Root steps down as captain. The only surprise was it didn't happen after the Ashes Top class batsman, terrible captain, and yes, he should have given up the captaincy two series ago. It's going to be interesting to see who will be appointed. Or will Broad get it as a stopgap ? I wouldn't give it to Stokes as he is a bit injury prone, plus he has not been in a good mental state of health lately. Best to let him get 100% healthy maybe before he's considered.

Joe has 4/5 years left at the top.
I just hope he continues to rack up the tons and by the time he retires he will be recognised as the greatest English batsman of all time.

"greatest England batsman of all time" !! We agree on most things cricket but that is debatable old chap π€. It would be interesting to have a poll and see what English cricket fans think. Personally I can think of a few from the past who would maybe claim that title. If Rooty carries on for the next 4/5 years and maintains his current form he would be up there, but not just yet. π€π

Good to see the County Championship underway this morning. Tom Haines going well for Sussex, if he keeps on improving he could soon be on the selectors thoughts. Tom Haines going well again. Hopefully the selectors are keeping note.

By all accounts a thoroughly decent bloke. Hope he succeeds

Whether or not Rob Key is a "thoroughly decent bloke" surely cannot be the yardstick by which we measure his appointment: we need an individual who is capable of identifying the root (!) causes of the utter shambles which is England cricket, and a " decent bloke" may not be prepared to upset people, when, it seems to me, some people need to be upset, and diverted from their present course. In cricketing terms, someone with the talent and ability of Ian Botham, allied to the professionalism and application of Geoffey Boycott - not forgetting the smoothing diplomatic skills of Colin Cowdrey. I do not envy the person facing this task.

Played 5 times for Australia, now coaches in the Netherlands and was visiting relatives.
Currently in an induced coma.

Very little choice I'm afraid. Flintoff was a mistake and I cannot see Stokes being any different.

Very little choice I'm afraid. From the current squad he's probably the only one guaranteed a starting place in the current eleven. I wonder who will be vice captain?

Rob Key has risked controversy by suggesting he could select Joe Clarke three years after the player was shamed over a WhatsApp group that " demeaned women" and "trivialised rape".
Clarke's membership of the "pathetic" chat group had been identified during a court case that led to his former flatmate Alex Hepburn being sentenced to five years jail for raping a woman.
On Thursday England's new managing director suggested it might now be time to draw a line under the furore, as he said "you can't penalise people forever in life". "I'll have to look into exactly where that's been now and what's gone on in the past," Key said on the 25-year-old's international hopes. βBut, for me, I see no reason why not."

The Clarke debate is an interesting one. As far as I'm aware he's never been found guilty of a crime, however was involved in some sexist whatsapp group messages, is that worthy of an effective lifetime ban from representing England? Some people will say yes, others will point to other England players (including the new captain) have been involved in various incidents and are free to play.
Some think that Clarke should not be involved as he has never shown any remorse, I don't whether that's true. But even if he did say sorry does that magically change anything?
I can understand why people wouldn't want him to represent our country but stopping players from playing on moral grounds is a very grey area.

Another round of county championship games underway, a good opportunity for the likes of Clarke etc to push their cases for test selection this summer.
The Clarke debate is an interesting one; it's three years now since he was dropped from the Lions squad, has he moved on? Sounds like Rob Key is now prepared to possibly give him the opportunity.
Saying that though, Key has also said:
"You could probably say there arenβt loads of people putting their hands up as openers. But there are lots in the middle order. People like Ollie Pope, Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett are playing well. It's almost a log jam".
It will be interesting to see if Clarke is indeed ahead of Pope and Duckett in the pecking order.
On current averages alone Duckett (75.50) leads the way from Pope (64.20). I couldn't find Clarke on the list. Looking at his scores so far this summer he has yet to get going.
I wonder how brave the selectors will be this summer?
It already sounds like Broad and Anderson will again be leading the new ball attack.

Hopefully Clarke has become more mature & responsible. Lots of individuals become better people after having done something terribly wrong in their lives. Maybe he is one of them, so I would consider him if his form is good enough. I'm sure none of us is perfect, and have bettered ourselves in learning from mistakes.

I wonder if the new One Day coach will see a way forward for the return of Alex Hales? Unlikely I guess as long as Morgan is captain.

Ben Stokes is playing for Durham against Worcester at New Road today.
Weather forecast is excellent. Should be a good crowd.

Durham 549/4 Ben Stokes 147 not out off 82 balls. 15 sixes 8 fours. 34 off one over from Baker. No fan of Stokes but the numbers are incredible, when he came in Bedingham was 81 not out and since raced to 119 whilst Stokes has had his fun.
