Typical of Joan to say thank you she has always been a real brick in their family. Why don't the Club arrange a pre-season game with Hull, Middlesbrough, Millwall or even Walsall with all the proceeds going to the cause. Many players have suffered with this problem in later life, currently Jimmy McLaughlin and not that long ago Malcolm Musgrove were hit by the vagaries of the disease. Malcolm like Cliff Lloyd was a former PFA Chairman but neither received assistance from Graham Taylor - at least that is what Jean Musgrave told me -scandalous. Do you mean Gordon Taylor? I'm very sad to hear that Jim McLaughlin is also ill, a hero to me and one of the nicest men I've ever met.

Just to throw this in the mix, instead of having fancy dress for the last home game, about a "wear a flower for Alfie" day to highlight the condition of dementia? I believe when he was well, Alfie had a good sense of humour, so he would find outrageously ridiculous flowers very funny. Seems easy enough to organise. Get the local media, papers, radio and tele to give it some publicity. Lenny the Lion would be a good person to front it up. Make sure we advertise the bank details where people can make a donation.
Is that an idea?

Is that an idea? I like this idea. I'm coming down for this critical game but what flower to wear? An Iris to symbolise hope or perhaps a Cypress which is associated with despair...

BT sport sport emailed yesterday ...Baker and Kelly show to be precise. I think the target should be raised to £10 per game. If supporters are buying into this the why not be ambitious ?

Brilliant effort everyone, nearly hit the original target in 48hrs, we're on £452 at the moment with £20 promised offline which I'll add tomorrow.
Happy to raise the bar to whatever people think, but I'd rather keep it realistic than promise the world and fall miles short. Let me now what you think.

Some light amongst the shade round here for sure. For me the targets aren't really important. It's so difficult to second guess how much more we can raise. We'll beat the original target set and that is certainly something to be proud of. So good to have something positive and productive on here despite the difficulties surrounding our club just now.

Thanks Mark, I agree it's great to have some positive news. Perhaps the squad should be finding £100 for every game we fail to score...
We're now just £14 off the original target, who's going to get us over the line?! It would be great to make it in the next hour or so, I'll then up the target and we can get it out on twitter and in the media that we've done it already but are increasing the aim.

One more quick question, does anyone have decent contacts within Shrewsbury's main commercial sponsors (e.g. Greenhous, Salop Leisure, Pro-vision). It would be great if we could get them involved as they may have deeper pockets! Please PM me or use the giving website blurb to contact them yourselves. Thanks.

As we've already passed the original target how about upping the target to £605 for 488 (games played) + 117 (goals scored). Once we smash that milestone we can look at going for maybe £5 per game. Anything more than that would be a push unless we can get a lot more coverage; BBC Midlands, Central TV, the Football League, the FA and even maybe the club itself

Well done to everyone who have donated and exceeded the original target .
Have the Club indicated that they have or will be donating ? Maybe the net proceeds (or a substantial part 25% ?) from Saturdays 50 : 50 draw would encourage fans to buy a ticket who normally don't and make a significant contribution to the fund . Just a thought.

I might be being thick but what's gift aid? Something to do with tax I think - waiving your rights to tax deductions and the government paying gift aid to the charity instead. I may be wrong.

I might be being thick but what's gift aid? Something to do with tax I think - waiving your rights to tax deductions and the government paying gift aid to the charity instead. I may be wrong. Gift Aid is a UK government scheme which aims to encourage people to donate to good causes. Charities can register for Gift Aid and can then claim additional money from donations from UK tax payers who confirm they qualify. The charity applies to HMRC for the money, and the amount of rebate is based on the income tax that would have been paid on the donation. For example if you donate £10 the Gift Aid claim would be £2.50 on the basis that a standard rate tax payer would have to have earned £12.50 less tax (20% = £2.50) to make the donation. Always tick the box for Gift Aid (assuming you are a tax payer) as it costs you nothing and the charity gets an extra 25%. Google is your friend.

Hi All Right we're up and running with the Alf Wood fundraiser, see the Virgin Giving page below, now get giving! Hope you're all happy with this being in blue and amber's name! uk.virginmoneygiving.com/alfwoodthanks Please publicise this anyway you can (can this be pinned?), if you need some blurb this is what i've written: In March of this year it was publically revealed by his family that Shrewsbury Town legend Alf Wood is suffering from dementia. Alf also played for Man City, Millwall, Hull City, Middlesborough, Walsall and Stafford Rangers making 488 professional appearances and scoring 117 goals.
As a show of thanks to Alf for the great footballing moments he gave to so many and in recognition of the amazing efforts of those caring for dementia suffers we are trying to raise £488 for Dementia UK - a pound for every game he played. We urge fans of all of Alf's former clubs (and anyone else!) to dig deep for a great cause.
Dementia UK is a national charity committed to improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia www.dementiauk.org
All the best Alf!Cheers Blue and amber (Shrewsbury fans) A wonderful idea - just popped a few quid in myself.

Right, I've doubled the target. We've got £636 so far and we're aiming for £976. If there is anyone who planned to give but hasn't got round to it please do, but I suspect we need to increase the promotion and reach to new folk in order to get another £350. Any bright ideas?
Possibles include one or all of: 1) Approaching local businesses directly (especially the clubs sponsors) 2) the flower for Alf idea 3) A bucket collection at a home match (we'd need to sort permission from the club)
ideas and volunteers to get going with these would be really appreciated, I'm away with work for the rest of the week so won't get to do much.
Thanks to everyone for your generosity and enthusiasm so far.

Many thanks, Shropshire Star, very grateful for your kindness, although you might need to do a name check on Alfie's Wife's name.
