Blimey I never thought I'd ever see the day when Salop fans would be concerned about sub 5k gates. We used to dream of anything over 3500 at the old GM. There is plenty of parking within 10 -15 minutes of the ground for those fit enough. If people choose not to attend a game because of the distance involved from free parking then this says more about lifestyles which has nothing to do with the Club or the council.
You're right about lifestyles of course, but that's just it, they year is 2015 and people have a lot more to keep them entertained. It's not so much about fitness it's about apathy and unfortunately it has everything to do with the club. Basically if the club want them spending money at the ground rather than on Sky or Xbox then they've got to find a way to unlock that apathy that keeps those armchair fans away. It needs to be so attractive that they don't 'think twice' when they see a bit of rain outside. Who wants to get drenched on the 10 minute walk to the ground? Who want's to be frozen? We don't mind because we're regulars, but those people at home are happier staying where they are.
People are less active than years ago, it's so much easier to sit in the comfort of your armchair. It's no coincidence that obesity is up, heart disease rife, sign of the times I'm afraid.
People only have so much money. £20 to your teenager for the match or for a decent mobile phone contract? 2 games at the meadow or an x-box game that will last him 6 months?
So whilst you are right, the club still need to find a way to unlock it and therefore it is in their interests to do just that.

Question: is there a guide to attending the ground on the site? Something like the football league ground guide but for home fans and advertising transportation in place, how to get tickets, where to sit depending on what you want from the game (family stand etc)? Think that's a good point. I feel the perception that "the ground is hard to get to" is perhaps a little over the top, and with a bit of clear information distributed through a range of sources might encourage more to come along At the old ground I used to park in Belle Vue and walk about a mile to Gay Meadow. You can still do the same now - it's not that far and can pass a couple of pubs and chip shops on the way. Equally there are at least three bus services from the town to near the ground that's only £2 a ticket, so hardly that expensive. Having a cash turn style would help too as getting a ticket at the last minute is time consuming. The Oteley Road urban extension also offers the club a lot of opportunities to put the club at the heart of that development and make the ground more accessible and its facilities used 7 days a week. Hopefully the clubs in negotiations with the developers to get involved in that development

In my opinion the main reason for the current attendance figures is the loss of support following last season's shambles. I totally agree with you there about the loss of the attendance figures it is a shambles and the club needs to do something about it. I.E. Kids for a quid.

I was a season ticket holder for 10 years and I didn't renew for this season. I said that before we went down and I stuck to it.
I wasn't happy with the atmosphere, the prices and of course the fact that the attitude footballing wise of the club for 2 seasons in League 1 was beyond a joke both on and off the field.
I've been to 3 or 4 games this season and whilst I'm proud of the club for bouncing back the way they have as everyone points out, we could have gone completely the opposite way for all anyone on here knew. I cant speak for everyone of course but I wont consider getting a season ticket again until I see what happens in the summer. Whether we go up or not I want to see another summer of positivity and not a flash in the pan season that this could be for all anyone knows.
We already screwed up an attempt at league 1 twice in a row, I don't think I have the capacity to hand over another 350 quid to a club that didn't bother after trying so hard to go up if it happens again.
Just my reasons for not going, I'd rather stay away the whole season like i'd said than come back just because we're doing well.

I really find it strange how you think Town fans are going to start flocking back, when it is still clear to everyone that there trying to get as much as they can opt of you. I said from day one that a ground built on the outskirts will always keep away casual fans coupled with the fact that you pay MORE on the day ! Here's the facts about yesterday. 1. It's a bitter day in the middle of Feb 2. England are playing Rugby at the same time. 3. It's Wimbledon Based upon the above you would think that by now the penny would have dropped regarding promotions ? But no. It's the same old chinless wonders running the club who may have a degree or two, but clueless about the reality. If one of you have Mr Williams email address, please post it and I'll ask him about the possibility of "free coaches" for the Wycombe game and I'll see if I get a response.......

So what if we used to get 3500? We've more recently had comfortably over 5000 of our own supporters, so of course having the best home record in England and only seeing 4500 of them is a worry. Ticket price has to be the main reason, most other reasons for me are absolute garbage. Excuses. A run at the title should see them flood back. COYB.

And again, I'll re-iterate my point, the overall experience was the put off, so half a season of good football isn't going to randomly convince me the whole package has changed. If the club continue to address all the issues with the experience alongside on the pitch over time, then I'd be happy to come back. Just blindly moaning and accusing everyone that's stopped going this season is just some weird denial that our club went backwards to a certain degree on and off the pitch which actually a lot of people have echoed above.

Don't believe that ticket prices are the primary reason, nor access to the ground or atmosphere. We simply had a poor season last season, lost many regular supporters who after waiting for many years to get back to the third tier saw us drop down within two years without much of a fight. Come the last three or four home games this season if we are still top three then crowds will improve dramatically as they did a couple of years ago. In the meantime the club needs to be hitting all of the local primary schools, player visits, flyers and free tickets. Capitalise on the current situation. There is interest out there, it just needs igniting.

I think there's some wide ranging issues that just have always been there since we moved grounds and they haven't been addressed - the overgrowing uneven, poorly lit super blues way, the green gate always being shut post match, no supporters bar / lack of access to power league, car parking, dull grey concourses etc. Those issues are an irritant. People put up with those irritations when you have a successful team, get promotion.
However, when that team is effectively destroyed, the club instead bring in cheap low quality players and play dull boring football the opposite to what got us up, just about survive, then promise to learn from the mistakes and then do exactly the same the next season and get relegation, that and those irritants are going to have an affect on attendances and it's going to take a long time to win back those fans.
We have got a great record at home no doubt, but here's the thing. What is going to happen next season? If we win promotion are we going to follow the same pattern as before and do it on the cheap? We also did that under Simpson, lots of heavy spending on the likes of Holt, and suddenly everything changed and we were making free transfer signings like Ashikodi.

I didn't even use the word traitor so don't be ridiculous. You did however say you won't come back just because we're playing good football. You'd still be going now if we were in and around the league one playoffs last season I'm sure, I just can't buy into the ''it's the match day experience'' thing. We were crap on and off the field last season no argument there. But for me it's part and parcel of supporting a lower league club with a fairly small fan base. The test is going to be adapting better in League One but as we'll almost always be pottering around in these two leagues it baffles me to see only 4500 turn up to watch their table topping home town club. Especially as the CEO has already made great strides off the pitch and it may be a long long time before we see again two youth products of the class of Woods & Goldson in the starting eleven of a top Town team. Whatever yourself and the other 1000 are doing on a Saturday isn't as good as 90% of our home games so far. Trust me, come back.

The attendance should be concern but I've also noticed at the weekend the other two teams in the automatic promotion placed hardly covered themselves in glory either: Burton got under 3,000 and Wycombe just scraped over 3,000.
Be interesting to hear their fans' thoughts on what the problem is - and whether this is part of a more general pattern because of tight household budgets or just a sign of an increasingly demanding/impatient fanbase which struggles to get up for Div 2 games.

The last two seasons were a bit cruddy to say the least. To get promoted and to lose key players and replace them with ones that didn't work out was a mixture of bad luck and bad management. We seemed to go with the policy that if they were fan's player of the season then we'd sign them. Winfield and Mkandiwire had that badge of honour. Alongside that we offered a few players one year deals and they went elsewhere. I have a lot of respect for Turner and still remember Sharps saying how well he talked to players, but it just seemed to go wrong. Turner seemed to be insistent on not paying agent fees or negotiating on wages, there seemed to be only one or two irons in the fire at one time too.
With the addition of MW in the office I think things will change regarding negotiations, the way the club interacts with fans and official products available to fans. Hopefully this season will see us promoted and during the summer will see some fine tuning to the squad occur. We have most players on another years worth of contract with only Clark and Mangan that come to mind that need a deal extension.
It is a pain in the neck to get to the ground, worse than the old meadow, but it's not just getting there that's the problem as people sometimes forget it's getting away that's also annoying. We seem to have to plan transport, I pick up one or two people and try to park in Sainsbury's but always worry about the yellow perils. Yes a larger car park would be great but if they just charged people a quid or two to park in Meole retail park it'd help, plus additionally some club responsibility for Super Blues Way in terms of maintenance and possibly an exit nearer the rail tunnel would be nice!

Anyone interested in how attendances are comparable across the league I have prepared this handy table.
This is a comparison of the average for the whole of last season with the average so far this season (other than Luton and Cambridge as could not find the conference attendances last year quickly).
Portsmouth FC 15112 15461 -2% Plymouth Argyle 7363 7305 1% Oxford United 5967 5923 1% Southend United 5723 5960 -4% Shrewsbury Town 5018 5581 -11% Tranmere Rovers 4946 5113 -3% Northampton Town 4441 4548 -2% Carlisle United 4253 4243 0% AFC Wimbledon 3973 4135 -4% Wycombe Wanderers 3926 3681 6% Exeter City 3693 3701 0% Bury FC 3485 3139 10% Hartlepool United 3473 3723 -7% York City 3450 3773 -9% Newport County 3291 3453 -5% Stevenage FC 3116 2964 5% Burton Albion 3037 2700 11% Mansfield Town 3027 3385 -12% Cheltenham Town 2694 2989 -11% Dagenham & Redbridge 1940 1920 1% Morecambe FC 1939 1936 0% Accrington Stanley 1473 1606 -9%
All in all, Our fall is one of the largest in the division with our two closest fellow promotion contenders experiencing a increase in fans in the main (Burton +11% Wycombe +6%)
However across the league the picture is one of a general decrease in the average. However it must be considered that we have just gone through winter and some traditionally lower gate games and as such a lot of these could pick up in the warmer months to be near last years figures. That said we would be going some now to rival ours.

Interesting. Although difficult to compare as we were relegated and had a number of games where the visiting team brought a large number of fans. Just a thought the nearest number to the drop in fans probably equates roughly to the drop in season ticket sales. The real marker will be if we get promoted, the number of season ticket sales for next season. 12% looks a dramatic drop but need look at the facts behind it.

Yes there are lots of reasons why the figures above would need caveats, but its what it is at the moment, a direct comparison.
Looking at it Mansfield and Cheltenham must be a bit concerned though. They did not have that many fans to lose in the first place!

Hard to know what the answer is to this.
Personally I think that we are still suffering a hangover from the dismal showing of last season, combined with the cost of admittance on the day for a casual fan and the fact that it is 4th division football on view.
I noticed that my local club, Oldham Athletic had a crowd of 5,668 on Saturday.
I know that they are in a play-off place at the moment but nonetheless I was surprised that so many turned out until I found out after that the club had offered a £5 pay on the day for certain parts of the ground.
Perhaps we can do the same, have a cash only turnstile say for the south stand?
After all we have 5000 seats empty at the moment, let's see how innovative the club can be to get more bums on seats through offering a similar initiative.

It's clear that our average is 5,000 and will stay so. Almost nothing to lose know, and why not try the £5 on the day. Otherwise it's pinning our hopes on the last couple of games where we get a few more in the promotion winning games, when we all want more people in sooner. It is also difficult with games v sides who don't bring big followings. I want to get to a home game as soon as poss, but my wife works and has the car; and it's me and my 3 yr old daughter heading to the train station - which doesn't work very well from Suffolk with engineering works at the mo!! But am working on an creative way to get hold of the car for Northampton at home - who should bring a few more i would of thought. Though i then worry i may jinx the home run and head home seeing our first league defeat at home!

Last seasons home match with Wolves will have made an impact on last season average league gate. If we add the gate from the Chelsea gate and divide by 17 matches (1 exra match)the average attendance jumps from 5018 to around 5300. I think should we continue in the same form the last home game should be a sellout and the last 3 gates could well hit the plus 6 thousand mark. I do agree though that gates have been a concern due to the teams form, but not to the extent 11% currently would suggest!

Hard to be exact but the income we've lost this season due to lower attendances is probably offset by the income from the Chelsea game I would think.... easy come, easy go.

Shocking wonder how many off these hardcore fans this season will struggle to get a ticket near end of season They shouldn't though should they? After the Chelsea game we all know how the loyalty points system works and that it will be employed for big games. If you're "hardcore" you will have been attending a lot of games and will have lots of loyalty points...

Oh, forgot to say, Oldham lost 1-0. When you offer this kind of initiative not the sort of result you want if you want to encourage the casual fan to return!

£10 for Northamtpon or the game after would be a great idea. Cash turnstyle tickets for South stand too. Should also offer more tickets than usual to schools. Make an attempt to get close to filling the ground. If we get a 7k crowd, win and stay top it'll pay for itself.

At the risk of inflaming shrewders loins again, I beg to be a little more optimistic. With sky/BT paying 5.36 billion for TV rights, the cost of watching TV games at home will rise, this may bring a few back as will all the extra development in the future nearby.
Of 4992, about 4600 were home supporters, my concern is the club and row have shelled out on a virtual new
Squad, mostly on 2 yr contracts, a CEO and new manager, neither who will be cheap. Paul tisdale of Exeter reported to been 150k. I suspect 4600 attendences Is unlikely to put town in a rosy position, an 11% drop in gates is worrying and hopefully may improve as all quarters of the countyrealise what an excellent job is being done by all at the club, not forgetting our support inwales. So please let things improve and a bigger welcome fromtheclub will help. Transport, incentives and a feeling of being wanted BT the club.

No doubt about it, it is not simple to get to & from the stadium. Getting away is a pain which ever way you go. Sitting in a bus/car is frustrating, walking, is for most of the season gloomy & sometimes hazardous although the new street lighting in Otley Road is a help. Why do pedestrians & vehicles have to use the same single exit? Most of our rivals however cash strapped, seem to welcome fans with hospitality before games, such as (Cambridge Utd), super supporters club. Got to add that the announcer (not Ryan Jervis) is very difficult to understand (half time scores etc) due to mumbling/loudspeaker problem.

I to do not get this match day experiences excuse, the day is what you make it. Go with decent company and the right attitude and you can have a great day, especially now when the football is great and we win most of the time.
Isn't there buses put on from various points around the town next to plenty of parking that takes you to and from the stadium? so the "I don't want to walk ten minutes" excuse doesn't stand up.
Can someone explain the difference between a supporters bar and the powerleague to me?
The club allow people that want to goto the power league after the game to pass through the gate
I believe the club are trying i.e smoking area at half time.
I goto the match with a few mates have a few beers and a laugh and get behind my team.
The day is what you make it!
