Nervy chase so far. I’m still fancying England, but it won’t be easy. Maybe not....

Two defeats from 6 and the strongest teams - India, Australia and NZ still to play - England not looking like a good bet to qualify for the semis. Big let down.

Poor from several England batsmen....but well played Sri Lanka....who posted a decent total in the conditions and defended it with their lives.
So...England may survive if they beat one of the big 3....

England can’t do it on a tough pitch. Kohli, Williamson and Smith would get their sides over the line. Root is good, but flat pitches and when he gets runs he’s dropped two or three times.
Butler shows up once in 6 or 7 games, same with Stokes. Unfortunately they can’t get over the line against a rubbish Sri Lanka side with a fat Malinga who barely gets to the crease these days.
As negative as I am though - all these people talk about England not qualifying. Christ - they have a chance to beat the three strongest sides - they should thrive on that. Thought they really missed Plunkett actually, they don’t need Woakes to bowl 5 overs first up then never bowl again, that’s why Willey was dropped. Wood can bowl at front.
Also, Vince is s**t.

I don't often disagree with your cricket posts but I think Sri Lanka deserve credit for defending a small total. Whatever you think of Malinga, he was far too good for our front line batsmen. I do agree about Vince though, hopefully Jason Roy will be back soon.

The forgotten man Curran might be deserving of a game too, which would also improve the lower middle order.
He could be given a game instead of Woakes.

Too many soft dismissals yesterday leaving England now up against it in terms of semi-final qualification.
It's a shame that some of the others couldn't show the same level of maturity, application and shot selection as Ben Stokes did, it only needed one person to stay with him and England would have won fairly comfortably.

Mmmmm meanwhile down at Southampton Kohli goes for 67, India 135-4 (30.2 overs)
42 overs gone India only 179-4 with Dhoni and Jadhav at crease both on 23 off 42/43 balls
Dhoni stumped India 192-5 44.3 overs. Seemed to be struggling to get going 28 off 52 balls. Afghanistan some great death bowling, India being restrict to 1-2 runs in couple of overs.
Mujeeb 10.0 0 26 1 2.60
47th over - 1 run (wide)
2 wickets in final over restricts India 224-8

All now depends on whether the Indian bowlers can use the pitch as the Afghans did. Looks like difficult for batting. Similar to yesterday at Headingley. It'll be interesting to see if the pitches continue to get more difficult, it happened to a certain extent with the Champions Trophy in England a couple of years ago so it wouldn't surprise me if this is something the ICC like to see.

Top knocks today from some top players and the top teams getting the job done from less than ideal situations on less than ideal pitches. But hey - adapting and conditions and all that, over rated right?

Sir Geoff spot on as usual. The top teams are able to adapt to the conditions, we need to do likewise.

I can't agree, Boycott's comments, as are often the case lack any balance. He is out of touch with the modern game, particularly the shorter forms of the game, and it's sad to see him ridiculed by many modern commentators when he was such a great player in the past. He just picked up the mantle from his fellow miserable, negative Yorkshireman Fred Trueman in the radio commentary box and his commentary is consistently overtly negative and lacking in any balance.
In other media he has singled out Vince and Moeen for criticism, and he may well have a point there, but to call the whole team one dimensional and lacking a plan B is just nonsense.
In the last few years England have won ODI series in Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies so any comments about not being able to play in all conditions are wide of the mark. Plenty of England batters have shown they can adapt to conditions and play accordingly, Root, Stokes and Buttler for example, but yes there are some who don't seem to have learned this lesson or if they have they can't apply it well enough.
Overall this is an exceptional England ODI team, maybe people have forgotten just how bad they were just a few years ago before Strauss came into the setup. Are they exempt from criticism? no but it has to be balanced. I'm old enough to remember some absolutely desperate England ODI sides of decades past so personally I'm really enjoying us having a very good team for once.

Don't rule out Pakistan just yet, it could be 1992 all over again. A massive game for them against New Zealand on Wednesday now with games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh to follow.
