since Ricketts has taken charge Route one has become a feature of his games; i dont believe it works , it certainly does not seem to be working for us if results are anything to go by, in the league we have lost 40% of the games and Drawn 50%.
most teams can defend route one with there eyes shut, it mostly results in lost possession leading to pressure quickly been put on towns defence. it often by passes most of the midfield , it is predictable it is currently uncommon to see Arnold roll out the ball to a defender and go through the midfield with the ball on the ground
if we look at our top scorer Ferjiri who despite dismal services has scored 14 goals . under Rickets he has played 17 games and scored five goals , one goal in the cup four in the league he managed to score a hat trick in one game one of which was a penalty. so 5 out of 17 games.
in contrast he played 5 full games for coyne , i dont think it is fair to include coming on in the 90th minute substitute against Crewe he scored 4 goals in 5 games .
whilst i appreciate forwards have lean periods , under Coyne we kept the ball on the ground a lot more ,there is big difference between 4 goals in 5 games and 5 goals in 17 .
if he had kept that scoring ratio up he would have score 12 goals instead of 5.
whilst Albert Einstein is broadly credited with exclaiming “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. i dont believe there is any evidence to say he did however we are experiencing just that with groundhog games of endless route one.

Reminds me of watching under Peters. I just don't think I want to go and watch anymore.

Reminds me of watching under Peters. I just don't think I want to go and watch anymore. i did not enjoy going to watch Peters games because it was like a groundhog day of football with boring rout one football. at the moment i dont excpect entertaining football we have to grind out results to stay up but apart the FA cup games watching rickets team play is not enjoyable .

Hoof ball, kick and rush...whatever you call it it's not pretty and certainly doesn't play to our strengths up front. If Ricketts believes in route one then I'm surprised Holloway doesn't start up top. Not that I'm advocating it by the way 😐

Burton was a must win game. We didn't win and I think we'll go down. Ricketts does not have the tactical know-how to set his team up for anything other than the highly predictable. Nor does he know how to get the best out his most influential players. Ricketts says it's down to confidence yet after we scored on Saturday, we conceded three minutes later. The confidence of that goal should have seen us go from strength to strength, if Ricketts is to be believed. We didn't. So, it can't be a lack of confidence. It's a manager that isn't anywhere near good enough and a group of players that lack organisation and don't have a clear plan to work to.
Peterborough will enjoy playing us on Saturday and on the Tuesday we have Doncaster Rovers at home. I'd be surprised if we get a point from those two. Then there will be just 12 games remaining and we will still need at least 17 points. Unfortunately, Roland won't sack Ricketts so we're stuck with him and can only watch as we casually saunter towards relegation.

compared to last season in ratio after 32 games we are actually only 7 goals behind
whereas we are 17 goals worse off defensively
the 4 problems are
deano, nsiala, Godfrey and Nolan
we've replaced them with rubbish or rather Askey did

It's the keeper that's the main issue.

Reminds me of watching under Peters. I just don't think I want to go and watch anymore. Only to a point. At least under GP we were largely set up to be a cohesive and tough to break down defensive unit (with respect to the ability of the players he had available to work with). We're a long way from that right now, even with 7 defensive players in the line up!

Hmm for me I'd say its Waterfall that is the poor replacement for Nsiala.
I don't think it helped that almost every player has been replaced and it seems to be the case still.
So Henderson was replaced by Coleman who was replaced by Arnold
Bolton was replaced by Emmanuel
Sadler, Waterfall and Beckles in the middle of defence has been a lottery.
There is no establised left sided player - despite having Hendrie on the books, its been an improving Haynes or a man in residents Beckles, - I'm starting to wonder whether Sadler would be best there.
The Midfield has also been a lottery. I found it odd that Bryn Morris was shipped out on the eve of the season. Docherty, Grant and Norburn all joined late - Loft and Colkett up the slack at the start of the season.
Askey did not know who the best three were out of Docherty, Grant, Norburn and Laurent and so played them all.
Whalley got injured, Eisa was ignored and Gilliead has faded.
Okenabirhie did not start the season Payne was sold and Amandi Holloway was the gun option. Angol came and went in a flash.
Two managers who don't seem to know what players or setup they wanted.
Its got all the hallmarks of failure and relegation I'm afraid. If they get away with this it may be a bigger miracle than last season.

Shows how good the defence and midfield were last season - and obviously the quality of manager. Only thing is last season we had s**t strikers and this season we have possibly even s**tter.

Its like the hoofball days of Paul Simpson
Get five in midfield with a flat back four at least when defending. Get players that will play with with Whalley and possibly Gilliead (though I don't have a lot of hope with him). There is enough quality in the midfield.
The midfield dilemma hasn't helped by the fact that : the loanee Colkett was sent back to Chelsea, Walker was signed and then loaned out straight away. Edwards who was injured was signed and clearly not fit. Vincelot too had also hardly played. Byrn Morris was brought back and sold. Jones was brought back and has disappeared. Loft was sent on loan.
Midfielders will brake down as the season goes. But for the bulk of last season Town had six and they seemed to get through the season (Dodds and Adams were sold or sent back) Ogogo was injured. Yet the midfield held and was not compromised.

I am confused as if ‘route one’ is his plan, why didn’t he buy a suitable striker in January to aim balls at? If Payne is the option, why not start him.
I think the problem is worse. I don’t think he wants to play route one, but I think his tactics are poor / not understood and players revert to route one as a result to not having other options available when in possession. This means we go direct when we do t have the players to do so.

Eg no target man striker, few wingers, no capable wing backs

Question - Should we be comparing Arnold to Dean Henderson or perhaps MacGillvery?
MacGillivery was the journeyman pro who was signed for the bench, If he had a run of 20 games plus (Like Arnold) I'm sure some errors would have crept in, they certainly did for Henderson.
And would any of the above mentioned do any better with the shambles in front of them this season?

Afraid so - checked it on the Derby website when we signed him and posted on the board However, since moving to Shropshire he has suddenly grown to 6 ft 2 inches when I checked a minute ago. I wonder what could have happened.................

For most of his time in charge I enjoyed watching Gary Peters' teams. If he was in charge right now I'd certainly have far more faith in his ability to organise the team and keep us in League 1 than I do under Ricketts.

Portsmouth would always have been an attractive proposition but I would like to know how hard we tried to keep him with regards to his contract offer. He would have been a very good number 1 keeper for us this season. Henderson's errors came mainly from over-confidence and cockiness. I have no doubt both would have done much better than Arnold or Coleman, even with this defence in front of them.

McGillivray is a far better keeper than many gave him credit for.
I also think he was very unfortunate not to keep his place on occasions last season.
Would have certainly been our number 1 this season - by a long way!!

Indeed, I wonder whether town was just a stopgap for MacGillvery.
I felt for him when he got dropped for Henderson in both the FA Cup and the Football Trophy but also when deputizing.
