They weren't a good Luton side today, but they didn't need to be, Mick Harford admitted in his post match interview that they didn't play well today. Correct. I thought they were one of the poorest sides we’ve played this season and can’t believe they are top. Still, they beat us without trying. But it's a results game and Luton are top for a reason but yeah they didn't look like a top 6 team but the table doesn't lie. It's a bit like us last season, the football in a lot of away games wasn't what I'd call top of the table stuff, all about just getting the job done and on too the next game.

Luton are a good side and fair play to them they're having a great season, but I'm sure they'll be the first to admit they were awful today but still won at an absolute canter.

Oh come on they knocked the ball about miles better than us. Maybe not as expensively assembled and naturally talented as a Charlton or Sunderland but confidence and everyone knowing their roles goes a long way.
Let’s not show the bitterness that teams showed to us last season.

I hear Darrell Clarke is available. With the right backing he could do a hell of a job. Bristol Rovers fans talked about him the way some of ours talked about Askey and now Ricketts. It always looks better from a distance. Surely there’s a more positive choice? Recognising Ricketts’ inexperience, why not recruit an experienced guy as his assistant, someone to support him? There must be some senior guys around who could take a Lennie Lawrence type role. Ricketts could yet be a good manager having a bad start to his career. He doesn’t have experienced support.

Let’s not show the bitterness that teams showed to us last season. Miles better than us still doesn’t make it great. They must be good to be where they are but they weren’t particularly good today and didn’t need to be. It was a low quality game, not helped by a poor pitch and soft referee, and they won it easily. But I’m not about to flatter or excuse us by making out Luton were really good today.

Some people have suggested bringing in GT to serve that role but there is one other candidate that might be better suited to a short term assisting role to SR. RW is supposed to be friend of Steve Cotterill's and maybe he could persuade him into a helping out until the end of the season. Cotterill's record at our level is pretty good and was only found out championship level e.g getting the sack from Birmingham last season. As you say Ricketts could ultimately be a good manager in the future but he's been pushed along too quickly too soon. He should be still at Wrexham on a gradual learning curve where he appeared to be doing ok.

It's the tenacity to win on a cold January day when not playing your absolute best that is missing in comparison to last season. Put us up against Stoke or Wolves and we have that tenacity. Don't care about the replay now, it can't be our first choice team anyway because of the rules, but it has to be instilled in the team now that every match from now to the end of the season is a cup match.

The space in wide areas for them was unreal .

Welsh mafia out, said it when he stated and im saying it again. Extremely poor leadership from the top regarding management appointments from day one since the snake departed.

I agree with the majority of this thread. - At least a thrashing at home can be used to change the XI now surely. Some changes were made to the XI for this game, fat lot of good it did us!

Vincelot and Golbourne were not the changes I had in mind.
At least Campbell started well.

Play 4-3-3 and stick with it.
Shaun Whalley is our best player, we need to utilise him.
3-5-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 diamond just doesn’t work.

What about 4-1-1-1-1-1-1
Whalley has to start next game along with someone on the opposite flank. Maybe Laurent or Campbell. The full backs need protection.
I take it Payne is illegible both for the cup game and against his parent club Rovers.
So much potential in this team, it would be criminal for them to go down.
Arnold
Bolton Sadler Williams Golbourne
Whalley Grant Docherty Campbell
Norburn Okenabirhie

Personally I think if we lose at fellow relegation strugglers Bristol Rovers next week, RW hand will be forced.
I really think it could be that soon. Time is running out and we do not look like picking up points consistently any time soon.

Pathetic line of thinking wanting Hurst back. Have you forgotten about the way he treated the club and the fans who’d paid their way down to Wembley last May? The text message bids from Ipswich for Toto and Nolan towards the end of the window? Are you really that desperate for a few wins you’re happy for the club to sell its soul in the process? A decent run of wins with hurst at the helm would feel very hollow indeed. Have some self-respect and dignity and don’t welcome the snake back with open arms. Given the tripe served up this season. Nope.

The reality probably is that it is very unlikely we will see any further change in management this season. As painful as that is, it is probably better just to give Sam Ricketts our backing and hope that he can turn things around. To his credit he has had quite a sort out of the squad. Now needs to be given time for them to settle in. It is very disappointing to see how things have gone since last season but clearly the club is now paying for all the turmoil at the end. What we need now is a period of stability and not more change uncertainty.

The narrowness of this Ricketts/Hurst debate is as dismal as our team. Why does Hurst have to be the alternative? There are other managers available if it comes to that. So let Roland and Caldwell take another roll of the Duce and come up with ? jack s**t again

Personally I think if we lose at fellow relegation strugglers Bristol Rovers next week, RW hand will be forced. And then what though? I mean we've seen one or two comments from supporters asking why the supporters aren't after Ricketts as they were with Askey, why we're not seeing calls for him to be sacked so soon and I would put that down to an air of resignation that seems to be falling about the place. By that I mean supporters (as we have seen already on this board) are starting to wonder whether this is down to those who are higher up the pecking order and aren't going to be out of the club any time soon. That whilst it might well be the manager that needs to be replaced there is absolutely no faith that those making the decision would make the right choice, that before we can get the manager right, changes elsewhere are needed. The last two appointments have really got fans scratching their heads, that we replaced Askey with Ricketts after seeing how Askey struggled... I think there is a real lack of faith that another change would improve things I think a fair bit of confidence has been lost in those who are making these decisions. When looking to the manager and a change it's starting to become "what's the point"...

When looking to the manager and a change it's starting to become "what's the point"... For me it’s more the general misery of supporting a poor team. I feel the same as I did watching the Turner/Jackson relegation team - miserable but, most of all, bored by the tedious predictability of game after underperforming game. What makes me go back is the belief that it can get better. But the day I think a new chairman and chief exec are the answer is hopefully the moment I realise it’s time I stopped watching. Second guessing the manager recruitment policy isn’t the reason I watch football.

I don't think there will be anymore sacking this season, probably the way forward if I was SR I would ask for a bit of help , with the clock running down the last thing needed right now is another managerial change, probably a wise head to guide SR through the stormy waters ahead until end of season at least, the men at the top should take some of the blame for this, plenty of wise ex managers out there !!

Can't see us making another permanent appointment until the summer. However, if things continue as they are, I can see SR being replaced by DC & ER to see out the season.
Most Town fans know a relegation season when they see one and this has all the hallmarks (conceding poor goals week in week out; random formations sometimes in one game; lack of desire/fitness; no on pitch leadership; managers who quickly run out of ideas). I don't think this squad is as bad as the one that went down out of L1 under Jackson or the one that stayed up just under Mellon but there's no shape, organisation or willpower to avoid relegation.

Only hope is if D R Can come back quick and stay fit , might organise them better, can also see D R as a possible future manager.

It’s mad that we’re still playing this diamond. It doesn’t work. Start Gilliaed and Whalley and get them running at their full backs. Absolutely. Our best 45 minutes of football under Rickets was the second half against Stoke, I think everyone would agree with that. The Saturday after he changes the team, leaves Gilliard out and changes the system. Defies belief!!!

Another thead says a senior player says they are split over Rickets. No way of knowing but it was obvious Saturday that they'd lost all fight and didn't know what the tactics were, or didn't agree.
A repeat performace at Bristol Rovers will surely bring about a change of some sort. The least disruptive would be to bring in an experienced older man as assistant to Rickets. If successful, this would offer continuity for next season.
My second option would be to remove Rickets and appoint Coyne/Ramsey with Sadler in some capacity until the end of the season.
My third option would be the most controversial but offer the nearest guarantee of success that you can get in football and that is to reappoint Hurst and Doig.
I think if RW and BC decide they can work with Hurst that would be good enough for me. The interests of the club comes first. Mistakes are made, sometimes we behave badly, sometimes people are put in very difficult positions. When the dust settles, things often seem quite so bad. Whatever the case, there's little to be gained by cutting off our nose to spite our face.
The club is in a right mess and cannot afford another poor decision. If they want Hurst then go for him. The club, the players and the fans deserve so much better than this.
