Offer him an extension now.

When he signed i think i remember the club saying we had the option of another year.
If that is the case, trigger it now.

I would reluctantly accept £3 million for him.
Unless it was Ipswich, then it would be £4 million.

In that case trigger the clause or whatever to sign him.

A midfield destroyer but also a great ball player. League One’s Fernandinho.

you would think that ensuring he stays for another year would be a priority for town

From what I have seen so far of Grant this season he is a classy player and can be great when playing well. However, the comparisons with Ogogo from last season, I think, are inaccurate. Ogogo wasn't the defensive shield last season he was a high energy, high tempo player, technically worse than Grant. The player in his role last season was Godfrey, in my opinion, a superior player for the league. Look at the attributes of the two, Godfrey being a strong, athletic player with pace and stamina a level above. Grant is technically better again, but doesn't have the physical attributes, in League 1, the physical side I think is more important and part of the reason our midfield is less effective than last season. Godfrey could storm back words and forwards to break up the attack and set the team up to break out, rarely if ever getting overpowered. Grant makes up for his smaller physical presence by buying fouls cleverly and using his technical quality to pass forwards. But, when these fouls aren't given and he does give it away he doesn't have the physical presence to retrieve the ball, leaving us defensively worse off, while his passing may be superb, the forward players are inferior to last season and can't retain it as well, his passing relies on first touch and ball retention while Godfrey's style allowed him to carry it out and draw players in to relieve pressure on the better forward players who could then retain and build. So I think any comparisons to Ogogo may not be as relevant to our current predicament as we think. Godfrey was and is a truly special player, a level above in this league and unfortunately Grant won't be able to fulfill the full capacity of the hole left. Not knocking Grant, he is one of the best at his game and is probably better suited to a higher league, but is he what we need to progress in midfield? I'm not sure that he is best suited for the league we are in or our midfield where there aren't the bruises like Ogogo to help out if he loses the ball.

If you could combine Grants footballing brain with the physical attributes of Godfrey you'd have something rather special!

you would think that ensuring he stays for another year would be a priority for town Presumably, the one year extension option is a two way thing, in which case what’s the issue? Wait until the end of the season in case anything changes. Wasn’t there a similar extension to keep Ogogo (or someone) for his last season?

I remember having this discussion with someone on here a while ago about another player. I thought it was down to the player but other people told me in their responses that it is the club holds the power in these circumstances, ie it is the club that invokes the contract extension if they choose to do so.

Not 100% sure but I would think it would be the club who holds the option on the second year. However, who knows how this can play out if there are other clubs interested. Even at 31 he looks a cut above the rest in the division and I doubt his performances have gone unnoticed. I guess it would very much depend on who comes calling, whether Grant will get his head turned. We already know that having players under contract can mean nowt when looking to keep players within the club, I mean when looking to Nolan and Toto. If a team up the division shows and interest and a longer contract is on offer he might well feel he is better placed elsewhere and we might not be able to stop the move anyhow...

Well, it is true but it's not fantasy either. Would be playing in the Premier League and not for us. Can't win either way.

That surprises me. Surely it's down to the players, otherwise I can't see us having retained either Arthur or LJL. There seems to be some confusion about LJL. Although it looks like we offered him another 1 year contract, I distinctly recall there being a one year option in the original one year contract which he signed with us.

Maybe a player's right to take up an option might depend on the number of appearances.
That would explain LJL's extension, but not Arthur's.

If Granty can get himself fixed up with a mega money move, personally, as much as I don't want him to go, I'd be made up for him. Top bloke.

To be honest most contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. If a player really wants to go or the club want him out 'it will mostly happen. I'm afraid - to its detriment - football (most things now) is all about MONEY.
