That's sad news to hear on Christmas day. He was a tough opening batsman and very brave. I remember him facing up to the feared Windies pace attack of 1976, years before batsmen had helmets etc. RIP to an England great.

Very sad to read about John Edrich, as a left handed opening bat I used to follow him closely. Without scoring a triple hundred though.
The courage he showed facing some of the most hostile bowling in the history of the game with very little protective kit and no protection from umpires was above and beyond.
Boycott used to say that it was almost impossible to score when 4 bouncers an over were being bowled. That era almost killed the game.

When you look back at that era (the YouTube video earlier in this thread says it all) it is amazing, but frightening at the same time to think that no one was badly injured or killed when facing those quick bowlers. There was an image of Brian Close after one of the games. He had his shirt off and his body was covered in bruises from the amount of times he had been hit. It was awful to look at. www.alamy.com/stock-photo-england-batsman-brian-close-shows-off-the-handy-work-of-west-indies-20113735.html

India certainly bounced back in the second test, won by 8 wickets with a day to spare and level the series 1-1. An excellent result given that they were not at full strength.

The Man of the Match was awarded the Johnny Mullagh medal. It's a new award in commemoration of the first Aboriginal cricket player to be inducted into Cricket Australia's Hall of Fame. I only found this out yesterday, and I also didn't realize that Jason Gillespie was part Aboriginal too. What a privilage it must be to have been the first player (Man of the Match) to have received that medal. There is an article about Johnny Mullagh on BBC Sport (cricket) if anyone is interested.

Australia certainly missed Warner too. I'm sure that England will have noticed that Australia's batting is somewhat suspect. Formidable bowling attack though.

Crushing win for South Africa too, beating Sri Lanka by an innings and 45 runs.

I see that New Zealand are now ranked No. 1 best test team .... No surprise really, as not a lot to choose between the top teams at present. Williamson & Taylor both class batsmen. I've always rated Southee, & Boult is a very good quick when fit. For a small nation they do tend to 'bat' (excuse the pun) above their weight.

Going back to John Edrich, I saw him for Surrey against Shropshire in the old Gillette Cup at Wellington, in the seventies, and I believe that Andy Barnard bowled a maiden to him.

They certainly go quietly about their business under the radar. They have a quality batting line up that's for sure (their top 6 from the latest test) Tom Latham test average 42.34 (11 test hundreds) Tom Blundell 40.15 (2) Kane Williamson 52.90 (23) Ross Taylor 46.04 (19) Henry Nicholls 41.56 (6) BJ Watling 38.42 (8) It's about time that they had a 4/5 test match series against us, they certainly warrant it.

Another good day in the field for New Zealand, they dismissed Pakistan for 297.
England have arrived in Sri Lanka ahead of their 2 test match series. Meanwhile Sri Lanka are again struggling out in South Africa, all out for 157 in just 40 overs.
Update: South Africa closed on 148 for 1. They trail Sri Lanka by 9 runs with 9 wickets remaining.

Bob Willis suggested some years ago that we should have two leagues of 6 teams in each, with a one up one down system. I am slowly coming around to his way of thinking as much as I would miss going to Windies & Sri Lanka to watch Winter cricket. The games do become a bit of a nonsense when Tests finish in three days. I'm OK with the One Day Internationals and T20 remaining as it is because upsets can happen in these formats. Sad I know for us cricket lovers, but we have to move with the times.

If they were to implement that as of now then (based on current ICC rankings), division 1 would comprise of: Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa The second division would be: Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland.

In Sri Lanka’s defence they’ve been absolutely decimated by injuries, they were in a good position in the first test, lost a set batsman who then couldn’t bowl, lost a further 2 bowlers whilst South Africa racked up 600.

Pretty much as I would see the divisions if it went down that road. Although I'd put Pakistan slightly ahead of Sri Lanka at the moment.

www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jan/04/cricket-england-sri-lanka-tour-jimmy-andersonEngland’s plans for their two-Test series in Sri Lanka have been rocked by the news that Moeen Ali has tested positive for Covid-19 and must now isolate for 10 days. Moeen, who has returned to the Test squad after a year-long absence but was central to the 3-0 win in Sri Lanka in 2018, was shown to have contracted the virus during testing that place when the squad arrived at Hambantota airport on Sunday. In a statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board on Monday, 10 days away from the start of the first Test in Galle, it was also confirmed that Chris Woakes has been deemed a close contact and must also isolate for seven days before further tests that would allow his release.

Does being on the same plane for 12/14 hours with the rest of the squad not qualify everyone concerned being in close contact, and not just Woakes ? The mind boggles at some things !! Please enlighten me.
