Another game completed in under three days. These 'no contest games' will just not attract fans to watch Test cricket. The same is happening to Sri Lanka in NZ.
It's fantastic that the younger players from the 'SECOND TIER' Test match playing teams can get to play against the top cricketers, but eventually it will, to a certain extent, drain their confidence.
Much better for them to be playing against sides with almost equal ability - be it slightly less or slightly more - thereby enabling them to put in better performances and gain confidence from winning a few games. No team likes being humiliated, and that is what is happening in some cases - so that is one very good reason to have two leagues in Test cricket.
No matter what sport, if a team is winning it 'will attract spectators' and in my opinion this is the best road for the ICC to go down.

In my opinion the biggest issue in test cricket is the extent of home dominance. I believe that had the NZ-Pakistan series been played in Pakistan, and the South Africa-Sri Lanka series been played in Sri Lanka, the results would’ve been completely different. Not looking at the rankings but I think generally the top 4 test teams are England, Australia, India and New Zealand, with South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh in a second tier, and then Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in a third tier. Not getting the broadcast deals and tourists from England, Australia and India will massively hinder the lesser countries so would need very careful management to avoid being a closed shop. There’s already dissatisfaction about the level of power the ECB, BCCI and CA have in international cricket.

It's not just about acclimatising to the conditions, it's also about playing competitive warm up games versus decent opposition. As far as I am aware England have no warm up games before they play Sri Lanka in the 2 test match series.

New Zealand rose to the top of the world Test rankings after they thrashed Pakistan by an innings and 176 runs in the second Test to win the series 2-0. Pakistan, resuming on 8-1, were dismissed for 186 on the fourth day, with Kyle Jamieson taking 6-48. Pace bowler Jamieson, playing in just his sixth Test, finished with 11 wickets in Christchurch and was the series' leading wicket-taker with 16. It is the first time New Zealand have topped the Test rankings. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/55557223A well deserved achievement and hopefully they will now warrant an extended test series against England.

England already batting after tea on the first day of the first test after the hosts were bowled out for 135.
A very poor batting display by Sri Lanka.

If I was Chris Silverwood or Neil Fairbrother then I’d be sending Shagger in at the fall of next wicket. Want to get us past this Ceylonese total before the pitch deteriorates any further and he’s the only Englishman I’d back to get the job done.

England well in command at tea on the second day. Excellent knock by the captain and Dan Lawrence on debut.
Update: England close on 320 for 4, Joe Root unbeaten on 168. England's lead, 185 runs.
Shame that it was a curtailed day due to rain.

Bess, Leach, Wood and Broad is far too long a tail.
Sure enough, they didn't last long.

Good to see Moeen back in the dressing room, released from isolation this morning.
Tough day for Englands bowlers
Close day 3 with SL 156-2 130 runs behind.

I really hope we aren't required to chase down 150 on a 5th day pitch.

England are really lacking a world class spinner or two. Feel for Leech, he's been dealt a fairly rotten hand over the last 18 months and has basically no match practice - I think if we stuck with him through thick and thin, he could be a very passable test spinner who held up his end most of the time and did well on turning pitches. Never going to be Swann, but the best red-ball spinner we've had since him and been badly misused imo. Hopefully we can get through these two games with plenty of overs under his belt ahead of the India series where our spinners will be given a robust examination. Bess, for me, has a long way to go to be a good test spinner and it feels rather as though, once again, he has been picked in part for his batting. Plenty of time and hopefully he'll develop into a fine player, but I think Leech should be viewed as #1 in the medium term - it's not like he's over the hill, easily 5 years left in his prime.

Well Leach ends up with a "proper" fivefer paraphrasing Atherton, both spinners looking much better today than they did earlier. Hopefully indicative of getting back to sharpness with overs under their belt.
