Some might find this an interesting read:
Definitely interesting and worrying at the same time because we don’t know what the MPs have backed. Is it the same as was in the election manifesto or will it prove to be different? if his way does the country some good then it will be fine. However, even if this is the case but the way of achieving it differs from the Manifesto then that is a worry for democracy in the long term. Time will tell. I can imagine the King saying to him this morning for goodness sake be here for a while as I have do already have a very busy schedule in the lead up to Christmas!

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/27/rishi-sunak-rehires-five-ministers-entitled-to-redundancy-payoutsRishi Sunak has rehired five ministers who are entitled to redundancy payouts after resigning from government only seven weeks ago. The new prime minister filled his cabinet with allies including Dominic Raab and Grant Shapps who were once loyal to Boris Johnson but switched to back Sunak as leader. Ministers sacked and reappointed are able to claim thousands of pounds in redundancy pay as long as they have been out of a ministerial post for at least three weeks. Raab, Michael Gove, Steve Barclay, Grant Shapps and Johnny Mercer, who have all got their old jobs back after leaving Johnson’s government, are entitled to receive £16,876 each.

Could understand if they were sacked but resigning isn’t a redundancy situation for anyone else. Can anyone explain why? It even says in the article Ministers sacked then reappointed can claim….. they weren’t sacked?

Jesus this has got to stop. Truss can take away a fair wad for being in post a nanosecond and doing her best to bankrupt the Country which is bad enough and now this. Once again this isn’t a dig against the Tory party, it’s the bloody system that needs changing because this would be the case whatever party was involved . It’s bloody obscene in my book.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/30/tory-peer-apparently-misled-watchdog-investigating-his-alleged-misconductA Conservative hereditary peer appears to have misled the House of Lords standards watchdog during an investigation into his alleged misconduct. The House of Lords commissioners for standards have been investigating the Earl of Shrewsbury over claims he misused his parliamentary position to lobby for a healthcare firm that was paying him. The peer told the watchdog he had declared his financial interest to Whitehall officials when he promoted one of the firm’s products to them last year. However, the Guardian has obtained a copy of the email which he sent to the officials, and he did not state in it that he was being paid by the firm, SpectrumX. Members of the House of Lords, whenever they communicate with ministers and officials, are required to declare whether they have a financial interest. The commissioners for standards are examining whether the peer was paid to lobby specifically for SpectrumX and whether he properly declared to ministers and government officials that he was receiving money from the firm when he contacted them. According to previously leaked emails, he claimed he had arranged meetings with a number of politicians and officials to promote SpectrumX, which paid him £3,000 a month to be its consultant between the summer of 2020 and January this year. These emails showed that the peer boasted of his “very considerable” potential to open doors for the firm, through what he called “my extremely high-level contacts”. He said one of his contacts was “at the very top of the feed chain”.

I would hope that a Labour victory next time might put a stop to it, but with Starmer in charge I'm not so sure.

That's why this thread absolutely must stay. When Labour get in, which seems inevitable, then I hope they're kept to the same standards because they'll be a stampede towards the troughs once the barn door has swung open. I'll say what I've said for a long time, they're all at it to varying degrees.

All our politicians of whatever party must be held accountable at all times particularly when they are in power.
It’s because we can debate as we do that we can be grateful that we live in a country where such debate is permitted.
It does have to be said though that, recently the government seems to have discovered every banana skin that it is possible to find!

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/nov/03/tory-mp-andrew-bridgen-faces-suspension-over-lobbying-breachesThe Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen faces suspension from the House of Commons and has been asked to apologise after a cross-party committee found that he took a “cavalier” approach to rules about paid lobbying. The standards committee endorsed findings from Kathryn Stone, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, that Bridgen breached rules on paid advocacy and on registering interests, after he approached ministers and officials on behalf of a forestry company that gave him a donation and a visit to Ghana. The committee said that as well as apologising to the Commons, Bridgen, the MP for North West Leicestershire since 2010, should apologise personally to Stone for a “completely unacceptable” attempt to put pressure on her. The report said Bridgen emailed Stone to ask about what the MP said were rumours that the commissioner would accept a peerage from Boris Johnson, and to suggest that this was dependent on her “arriving at the ‘right’ outcomes” when conducting parliamentary standards investigations.

Chris Bryant made somewhat excitable claims during the fracking debate & vote. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63322533REPORT FOR MR SPEAKER: INVESTIGATION INTO EVENTS OUTSIDE THE “NO” LOBBY ON 19 OCTOBER Report prepared by the Serjeant-at-Arms, the Clerk of the Journals and the Clerk of the Liaison Committee 1. We have been asked to investigate the incident during the division which took place at 7pm on 19 October 2022, which gave rise to allegations that Members were bullied or manhandled into voting against their will. Conclusion 15. It is undoubtedly the case that it was very intense in the lobby – voices were raised; some Members were clearly stressed and intemperate, but their conduct did not amount to sustained personalised abuse, bullying or physical pressure to vote.

More on Bridgen. www.thenational.scot/news/20075557.andrew-bridgen-tory-mp-lied-conduct-family-feud/Brigden lied under oath and behaved in an abusive, arrogant and aggressive manner in a dispute over his family business, a High Court judge has ruled. A Conservative MP branded “dishonest” by a judge has been ordered to pay £800,000 and evicted from his luxurious country home after a dispute involving his family potato business. Andrew Bridgen, 57, has spent years suing his family business, AB Produce, which supplies potatoes and other vegetables to catering companies and supermarkets. In March, a High Court judge ruled that he “lied” under oath, behaved in an “abusive”, “arrogant” and “aggressive” way, and was so dishonest that nothing he said about the dispute could be taken at face value. www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/nov/11/shaun-bailey-met-police-tory-lockdown-eventThe Metropolitan police took no action over an apparent Christmas party at Conservative headquarters in London during lockdown in 2020 attended by Shaun Bailey, then the party’s candidate for London mayor, it has emerged. In a statement, the force said that despite a much-published photograph showing Bailey amid a crowd of seeming revellers, some holding drinks and standing next to a buffet, there was not enough evidence to “disprove the version of events provided by attendees”. The decision not to take action against Bailey and the two dozen or so party staffers and aides seen packed into a room at Matthew Parker Street in central London, next to a table laden with platters of food, clears the path for the former mayoral candidate to become a peer. He is among a series of allies reportedly selected by Boris Johnson to be sent to the Lords in a resignation honours list. Had Bailey still faced a possible fine for breaching lockdown rules, the House of Lords appointment commission (Holac), which vets new peers, could have blocked the move. But the Met police decision is likely to provoke fresh controversy about the way the force investigated alleged lockdown breaches by senior politicians and aides, most notably inside Downing Street. When the photograph of the Tory HQ gathering emerged in December last year, prompting a police inquiry, Bailey, who lost to Sadiq Khan in the May 2021 mayoral election, stood down as chair of the London assembly’s police and crime committee. The photo showed several people, including the property developer and Tory donor Nick Candy, raising glasses of wine with a buffet laid out on a table next to them. Among angry responses to the photo, the then transport secretary, Grant Shapps, called it “disgraceful”.

The thing that worries me with all this is the future.
Should we, heaven forbid, ever have another crisis like covid, who the hell is going to take notice of anything we are asked/told to do.
I’m considered an old goody goody but even I am extremely doubtful as to my actions the next time a government tries to tell me what to do.
I’m sick of hearing about these ‘entitled’ nobodies who did exactly as they pleased while the majority didn’t. They must have been laughing up their well heeled sleeves at us.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/13/disgraced-tory-mps-shame-our-politics-will-rishi-sunak-keep-promise-clean-up-house#comment-159810602The slimy antics of Mr Hancock, the revolving disgraces of “Sir” Gavin and the continued presence in high office of Ms Braverman epitomise a culture of shamelessness. Fear of being shamed used to be an important regulator of the conduct of politicians. And politicians who shamed themselves generally accepted that they had to express their regrets and depart the scene. On the rare occasions when people were given a second chance in cabinet, the usual rule was that they had to face an election before there could be the possibility of a return to the top table. Now there is no transgression so appalling that the perpetrator cannot scheme for a rapid comeback – often successfully.

The Qatari government made gifts to members of parliament worth £251,208 in the 12 months to October 2022, including luxury hotel stays, business-class flights and tickets to horse-racing events. The value of Qatar’s gifts was greater than the amount spent by the 15 other countries whose governments made donations to British MPs combined. And it was more than six times the £37,661 in gifts and hospitality given to MPs by the United Arab Emirates, the second-highest foreign government donor. In some cases, MPs who received freebies later appeared to speak favourably about Qatar in parliamentary debates, or to deflect attention away from issues that the authorities have been keen to downplay.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11454467/Taxpayers-face-astronomical-9-2bn-bill-collapsed-energy-firms.htmlThe beleaguered energy watchdog is under fire after it emerged the taxpayer has spent £9.2billion bailing out failed suppliers over the past 18 months. MPs have taken aim at Ofgem for the huge bill following the collapse of Bulb and 28 other firms. It has cost an astonishing £2.7billion – or £94 for every UK household – to transfer the customers of 28 collapsed companies to rival firms. But that sum pales in comparison to the £6.5billion required for Bulb alone, making it the largest state rescue since the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2008. The price being paid for the Bulb debacle is the equivalent of every household in Britain coughing up £230 to prop up the business. Tory MP Tobias Ellwood yesterday called for a public inquiry into what has happened to the taxpayer cash. He said: ‘I think they should all be called in – Bulb, Ofgem and the other suppliers – to explain what has happened and where the money has gone.
