A change to the umpires in the Ashes following some really poor performances so far. Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney have been replaced for the fourth test by South African Marais Erasmus and Sri Lankan Ruchira Palliyaguruge. Wilson and Gaffaney have been removed from the remaining two tests. After all the 'boobies' by umpires during the series so far it might have been better to use Aussie and English umpires. 1 Aussie and 1 English for each game !! Having said that, apart from these games i have always thought Aleem Dar to be quite a good umpire. Maybe his eyes have gone !!

Bringing Jimmy back, if he's fit, is a no brainer but it would give us a long tail. Agree with you there, but how can they determine if he is 'really fit' ?? He has played in a few games during the past year where he was deemed to be fit and then broken down for some reason. Difficult decision methinks !

I agree about Aleem Dar, his performances have been very uncharacteristically bad. Whereas Joel Wilson has never looked quite up to the required standard to me.

Sadly Jimmy Anderson has been ruled out of the final 2 test matches. I wonder if we will see him again in international cricket?

It's easy to be clever after the event. Anderson had been bowling for lengthy spells in the nets every day since before the Ireland game. There were no indications that he wasn't fit and a player of his experience wouldn't have declared himself fit if he wasn't sure in himself that he was, it's just one of those things. You can bowl as many overs as you want in the nets, the strain is not the same as a match situation for somebody like Anderson, he should have played at least one competitive game before being considered , and England fans will have to get used to the fact that at 37 that could well be his swansong in Test Cricket?, he can't go on forever.I claim my mystery prize.

Overton in for Woakes.

Strange decision. Root says it's because Overton, being a tall bowler, will be able to exploit extra bounce in the Old Trafford pitch. We already have bowlers who can exploit any extra bounce in the pitch, particularly Broad and Archer, but if it swings we have left out out best exponent of that skill. I hope Overton has found a yard of pace since the last Ashes series when his bowling was little more than medium pace.

Some overcast/damp days forecast over the course of the test match, I hope the selectors don't regret this decision.

England team as per announced yesterday, Denly to open, Roy at four, Overton in for Woakes.
For Australia Starc replaces Siddle and Smith replaces Khawaja.
Sudden death cricket for England now.

7 overs - WICKET
Harris lbw b Broad 13 (Aus 28-2)
Just! It's out by a whisker. It was umpire's call on height with the ball flicking the bails. That means the original decision stands.

Downside of those 2 early wickets is we've now got to get Smith and Labuschagne out now!

39.2 overs - WICKET Labuschagne b Overton 67 (Aus 144-3) Oh! A wicket!
That is an absolute peach from Craig Overton! He tempts Marnus Labuschagne forward and the ball seems to slide past the outside edge of the bat and just, casually, flicks the bail off. Labuschagne looks gutted as he trudges off.
One down now for Smith!

Too cold to watch cricket in the evenings in September. Anyone watch the T20 match between Lancs and Essex at Chester le Street last night? The small crowd were wrapped up in blankets as were all the commentators. And thanks to the ECB's scheduling of the Test Matches, Lancs were forced to play what should have been a home evening game 137 miles away from Old Trafford, with unsurprisingly very few supporters able to make the trip. Because Sky required the match to be played in the evening, all of Lancashire's out grounds were deemed to be unsuitable. Lancs lost, even though they'd topped the Northern Group. www.espncricinfo.com/series/8053/report/1167253/lancashire-vs-essex-1st-quarter-final-vitality-blast

48.4 overs - WICKET Head lbw Broad 19 (Aus 183-4) You know this is out because Stuart Broad hasn't bothered to appeal!
Oh, this looks plumb, and a horrible innings by Travis Head is brought to an end. He played all around his pads, got smacked on the knee, and I reckon that was thwacking into leg stump. He has a brief tete-a-tete with Steve Smith about the review before trooping off.
----
Will likely rue that c&b chance Archer didn't take to get Smith on 65!

What an incredible player Steve Smith is....IF only we had one of our own!
From the BBC cricket:
Steve Smith's last 12 innings against England: 143, 141*, 40, 6, 239, 76, 102*, 83, 144, 142, 92, 101*.

101.1 overs - WICKET Paine c Bairstow b Overton 58 (Aus 369-6) Gone! First ball after tea! A 74mph dobbler has done for Tim Paine. He pushes forward, gets the thinnest of edges, and Paine walks before the umpire has raised his finger. He knew. So, still just one first-class century for Paine...
