I genuinely fail to see how the most significant sporting event on earth can be "overhyped"?
If you don't want an England sunlounger cushion or ice box tray then don't buy one.
Companies "cashing in" are generally responding to demand, rather than creating it.
If you don't like there being so many games then just watch the ones you are interested in, just like I don't tend to watch many, many Olympic events.

So who off here was invited to Heavenlys and Jonahs wedding? I guess Heavenly wears the trousers as Jonah just follows him. Such a whirlwind romance as well I met Heavenley for the first time on Saturday night at the bowls and now we are getting married 'By the way it is a shame that you need to delete half of a quote to justify your position but maybe that shouldn't surprise me.' Edited to highlight the contradiction Ed? The point is you are wrong end of Roll on 2018 and our successful bid eh Ed Anyway thats my last comment on this thread other than its going to be a great World Cup and just maybe England will perform

Going back to the original post. Yes the WC is hyped, maybe even over hyped, but this is mainly by people like Curry's, Pringles, Gillette etc., the majority of people know it's about to start and don't really need every advert to remind them. Most of us on here have in Joe Hart more reasons to be interested in the WC, especially the England games (will he start, will Green make a cock up, will James be fit enough?) than most other lower league team supporters, but the majority of fans of all clubs will be switching on on Saturday evening.
As for the CL and EL, I agree wholeheartedly. When Liverpool, Villa and Forest won the European Cup it was a competition for real champions, not a third runners-up competition. I much preferred it when we had the European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup, but with the expansion of the CL to take 2nd, 3rd and even 4th placed teams, the CWC was usually fought out by domestic cup runners up as the winners had usually qualified for the CL (as sometimes the runners up had as well) and they would always go for the more prestigious (richer) competition.
As an aside I was talking to a mate at work a few weeks ago and we discussed the Anglo-Italian Cup. We agreed that it would be good if the winner of the JPT and the equivalent comps in Europe could be entered into a European lower league competition the following season, with the winner of that gaining access to the group stages of the EL and the runner-up entering the qualifying rounds. We wondered whether the clubs would be more interested in the JPT if it could get them a sniff of European football. I know that I'd be interested in going to watch Salop in Europe, even if it was against third tier Latvians and Greeks. It would make up for the times I've been to Darlington, Halifax or Orient.

Am I alone in getting fed up with the World Cup and it hasn't even started. It has become a major commercial undertaking which is more to do with making money than about football. Why can't it be a straight knockout cometition? Why do they need to have two rounds of mini leagues? Its all about making money just like the Champions League an association to make the big clubs richer that will ultimately destroy football. What are Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs champions of nothing, the Champions league should return to being the European Cup with only the champions of each national league qualifying. Surely that would make the national leagues more competitive. Television is strangling football in England the sooner the clubs break that stranglehold the better for the game. Rant Over. Top Post . Most of the blame lies with Sepp Blatter and Mr. Murdoch . Neither of them has footballs interests at heart just Money !! football will be better off with their demise .

Thats one of most dreadful statements ive ever heard, athletics and football compared is just dire. The World Cup is the biggest event in any sporting category that's ever existed, fact.
