Just discovered Call My Agent on Netflix. If you can deal with sub-titles then I would really recommend this. Great cast and really well photographed and scripted.

Don't know if any of you take a peep at the Sky Arts channel, but there are some very good documentaries on there called " discovering ??". Gives a good insight into various film stars. Watched a couple this week about Burt Lancaster & Humphrey Bogart and recorded another about Henry Fonda. A very enjoyable watch if you wish to know more about some truly 'great' actors. I only recently noticed that Sky Arts had been added to our channel list. I've just watched a Tales of the Unexpected episode with Harry Andrews...now that was weird! I'll certainly keep a look out for the " discovering..." documentaries. Sky Arts is a good channel. Those " discovering ..." documentaries are really enjoyable career reviews of great directors and actors. Couple of quick recommendations - The Good Lord Bird (on Netflix I think) with Ethan Hawke is worth finding. Tells the story of the abolitionist John Brown and the lead up to the American Civil War. I also stumbled upon one of those long, commentary-free BBC4 films the other night. It was a journey by rail, road and sea from the northern tip of North Island, New Zealand to the southern tip of South Island. I found it strangely compulsive and relaxing (yes, I did nod off, it was very late) and the landscape was magnificent.

I'd like to give this a try - seems to be very well reviewed. Unless someone has a reading difficulty I've never understood why some refuse to watch anything subtitled. It combines reading with watching TV so there's a sense in which I'm more actively engaged and less passive. Each to their own but I'd hate to limit myself to English speaking works only.

An excellent WW2 film, if that's your cup of tea👍, along with "Von Ryan's Express" (Frank Sinatra, Trevor Howard) which also has the bonus of featuring railways. two very good films but the trains is i think one of burt lancaster's best films as the it just ramps up the tension. doing it in black and white just gives it more of a period reality. Slightly off-topic, but "Field of Dreams" with Kevin Costner, was Burt Lancaster's final film, and is a thoroughly enjoyable feel-good fantasy.

Another one from the 'slow television' BBC 4 Scandi imports. The Last Igloo.
Kind of puts everything we struggle with in modern life into perspective. Mr Inuit hunter. He's the man. A brilliant short film on the dying art of being a truly heroic human being.
I lost count of the number of ways I'd have probably ended up dead during his typical day. Think my dog team would probably resort to eating me for being just rubbish.

Apologies if already mentioned but 'White Tiger'on Netflix is a good watch. Indian film - part sub-titles part English.

The Sony movie channels are not too bad at times as long as you can put up with the number of commercial breaks as well!

We are slowly working our way through "Spiral"...currently half way through series 3! We have only watched Series 1 but thought it was really good. I hope the Beeb keep it available for a long time as there are a lot of series! Picking up on the subject of subtitles - the French certainly give you a lot of dialogue for your money and it can be a bit hard to keep up. We find the slower pace of Scandi dramas a bit easier to handle. 😉 The Valhalla Murders (Icelandic) is one of the best since The Bridge, which was our all time favourite.

I have a smattering of school French but I actually think that it's a bit of a hindrance! With Danish etc you have to rely completely on the subtitles which somehow simplifies the process.

The new Denzel Washington film is worth a watch 'The little things' also 'Hunter hunter' and 'Alone' all three of which I think are much better than their IMDB rating would suggest

I've enjoyed lots of foreign films on various channels, and the sub-titles don't bother me one bit in the least.
Two of the best I have watched over the years are :
DAS BOOT...... The original BBC TV series. Probably one of the best war films ever.
and
CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG..... Award winning Mongolian film. Gentle, but interesting.

Must admit, I have never watched so much TV this past 12 months.
Another shout out for 'Call my Agent', excellent and it's good to see stars (including Sigourney Weaver) send themselves up. It's very funny.
I would also recommend, along with the others, 'News of the World' it's easy on the eye, with a nice optimistic ending, which is a nice thing to see in these times.
I've just started 'Narcos' about Pablo Escobar and 'Resident Alien' which is quirky and funny.
I am also watching 'The Great' on Channel 4, which is crude and rude, and very funny in parts.

Shown on Sky Atlantic in this country - two series so far. Certainly watchable but not half as good as the original film - which is understandable as that set a very high mark. More land based (French resistance and American Nazi sympathisers) but if you are prepared to have your credulity stretched a little it is a good watch.

Thanks. I'm always a bit wary when they attempt a remake or a sequel to a classic. By chance I recently came across "Breakthrough", a 1979 war film starring Richard Burton, playing the character of Sergeant Steiner. I was about 20 minutes or so into the film when I thought, hang on a minute I'm sure this character has been in a previous war film. It then came to me, this was a sequel, of sorts to the far superior "Cross of Iron." I have to admit that I've never ever seen this sequel (of sorts) before and I hope I never ever come across it again. It was awful and so sad to see Richard Burton looking so ill by that point.
