Being a massive music fan and young(ish) I've long resigned myself to being too young to have seen some of the bands/artists that I would have wanted to see live (Beatles, Otis Redding, The Clash, Hendrix, Thin Lizzy, Bob Marley, the list goes on).
However, in the last few months I've been fortunate enough to see 2 groups that I never thought I would see live, and the shows were great.
The first was Dexy's Midnight Runners at the Civic in October, which was a typically charismatic performance by Kevin Rowland, and was absolutely fantastic. The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the finale of "This is what she's like" from the sadly over-looked "Don't stand me down" album from 1985. The album itself may be a bit of an acquired taste for those who only know Dexy's for "Come on Eileen" but this track is well worth a listen.
The second were 2 shows by the legend that is Arthur Lee and Love. A brilliant songwriter and vocalist but one of the best known "acid casualties" from the late 60's, with a long history of drug, mental health and gun issues ! However, he turned in great performances in both shows and it was a real treat to see the whole of "Forever Changes" performed live, one of the greatest albums of all time without question.
Has anyone else been lucky enough to have similar experiences of seeing bands re-form as a total surprise? (Madness don't count due to their regular "reunions", which I've managed to catch twice !).

Never done Reading/Leeds but I'm off to my 5th straight V Festival this year, Strokes confirmed to perform and more to be announced tomorrow I've already seen my fave band The Libertines in concert this year. But reading the original post, I would have loved to see Ottis Redding live as well...

never thought i'd see grandmaster flash and then he went and played wrexham, and was amazing.
would like to have seen the beatles (but they stopped touring when they got interesting), also would like to see daf and caberet voltaire.
saw suicide after they reformed and that was a treat.

I was a big fan of The Specials but can not remember them coming to town in their heyday . Although i did see Pauline black's version of the group at the Jazz club at The Buttermarket a couple of years ago. Can anyone remember seeing The Clash at Tiffany's in the late 70's early 80's.

Jamo, the specials played Shrewsbury loads of times, mainly at the music hall, but their first few gigs were at the Morris Hall. could only fit about 40 people in there, as I remember.
The Clash have never played in Shrewsbury, I saw them in Birmingham and Stoke (Hanley) as these were the nearest gigs during the early years, and they certainly never played there after....
Are you getting cofused with The Jam, or Stranglers, or boomtown rats........

i'm sure i saw The Clash in town although it may have been The Stranglers now you mention them, although i was never a big fan of them. Trouble is i was off my cake in those day's so the memories a bit faded.

Can't believe bands like Dexys Midnight Runners, The Clash and The Strangers (and Travis more recently, I was actually at that one) have played in Shrewsbury, superb stuff!! Nowadays they consider attracting some U2 remix band to play in town as a major coup

Iggy Pop was class when I saw him, but I keep hearing the rumours about the Asheton brothers playing with him again for a proper Stooges gig - that would definately be worth seeing. Mind you, even if they don't get it together, Iggy will still be playing when he's 101. I also had the privilege of seeing INXS live, now theres one band who wont be coming back One more, I discovered The Smiths too late so only saw the Mozmeister on his own, would love to see them back but its not gonna happen................

Shrewforever................................................................................................................................................. I only heard of Paul Rogers when I watched Jools Holland on new years eve just gone. I must admit to being blown away by his talent and dug a bit deeper to find he was the voice of Free! Is his solo stuff worth purchasing?

I think my old man and mum saw the Who in Wem many years ago when they were dating. I've also seen Iggy Pop live, it was at Reading afew years ago left a King Adora set pretty early on basically for obvisious reasons, and in trying to see what was on at the time stumbled on Iggy Pops gig on the main stage, for someone in is 50's he could probably give someone alot younger than him a run for his money in terms of energy. Someone was asking about Reading festival the prices for water, food etc are basically extortion, only go to the toilet when your desprate oh and on the last day a gas mask may be handy. Cant really tell u anything about Camping stayed at a freinds house(Living in Shropshire you get sick of the sight of fields, you've seen one field you've seen them all) so i stayed in pampered luxury . One thing i remember about the campsite is its probably easy to get lost and the strange aroma in the air(Bought back memories of being 15 and smoking things i shouldnt and now no longer do). Im talking useless drivel probably but overall Reading is a good experience if your looking for something opposite to Glastonbury

I'm sure the clash never made Salop. Buzzcocks came twice and I missed them both times. I'm going to see Desmond Dekker on Friday at Stroud Subscription Rooms!

Saw Rory Gallagher and Bob Marley before their premature deaths. Saw UB40 at the Music Hall, and for pure nostalgia, the Rolling Stones a couple of years ago. The wedding present my wife and I cherish were tickets to see Elvis Costello . Recent events I didn't buy tickets for (because of expense) Neil Young and David Bowie, and thinking I perhaps should have . I'd love to have been in a small club, with a good drink, listening to Nick Drake.

I also saw Dexys on their last tour, in Manchester. Not really a reformation as there aren't that many original members left, but it was a good gig. Although they did do a tedious extended policeman skit.
Didn't see Arthur Lee this time round but saw him on his tour before he got sent down (1992ish), backed by Shack.
Saw Wire a couple of years ago- thay were very good. And the Buzzcocks several times. And a couple of months ago the Dead Kennedys, tho' without Jello, so I'm not sure if they really count...

Dylan at Glastonbury
and REM at the MEN
were two gigs I'm glad I didn't miss.
Seen most of the bands that meant lots to me round 95/96 (Blur, Oasis, Suede, Pulp, Super Furries etc.) but always gutted that I missed out on the Stone Roses live.

You didn't miss much with the Roses to be honest. They were never really a live band. I saw them when they were still goths- they sucked.
The Mondays, on the other hand, were one hell of a live band in their time.

I saw REM at MEN also saw them at the old Cardiff Arms Park.....Awesome. Anyone remember Bad Manners, bit of a skin head in my hayday, saw them at Birm odeon, wicked, loads of scrapping with the bouncers.

Ooo, they wouldn't like you calling them goths.
They were a totally different band then to be honest, although I do like a couple of songs they were playing around that time, even if it was basically sub standard Joy Division stuff.
Don't think anyone would ever stand up for them being a fantastic live act in 1989/90 but the live events themselves must have been awesome.
