Gwyneddblue must be sketching out at this mini collapse. Don’t worry sir, this England team bats long.

Running between the wickets seems suicidal on Bairstow's part.

Bad Light - 38-3
Some wicked deliveries beating everything including the keeper and going for a couple of 4's

36 more to win. 7 wickets in hand (and Shagger on a King Pair ).

Well Leach ends up with a "proper" fivefer paraphrasing Atherton, both spinners looking much better today than they did earlier. Hopefully indicative of getting back to sharpness with overs under their belt. They bowled 102 overs between them in this test match so will certainly have benefited from the time out in the middle, especially in Sri Lanka's second innings.

A good win in the end, credit to Sri Lanka for coming back strongly and taking the game into the 5th day. (I wouldn't have thought that after day one).
There's talk of Anderson replacing Stuart Broad, personally I would leave well alone and expect England to go with the same eleven for the second test, again in Galle, starting on Friday.

Batting against spinners with a new ball is a nightmare...bounce and turn aplenty...just quite hard to hold the ball as its so slippery.
Do you try to get to the pitch of the ball or go deep into your crease to give yourself more time and risk being out lbw?

I would say go forward, get to the pitch of the ball where possible. Joe Root is an excellent player of spin, he doesn't allow the bowler to settle. Bairstow is a good player of spin too. Both players certainly showed their experience of playing on the sub continent over the course of the last 5 days.

The trick is, as exemplified by Joe Root, not to let the bowler to settle into a good line and length rhythm....anything to get him to try something different, out of his comfort zone. Difficult to do (and virtually impossible against a certain D. L. Underwood) but certainly the best strategy.

Boring test matches are such a rarity with England over recent years, so enjoyable to watch and also showing genuine signs of progress and squad depth, how good was Dan Lawrence on debut. Hopefully the start of a great year for Root and the test side.

A terrific game down under
1300 runs and a big chase on the final day.
This is what makes test cricket so special.
Raises questions about how good the Aussies are, and also the depth of quality players at India’s disposal. India won with what effectively is a reserve team.
I’m sure the Aussies will take defeat graciously.....

Brilliant victory for India in the match and the series. It’s been an incredible series to follow, and I wonder what odds you could have got on an India series win when they were 36 all out?!

Well Paine has got egg on his face, after the comment he made following the third Test - something along the lines of “wait ‘til we get to the Gabba, mate!” Apparently they haven’t (hadn’t) lost there for about a million years.🤣
