So he was in Pakistan in a city well known for its military establishments, living in a distinctive building (Wikipedia and BBC News refer). Who are you friends and who are your enemies?

Within a mile of their version of Sandhurst, in a zone with checkpoints to get into.

There's no denying that he was an evil monster.
However, he has been summarily executed without trial. Whilst it is possible he would have fought to the death, it doesn't mean that he needed to be killed there and then. No civilian casualties... leads me to believe that he could have been extracted alive, and plenty of intelligence gathered from him pending a trial.
He is now a martyr to al-Qaida's cause.
Unfortunately, there will be repercussions, as well as accusations of the USA (especially those celebrating at Ground Zero) being as fanatical and crazy as some proven terrorists. Will only feed propaganda for middle eastern extremists, and add fuel to their fires.
All this dick waving saying how great a day it is.... seems to me it hasn't been thought through as well as it may have been.

All this dick waving saying how great a day it is.... seems to me it hasn't been thought through as well as it may have been. I'm sure the Jihadists were thinking the same following Sept 11th. I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, and this whole Obama press release sits badly with me. Facing a slump in the polls; US economy on the slide; Dollar weakening. Coupled with: A lightly armed SF op conducted hundreds of miles inside the territory of another country; Only 3 guards protecting Bin Laden's compound; A 40 minutes firefight where no Pakistani forces, be they military or police, were mobilised or responded. And the body has been 'buried at sea'. It just doesn't add up...yet.

I think it makes perfect sense that he only had three guards, the chap was in hiding. It would not surprise me at all that the local Pakistani army or police did not get involved. I suspect they did not wish to have his blood on their hands as it may not have gone down too well with some within the country. He will be mourned by some there. Plus I suspect the Americans were more than happy to claim all the glory. Body buried at sea. Not sure. Maybe. But they took a fair bit of flack for showing Saddam’s body, I didn’t think the Americans wanted to but it came about anyhow. And it means of course that there is nowhere that could be seen as some site that could be a gathering or focal point for him after his death. They wouldn't owt like that... So it all sounds plausable to me. Whether its true, mind...

Buried at sea is a great idea because at Stutty says, you don't have the hassle of a grave, no-one can ever retrieve the body, and you have not desecrated the body within the islamic way of dealing with it, so it ticks all boxes.

No doubt many handwringers will again come out of the woodwork, and the Legal Machine will ensure that as his human rights were breached his family are entitled to millions of British taxpayers money --- even though it was an American "hit"

Neither of these would allow themseleves to be captured. Better to kills themseleves. This makes it near impossible to capture them.

Yes Hitler would have had a trial - then they would have executed him.
Bin Laden deserved to die, the 1,000's that died in 9/11 didn't, so this was a job well done.
Now lets get get on with our lives until the next extremist wack job terrorist organisation decides the English speaking world has offended their beliefs or way of life.

How anyone can come to that conclusion is beyond me. Where have you been for the last eight years?!?

Yes, the end-of-level baddie has finally been defeated and we can all waltz off merrily into the sunset until the next baddie rears his head. It's the Hollywood reading of international relations, we're the goodies and everything we do is justified cos, after all, we're the good guys. Bin Laden was a mass murdering scum bag and if he really is dead, then may he rot in hell. But the USA and the UK have bombed and occupied two countries over the last ten years. To millions of people,we're not the good guys...I expect plenty of wannabe Bin Laden's are ready to take his place.

I too am waiting for an official photo to be submitted to the media before I'm convinced however it is a good day for the West and America. That said Americans seem to be baiting a reaction from Osama's supporters with the gatherings at Ground Zero and the Whitehouse. It's going to get messy for a few days but the world's a better and safer place without him. Better yes, safer let's wait and see.

Well if he isn’t dead I’m sure he’ll be appearing in some video sometime soon to make sure everyone knows he’s still about. He wouldn’t miss a trick like that if it was available to him. The yanks have killed tens of thousands over that way in pursuit of Bin Laden anyhow, they were bound to have caught up with him at some point. The law of averages would have seen to that. They probably killed him some time ago...
All those innocent men, women and children killed throughout the last eight years in search for one man; so the yanks could gain some revenge. A revenge which in the great scheme of things means pretty much jack s**t.
Well at least they got their man eh? But at what price. Rum.

What if...... he wasn't dead, but the Americans had exfiltrated him alive, but unconscious, made him up to look like he'd been shot, took some photos, took some DNA, then took him to a safe place back in the good old US of A. They now have him to gain useful intelligence from (without torture, of course).
If members of extremist organisations knew that he was alive, but captured, there would be hostages taken, planes hijacked etc, with demands for his release.
It's easier for them to say that he had been slotted, and that they have given him a burial at sea.
When they have all the info they can get, they just kill him anyway. Won't make any difference, everyone thinks he's dead already.
Nah..... couldn't be true, could it?

In other news the US are now saying he was unarmed. He was shot in the head for "resisting" but he had no weapon with which to resist. Hmmm.

Great, hopefully he had his hands up and was begging for mercy but they shot him anyway. ****er didn't deserve a quick death, wish they had waterboarded him for a few hours.
Those in the twin towers and on london tube trains were unarmed too!

The Pakistanis said they passed on information about the compound in 2009. Next news: someone at the Pentagon finds the email.

I don't usually approve of summary executions, but sometimes an exception has to be made... It's pretty hard to imagine Bin Laden on trial in the Hague, or New York(?). I'm with the pragmatists on this one.
