I am sure SA are not moaning about the major commercial undertaking either but looking forward to enjoying the huge return. Jonah I'm sure the South African's who have been made hopeless to make way for a new stadium, or because their home were destroyed so that visitors to Cape Town don't see shanty towns are moaning as they were 2 years ago when I was there. I would have thought someone as intelligent as you would know the difference between moaning an expressing an opinion. The World Cup isn't important enough to moan about. Venceremos wouldn't the France v Uruguay match be much more interesting if at the end of the game one of the teams was eliminated from the competition. I think the group stages offer plenty of interest, plenty of entertainment. Its only four teams, three games, there is not much room for failure.

Isnt a rant a bloody good moan then Ed. Definition of Rant: A speech or piece of writing that incites anger. Well it achieved that in some people. I take it you have no view on those South African's made homeless so you can watch "The greatest football occasion in the world" Jonah.

Martin what planet are you on, you seem to live in your own little world, wasn't it Jonah who stated that the South Africans wont be moaning.
When you have spoken to the people who live in the most appaling conditions just outside Cape Town I will treat your comments with respect.

Anyone who can't get excited about the World Cup isn't a proper football fan. Football is about a lot more than the world cup, there are many people across the world who enjoy kicking a ball about but have far more important things to worry about than nearly 1500 mainly over priced men kicking a ball about in South Africa. How many of the 64 games will turn out to be memorable I'd be surprised if its half a dozen. I'd suggest you are a fan of the World Cup which is not the same as a fan of football.

I have no idea how this has affected the homeless but looking at the positives which on this occasion is the jobs etc this event has brought to SA it can surely do nothing but benefit some of the people you refer too. No Shanty Towns demolished in Cape Town as far as I am aware because the new stadium was built on the site of the old one but I might be wrong. As a football fan I will enjoy the World Cup Please let me know how you will spend the next month. Are your concerns about the homeless strong enough for you to boycott the event or is it just a smoke screen because you (as Heavenley articulately put it) have made an of yourself.

So Ed the 1.2 billion people that will watch the world cup are not football fans? Martin at no point in time did I suggest that any of the 1.2 billion people that will watch the world cup are not football fans. What I said was that many football fans around the world will not watch the world cup for a multitude of reason. Jonah, if you read what I wrote you will see that I was referring to Shanty Towns along the route into Cape Town from the airport which have been destroyed. As a matter of fact I do have more important things to do over the next month which will result in me seeing very little of the football. I always considered you to be your own man now I see you just want to jump on Heavenly's little england bandwagon with flags on it.

Venceremos wouldn't the France v Uruguay match be much more interesting if at the end of the game one of the teams was eliminated from the competition. It probably would but that'll come when the group stages end. There's still the chance of a good game, some controversy, an upset etc. Take any club game in England, or in European competition, and we'd know what to expect. We might be surprised but we'd have an expectation and, chances are, we won't be too far wrong. The World Cup is different. What will happen when Ivory Coast play Portugal, or Uruguay play France or even Honduras play Switzerland? We really don't know because these teams will never meet competitively outside a World Cup. So, regardless of whether I know some of the players, it's something new and different. Yes I'm also tired of football's excesses and FIFA and the marketing hype but I can suspend that for the tournament itself. I have permission to be a little boy again. A shame if you can't share that. Of course I sympathise with anyone whose lives have been disrupted or made worse but there's another side to that, which is the economic boost that South Africa will certainly gain. If you think it's all cost and no benefit, look at a list (as I did today) of Midlands businesses that have already benefitted from contracts for work associated with the London Olympics. How much employment has that generated/protected? What does that income do for the wider local economy? How much is still to come? Something similar will have happened in South Africa. No, everyone won't benefit immediately and directly, but a great many will and surely that's better than that nobody does?

I agree with you that many will benefit in South Africa from the World Cup but unfortunately the ones who tend to lose out are the ones with the least. Of course there can be good games at all stages of the competition. My main gripe is that FIFA has allowed television to take a stranglehold on football which has resulted in televised football reaching saturation point. We used to have a football free period from May till August that is rapidly disappearing. The Town pre-season games starts just a week after the World Cup final. 22 months of continual football is in my opinion just too much I want a break. I want time to enjoy other sports and the summer whatever that may bring. I wont give up STFC so I'll give the World Cup a miss. If that means in some people eyes i'm not a true footballing fan so be it.

Ed, whilst I agree that there probably is an over saturation of football generally, no one is forcing you to watch it.
The over-saturation of football is generally on dedicated sporting channels, not your every day terristrial channels so I dont think you can complain too much. If you want to watch another sport or take a break from football during the summer months then do it.
However the world cup is every 4 years and as far as Im aware has been for some time, so not sure what the problem is really

Serious question Ed. Do you enjoy football or anything about it? Your constant negativity tells me the answer is no Well you see for 60 years I'd been watching and playing football and I really enjoyed it and then 12 months ago I went to the ProStar stadium and someone told me that what 11 men in blue and amber were doing was really football and I hated it so I now have what is commonly known as footballphobia. Hopefully when the Messiah returns my memory of the last 12 months will be erased and I will be able to enjoy the game again. By the way it is a shame that you need to delete half of a quote to justify your position but maybe that shouldn't surprise me.

If that means in some people eyes i'm not a true footballing fan so be it. Certainly not in my eyes. I fully understand that point of view and it's one of the reasons I continue to avoid a Sky subscription (apart from a healthy aversion to the Murdoch empire of course). Terrestrial TV provides enough for me, that way I keep fresh for watching Shrewsbury and can still enjoy the big international tournaments ..... and the summer.

Martin, though Ed's constantly negative outlook over the past two years truly does my head in, and though he sometimes mistates facts or states his supositions and opinions as if fact, there really is no need for you to resort to abuse and bating. He has a right to his opinions, as we all do, and he at least encourages lively, intelligent debate on the board (I think perhaps he enjoys being a bit of a devil's advocate). Let's not make it childish and personal - you have been better than that recently.
