After last night I strongly believe there is a massive importance to a singing section! Block 19 & 18 does not work mainly because the 18 lot seem intent of changing songs to sing about away fans. Last night during the first few minutes of the second half many in 19 were in a rendition of Allez Oh where a few in 18 sang you only have 1 song which followed a few heated words
I do believe if singers moved to the south stand we not only have a decent atmosphere in the south stand but it will be easier to get west & East stans involved.

The atmosphere was always better when the singers were in the south stand...

I completely agree.
The 'ultras' concept had a lot of mileage.

Agreed, was good.
Think 'Timmy Mallet' helped a lot with it.

Alex, surely there's quite an easy solution, you and your mates move to the South Stand? There's plenty of room there, not quite sure you need to wait for it to be designated a singing section?

Agree, go for it Alex. You don't need a rubber stamp from the club just up and go with anyone who wants to join in.

I've always been against the idea of moving to the South Stand as I believe not enough people would move over to make it worth while, you'd end up with the older few from block 18 staying where they are, they'd never move, and some of block 19 who seem only interested in the away fans also staying over there.
Ideally I'd love to go in the South Stand with a designated singing area because the noise is certainly more affective from behind the goal, I still believe that even if we did try it, there wouldn't be enough following for it to work, I think you'd end up with glimpses of atmosphere from the South Stand and glimpses from the people who've stayed in 18-19.

That would be a start but it would be a very long drawn out process doing it that way, some kind of help from the club and making it an official trial would surely increase the number of people willing to give it a try.

I think the fear is that without some kinda of endorsement or organisation from the club then it'll just peter out and those who might well venture to the South Stand will be heading back to the West Stand soon after. People who want to get an atmosphere going want to be in the part of the ground together with other like minded people. If only one or two move over from the South Stand then it might never be enough for others to think about going over to join them. And that would then probably see those in the South Stand heading back over to the West Stand.
Getting things organised within the fan base itself might well be difficult. I suspect the vast majority of fans don't know each other and have no way of getting in touch with anyone else who would be interested to going to the South Stand. I think that's how the club can help.
I think once you can get something organised. Get people together. And then those people know for a fact that everyone else will be in the South Stand to make a noise then it'll happen. This isn't going to happen otherwise for me. People don't want to head into the South Stand and find just a handful of fans looking to make a noise. As the nest game they'll just head back to the West Stand...
Thats how I see it anyhows...

Didn't this get tried before and fail. Can't see it ever rally happening unless the club make a certain section of the ground the designated area and the fans go there.

Could always bring back terracing - no need for "sectioning" then

Sort of proves the point that it cant be heard... I did hear it (just) below the stands at half time, looked like all were having fun...
I know I've mentioned before that it cant be heard and I'm not criticising the drummer in fact can suggest a collection for a decent drum and chip in with a tenner ....

Heard the drum in block 2 but it wasn't very loud. Nothing to do with the drummer just the wonderful atmosphere. Even block 2 reverberated when the equaliser went in!!!!!!!!!!!!

A better mix between the old standards and stuff like MM's barmy army, allez-oh etc would be my wish. The latter two keep the noise going but tend to be at the expense of other songs and it becomes a bit samey. The terrace was always a lot more democratic - anyone and everyone could and would start a song and it would either be picked up or left to die. Now it has got to the stage where the people at the back of 18 / 19 have somehow become 'king-makers' where singing is concerned.

Perhaps the day will one day come when the stadium will be full more regularly but don't hold your breath! in the meantime, just keep on drumming!!!!!

Agreed, was good. Think 'Timmy Mallet' helped a lot with it. He certainly didn't help on Tuesday! I applaud Timmy Mallet for his enthusiasm and attempts at getting the South Stand to participate in whatever song he is singing. However, there is a voice in my head constantly telling me that he is doing it purely to get attention. The voice in my head reminded me of this witnessing him running up and down in front of the seating area on Tuesday. The voice in my head told me 'he knows the game is on the television and he wants to be noticed/commented on by the commentators. He also seems to enjoy having what appears to be 'debates' with security/stewards - possibly another 'getting attention' tactic. As I mention though, I applaud his efforts and when you consider that some supporters can't even be bothered to stand up and applaud a goal we score then I'd rather a stadium full of Mallets rather than 'corpses'.

Having tried several different blocks when we first started coming to the Meadow, my kids and I watch from Block 18 because they prefer the atmosphere there with the chanting etc (I know some of the language is not day to day stuff for them, but they understand that they do not join in with the swearing).
At Burnden and the Reebok I always watched from behind the goal as again the singing and atmosphere is better IMO than on the side stands.
If there was concerted effort to group all of the singers together it is highly likely that we would follow as it is what the kids enjoy - and it makes sense to have one group making loads of noise rather than a few clusters making bits of noise!
Only ever went to the Gay Meadow once (vs Arsenal when visiting friends) as wasn't living down here at the time - but I do recall plenty of noise from The Riversiders!
Is Alex the guy who plays the drum? Should Socrates be worried about all the voices in his head?

Now it has got to the stage where the people at the back of 18 / 19 have somehow become 'king-makers' where singing is concerned. This. I haven't got a season ticket this season based on the last 2 years but had a season ticket in 18 since the ground opened and to be honest I've noticed some people just giving up trying to join in with chanting because it's so samey. It might help if some of our lot didn't just repeat the exact chant the away fans are doing to us because you just cancel out both sets of fans after about 20 seconds and it goes silent. In fairness I think this is something that the club needed to have helped with when we moved from the Gay meadow and not several years down the road when the atmosphere has largely died other than occasions such as Tuesday.

To be honest I think he just can't help himself!!!! He just has to talk and be the centre of attention but to be fair he can also be a very kind and generous. On a side note, look at the picture of John Terry in the programme - remind you of anyone?!

What I think needs to be done:
Get the SP involved Eventually make a South Stand block a singers block
As well as 19 may have sounded on Tuesday, yet again the away fans just went straight over you from the South Stand when they bothered to sing. Behind the goal is always the best way. Would love singers to move, as a current South Stander

Have to agree with Valerioch there, on Tuesday the Chelsea fans sounded louder from the South Stand. On Saturday my mate sat next to me, a fellow season ticket holder, that after listening to the Portsmouth fans we should get a drum back. I told him that there was one in Block 19, but he couldn't hear it.
This isn't meant as a criticism of anyone, just that the sound doesn't travel around the ground well from Block 19. A friend of mine who is by no means a regular at the ground his lad to the game on Tuesday and sat in Block 19 (near the front). He said he was glad that he was over there as "it was absolutely bouncing". Although he wasn't singing he said it was an amazing atmosphere and next time he goes to a Shrewsbury game that's where he'd choose to sit (or stand!)
