Dear Pilch, I appreciate that your intentions are to maintain a semblance of sanity and realism on this site, but really, some of your contributions are the written equivalent of a wet blanket. You may be right, but in the circumstances, your timing seems a bit awry..... let's all try and absorb today's developments before attempting to predict with any certainty what may or may not happen. im basing my observations on speaking to him quite often, and walking past his house most days with my eyes open, his footballing ability at the town so far, oh and his off the field antics of recent i hope i'm wrong as i like him, cotterill is certainly a lifeline for him ps if i want an opinion i'll have one whether you like it or not Seriously, what information can you gather from walking past someone’s house? It’s laughable. Is he doing lines of cocaine off his front door step?

Good to hear a lot of positive results on the arrival of Steve Cotterill. At last a manager with experience and so pleased it was not Hurst who after Shropshire star article saying he was willing to come back I felt really glum that it might happen☹️, I only heard late afternoon of this appointment and reading all your posts I think this could be very good for us going forward, So cmon you blues get at em. Looking forward to getting back in the stadium as soon as poss.😄⚽️

Happy with this appointment. Think he'll bring organisation and a steady head to the club. Don't think it will be spectacular to watch this season but we'll be much better organised than earlier in the season.
Love the interview on Shrewsweb - all very Alan Partridge about which service station he had the Covid test at, and which one he met the Shrewsbury board at

whatever our feeling about this appointment it would be great if we can all get behind him. we know there are issues with the team we are not here because we are defending well and that will take some time to sort out, also players dont suddenly get fit and that will also take time. This is an appointment we can all get behind. I very shrewd appointment by the board. Onwards and upwards!
Wonder what the players think? Can't really see anyone being unhappy about it.

happy with this appointment, no guarantee of sucsess but feel the team is now in the hands of a capable experienced manager that has seen every aspect of managment, .looking forward to a new chapter,he has not been in the game for a while so hopefully his new found enthusiasm will inspire the team to push on and start competing to a better level,3 and a half years is a big contract which shows commitment on both sides, good luck steve.

I’m not thrilled by this appointment but will of course back the new manager. Good to see that we have gone for someone with a lot of experience. His last spell was a disaster at Birmingham City. One of my close friends (supports Brum) said he has a massive ego and will just lose his temper frequently at players. Maybe we need that, Sam was a bit “too nice”. Fingers crossed anyway, if it clicks, we could be watching some entertaining football. Or, go on, be excited. Even if only for more "robust" after match interviews if he loses his temper with Dunny.

I think you might be right. Followed by one or two others out the door too? I’ll third that. Can’t see those two getting on at all. Cummings/Cotterill might not get on well, but, if Cummings does what the new manager says, this could be the start of the very best time of his career. The opportunity is there, Cotterill isn't going to say no if he finds he has someone with 15-20 goals a season in him.

I doubt the Chairman has 5 goals in him these days, oh, I see, you mean Cummings ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Yes, love to see Cummings react in the right way and make his mark, hope this is the start of something big for everyone at the club.

Encouraging reads. When I heard he’d been appointed, my only real concern about him was what had he been for 2 years? But hopefully he’s better for the time away- doesn’t sound like he’s lost interest. We’ve been after a “young, hungry, ambitious” manager in the last few appointments but Cotterill seems as hungry and ambitious as any of them. Hopefully we’re a good fit like his other successes.

Three and a half years take him to 60. May be this will be his last job. At one stage Cotterill was looked upon as a promising young English manager but it has never quite come off for him. Found to be lacking at a higher level but a solid appointment for League One and League Two. Turned us down four years ago. In that time his stock as probably fallen and ours may have risen a little. We're not quite in as bad a state as when Hurst took over and so there is a fair chance that if he does a competent job he can get us out of trouble. i hope so

I don't think Lewis Cox and co will be short of quotes! Fans might find it takes some time to get used to Cotterill, he's opinionated, can be spiky, but football obsessed and very knowledgeable. He's done really well where he's been allowed to control everything and everyone gets behind his ideas. It's all or nothing. You're in or you're out. It won't be boring...

from the shropshire star "Long ball game? Pass and move? 4-4-2? Fans are keen for answers. And Shrewsbury supporters are desperate to see a repeat of the forward-thinking 3-5-2 new boss Steve Cotterill used in blowing away the rest of League One in his time at Bristol City, writes Lewis Cox.
Cotterill, who has been in management 25 years and yesterday made Town the 10th club he has managed after more than two years out of the game, admitted he has never stood still and always looked to evolve in over two decades.
Asked if that 3-5-2 system, which involved a central defensive fulcrum and attack-minded defenders, is ‘the Steve Cotterill way’, the 56-year-old boss replied: “No, I think you evolve with the times."
"You can go into a club and you can want to play football but if those players can’t play and are nervous – you need to go through a period of suffering.
“Trying to change a style, mid-season or when a team’s down the bottom, it’s really difficult. But I think over the years my philosophy has changed when I started with Cheltenham.
“You evolve with time and have to go with time. I’ve always been a student of the game. I think I was one of the youngest and first 10 to get the UEFA Pro Licence."
“It’s a love of mine, I love my football and hopefully I’ve got a really good group of lads that want to learn and start climbing the table.”
Cotterill’s Shrewsbury tenure began when he oversaw training at Sundorne Castle yesterday and tomorrow, live on BBC and BT’s digital platforms, Town are in FA Cup second-round action at home to National League South Oxford City." The boss – who arrives with a reputation of demanding intensity, passion and high standards – delivered all of those traits in his media unveiling at Montgomery Waters Meadow yesterday.
But beyond barking instructions and drilling players, he is a self-professed ‘student of the game’ and his lust to learn and ‘evolve’ took him all over the continent.
“The best thing that happened to me was going abroad with a really good friend, we’ve done it a few times,” he added.
“It’s easy to get over to France, we stayed in Lille, we’ve gone to Belgium to see games, all around France, to Lille and what was going on there and sessions"

I really liked what I heard from his interview and I get the impression that he doesn't suffer fools gladly, and everyone will have to tow the line. I've read other interviews of his and he seems a real task master which is something we really need. Personally, I think we've got a really good squad, if slightly unbalanced, and if he can build confidence in the players and get a solid foundation, I think we are well capable of climbing the league. One thing I do hope is that Matt Millar still wants to stop now Ricketts has gone. I think he's got something about him, and if Cotterill does favour 352, he could be the perfect right wingback.

Fans wanted passion after " dull man" Askey, you've got it now.
Never short of opinion is Steve clearly, a good thing.
This will be entertaining that's for sure.
Can't see him being a fan of Cummings social media "antics" etc, strikes me as too old school for all that b******s, won't take passengers, good!
Sam was a nice guy, Askey zero passion.
Best appointment since Turner the second coming.
Some players are in for a shock that's for sure.

Not listened to the interviews yet but does it mention anything about the chairman bending his arm to get back into manager and taking the job? Just the amount of time he's been out of the game that's all, just seems a bit of a strange one because of that. I would have thought he'd be happy taking it easy now (not sure whether he has been applying for vacant jobs in the meantime, mind).
