Another point worth mentioning is its a different approach to GT. He waited for Collins to make a decision and the subsequent tribunal, by which point most players had been snapped up. He also waited a long time for a mystery striker to sign for us, again when he turned us down most players had been snapped up meaning we started the season with Marsden & Bradshaw up front. I believe Mellon offered contracts which the players didn't sign straightaway but hasn't sat around waiting for them. Yes it's not ideal but we are in a far better position than our previous spells on L1 and to get all players in before the start of pre-season begins which is something MM wanted. So cannot keep still, have to keep moving forward, while allowing out of contract players consider their options.

Won't see many arguing differently I'd imagine either.
Even if JLAA and JG don't sign I believe the current squad is good enough to stay clear any danger this season.
I'd rather have 'unwanted' players like Vernon and Mickey around the squad than contracted players like Doble anyday.

Catch 22 - offer 2 yr deals and honour them or only offer a 1 yr deal and miss-out on signings because they want more security. It may be better moving forward clubs offer a 2 yr deal but the option for player or club to cancel after one year with minimal payment needed to 'get them off the books'. As per MW interview earlier on Sky - clubs cannot wait for players to sign contracts they've been offered. MM wanted to tie down players he targeted to give us more flexibility and make us more competitive in league 1 and therefore there's a risk the out of contract players may miss out. What's still odd is that both JG and JLAA are happy to be part of the photo shoot, play in friendlys and still not be certain of a contract. Risky for them as much as it is an anxious time for the club trying to sign them. Which again shows how much they actually want to stay at the club and play for us.
That's nice to see.
Or they've got no other options. (head down)

But here is the way i see it. At end of last season, MM offered them contracts, but they decided to try elsewhere first.... so he brought in replacements..... then when the offers that they sought elsewhere did not come, so they asked if they could stay.... now we are trying to force out Vernon and Demitriou or cling to the hope of a massive payout from a untried youngster in the hope we can get funds to keep these 2. In my humble opinion, we would have been better keeping Mangan.... So was not far off the mark eh Paul.....

Appears not according to Matt Williams on 92 live You paint JG and JLAA to be a pair of villains as if the club have not encouraged any of their actions. I really wonder how attractive and formal the offers were that they were offered at the start of the Summer? And you would have preferred it if we had kept Mangan presumably because he proclaimed his great loyalty to the club via the press.... 2 weeks before signing for another club!

No not at all, they had a good season and decided to try and get better offers, but they are now reaping the rewards of not getting what they wanted and alienating 2 other players. Also just pointing out that when you said I was way off the mark, i was indeed closer than you realized...... but rather than agree.... you just try and put words that were not said into the equation, but i expected that!!

I think we need the season to start! The club isn't a shambles or in chaos at all. Yep, I'd agree the PR side perhaps they might have been done better but if both players sign before Saturday there's no story. And if the moves are delayed then we're without two useful players for a game or two. And if both deals collapse then its hardly a total disaster. I like JLAA and hope he signs but if he doesnt would he get another L1 club? I doubt it. And i d love us to keep Grando but his signing only becomes crucial if we sell Goldson in which case...we have cash to sign him. Relax, folks the worst isnt that bad.

Getting far too near the wire now.
Surely something has to happen in the next 24 hours? How the hell can the team prepare for the Millwall game not knowing whether two of their number will be there? It's seriously unprofessional.

It's seriously unprofessional. Team will be preparing with the understanding that Grandison and Akproare unlikely to be available on Saturday. Ellis for Grando and JLAA would probably not been in the starting line up anyway!

Hardly a shambles that our 3rd/4th choice centre back and 3rd/4th choice striker haven't signed up yet.
How many times have you heard about a club getting in trouble in League 1/League 2 for not meeting the financial fair play protocol?
I think this is being used to put pressure on the likes of Vernon,Caton and Demetriou.

Somehow, I seriously doubt that any pressure put on those 3 will have the slightest effect, possibly with the exception of Caton who is at least showing signs of looking elsewhere. The other two look like they are going nowhere until they are paid off. It's a question of who blinks 1st. Them or the Club.

In the meantime, there is every chance that we go into the Millwall game with no cover for the centre backs on the bench.

Think people would be better off relaxing a little and just look forward to Saturday rather than continually speculating on here about a situation out of their control. I know I am. COYB

I'm not sure how the FFP rules work. Is it based on the money we already have or on the money we've got in during the financial / calendar / football year? Is it based on weekly, monthly or annual incomes and expenditures? Can we bend the rules for a few weeks and see what transpires? The window is open for a while yet and someone could well come in for Goldson or Woods, we might even be able to ship Vernon, Burton or Demitriou out on loan in that time and don't forget we could still get some money in for Ginnelly. Surely it would make sense to get JLAA and JG signed up now and worry about the FFP later if nothing happens and nobody moves.
I'm sure the men at the top have thought about all this and if they're not panicking then I'm sure we don't need to. However MW and MM might look calm on the surface, but be paddling like hell underneath. I really hope that we don't have to panic sell or let good players go for nothing just because we couldn't work around the FFP rules.

Yes I was wondering myself how the timing of income and payments affects FPP. Surely most transfers are paid for in stages across a certain time period.

Seems like RW is stepping up the plate and funding the moves... means to me the budget has been changed, or some other financial jiggery Pokie
Makes you think the Millwall interest is real and its forced our hand....
Be interesting to see the SS story, and see if they sign da ting
