Going well this season and top of the Birmingham League, any of you guys follow them?
My team West Bromwich Dartmouth won the league last season for the first time in 20 odd years when the great David Houghton played for us. This year we are languishing in mid table but we are a one man team, if Kadeer Ali does not perform then we lose.

Shrewsbury need a maximum of 2 wins from last 3 games to clinch the title for the third time in 5 years.

Shrewsbury CC have been one of the best club sides in the country for a while haven't they? If there was ever a 'National club league', Shrewsbury CC would be one of the frontrunners to gain promotion to it.

I the last few years seen the likes of James Taylor, Joe Leech, Ed Barnard come through the ranks. Birmingham League Champions and ECB National Knockout Winners and Semi Finalists. The only problem is we got a minor counties county team thats the only way we will get first class cricket in Shropshire. Shropshire dont tend to do all that well which is a shame as I think there is talent to be brought through at a national level in this county.

Richard Oliver, Jack Shantry and Joe Clarke are 3 other Shropshire cricketers to progress to County Championship level.
Together with Ed Barnard and Joe Leach they now comprise half the Worcestershire team!

Shame Shrophire CCC dont try start pulling strings and funding to apply for first class status as the players are coming through the system. Thing is a first class county cricket team needs a full set up and a designated ground that they own out right not sharing with a club side so I believe. It would cost millions maybe but I think it would work based on the talent coming through locally.

Shrewsbury CC selling London Road for development would raise enough to build a decent out of town ground I reckon..................

Well a few years ago they attempted a move but the locals signed up as 'social members' and blocked the move.
Although London Road is a lovely wicket the 3rd/4th team pitch at the tech is arguably the worst in the county from speaking to other cricketers. I remember playing on it a few years ago and its horrid.
Anyway heard Barney got some runs yesterday. Anyone seen or know how quick he is now out of interest? Always a brilliant bowler.

To anyone on the local cricket scene, is Cathedral C.C. still in existance?
The club was founded by my Dad in the mid 1930's as a breakaway from Shrewsbury C.C. Dad and some other working men who played there got fed up with their snobbish attitudes and started their own club.
Catherdral had a really good team when I was a lad and there was terrific needle when we played toffs teams like Shrewsbury and Wroxeter, Cathedral usually won.

With Berkswell the only game to be completed yesterday Shrewsbury had to put the champagne on ice. Needing just 8/9 points from the final 2 games (1 being a tricky tie against kiddy) the title should be theirs again.

They had some useful players, Steve Rudd, Richard Pike, W.E.Jones, quite a few seemed to end up playing for Shelton CC
A few of the others formed another side that also played at Frankwell called The Acorns CC

I go down Shrewsbury Cricket Club as often as I can with my son, and there are a few other Town fans who pitch up.
Was there yesterday. Very much up in the air as to whether the game would take place as Shrewsbury (not surprisingly) wanted to play but Barnt Green didn't (they were eyeing 5 points from an abandoned game to keep them just above the two relegation places).
In the end they were happy to start and play got under way at 3:30 in a reduced match of 24 overs. Before the end of the 5th over Steve Leach had hit a half century as he cut loose, wasting no time. In the end he made 78 from just 34 balls and we made 166-8.
We skittled them for just 53 to gain another 20 points and now lead Berkswell (the only other team to get a game on yesterday) by 29 points.
We are at home to Walmley on Saturday, who are mid table with nothing to play for, and victory would guarantee us regaining the Premier title. Would love to be there but will be at Barnsley instead cheering on Salop

Thanks for the info, as I left Shrewsbury in 1970 the names you mention don't ring a bell except for W.E. Jones who presumably is Wally Jones - a Boycott style opening bat in my day. He must have been knocking on a bit by the mid '80s. League cricket was the problem for Cathedral as they did not have their own ground and so had nowhere to host home games, prior to the introduction of leagues all games were 'friendlies' - although most were pretty competitive. My Dad had a huge number of contacts and never had any problems filling the fixture list with games at grounds all over the county. My 1950s/60s summers seemed to be permanent sunshine and cricket at picturesque grounds in Shropshire villages.
