and Lucy Allan.
Anyone thinking of enjoying a wild water swim in our rivers must think again , it would be madness to do so.

O/T, there must surely have been a punk rock group called Raw Sewage?

Rishi Sunak told Andrew Marr this morning that someone on a salary of £24,000 paid income tax of £180. He quotes the annual salary and the monthly income tax. As slippery as an eel coated in KY jelly and swimming in a tank of WD40.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59049343Ex-minister Owen Paterson could be suspended from the Commons for 30 days after an MPs' watchdog found he had "repeatedly" used his position as an MP to benefit two companies who paid him as a consultant. The watchdog described his actions as "an egregious case of paid advocacy". www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/oct/26/owen-paterson-faces-suspension-breaking-lobbying-rulesUnder a law introduced in the wake of the MPs’ expenses scandal, any MP suspended for more than 10 days can face a trigger ballot where their constituents decide whether to force a byelection by supporting a recall petition. Ten per cent of the electors in Paterson’s seat would need to support the petition for a byelection to be called.

So on Webbe as she was sentenced today. This from the Guido site, as I know many of you are big fans... CLAUDIA WEBBE SENTENCED TO 10 WEEKS IN CUSTODY, SUSPENDED FOR TWO YEARSClaudia Webbe has been sentenced to ten weeks in custody, which will be suspended for two years. She has also been handed 200 hours of community service and ordered to pay £1000 in compensation, plus £120 in court costs. Webbe was found guilty of harassment last month, after threatening to throw acid over a friend of her partner.
Reacting to the news, a senior Tory source tells Guido:
“Webbe is the seventh Labour MP to be handed a jail sentence, suspended or otherwise, in the past 10 years. We had Illsley, Chaytor, Devine, McShane and Morley thieving; Onasanya perverting the course of justice and now Webbe harassing members of the public. Everything from fingers in the till to acid in the face. It’s hardly surprising that they’re so strongly against the police and sentencing bill. Thankfully we are building thousands of new prison places.”
Guido’s mole also tells him Webbe’s barrister argued that she’s broke, and can only pay a maximum of £100 a month towards her compensation costs. Presumably Claudia’s hoping the judge is unaware that MPs’ salaries are public knowledge.
UPDATE I: Labour have confirmed that Webbe has finally been expelled from the party. She was told she’d be booted after the guilty verdict came through last month and was given 14 days to appeal – she didn’t. Now she’s gone.
UPDATE II: Webbe has released a statement:
“I am very disappointed by the decision of the magistrate and want to strongly reiterate that I am innocent. I am lodging an appeal and despite today’s sentence I fully expect the appeal to be granted and that, ultimately, it will be successful.”So set to continue for some time yet by the looks if she is granted an appeal. Which means I gather she won't resign and will remain MP for Leicester East.
