I was watching the greyhound racing on Sky a couple of weeks ago, when the Retired Greyhound Trust, paraded a retired dog looking for a home before each race. The Juan made me laugh, his racing name was something Be Bop, so at the rehoming centre, he'd acquired the name, Elvis. Now Elvis was unaware he was a bit over the top, and was a bit frisky ready to give it his best shot, so he looked All Shook Up when he was led away to the van taking him back to the rehoming centre, with the commentators on Sky saying, "Elvis has now left the building".
We had a goldfish called "Sudden Sam", after Wolves and US speedway Star, "Sudden Sam" Ermolenko. Wolves were always racing fodder for local rivals, Cradley Heathens, who thrashed us on a regular basis, until the arrival of Sudden Sam. His never say die attitude, meant we actually started WINNING against Cradley, so Sam was enormously popular amongst the Monmore Green faithful. So when we inherited this goldfish, it seemed appropriate to name him after our hero. Sudden Sam seemed happy enough swimming his tank, until Juan morning he gave us a shock. He laid some eggs............ahh....So a quick renaming, and we had a Sudden Samantha.
Another pet who regaled under a slightly less famous sportsman came our way. Our dog had passed away, so we went to a rescue centre to look. Due to pressure on numbers, they were only given 7 days to be either claimed, or rehomed, before they were put down. I didn't see anything I fancied. but a scruffy ancient Jack Russell caught the dragons eye. On the cage was the number "2", meaning he had two days of life left. The dragon wanted to save him, but I was adamant it was stupid, because he was so old. The dragon spent all night so the next morning I gave in, and we went back, on the condition I could name the dog. There he was, still sitting up the corner, with "1" on his cage. The staff were delighted we'd come for him, as they thought no Juan would be so stupid......kind as to save him. Was he grateful? Was he hell. He hated everything and everybody. He'd obviously always had to fight his corner, so he just carried on in his own sweet way. I named him, "Bostin", after Cradley speedway rider, John Bostin. I liked John, because he had a knack of coming fourth of four on a regular basis. John was cannon fodder, sacrificed by Cradley by the points system that operates in speedway. So as our newly appointed dog was slow, Bostin it was. He fought everything in the world for the next three and a half years, when incontinence and cancer their toll. He hated the vets as much as anything else, so we had the vets come to our house to do the deed of putting him to sleep. Not that he went quietly even then, trying to bite the vet and his assistant. He was totally unlovable, except to a couple of old fools who had taken him in. Now it was my turn to I cried that much, the vet knocked some off the bill!
Any road up, we've got a doggie named "Harvey" living next door to us. Named after Leeds keeper, David Harvey.
You had any "famous" pets?

going back 12-13 years ago me and my Dad in a half greyhound mut (ugly but good tempered and brimming with loyalty) from a rescue home, His previous owner was a dye-hard liverpool fan and named him Redknapp (after Jamie not 'arry.)
We toyed with the idea of re-naming him after a Salop player but the dog didnt seem fond of being called Redmile, Tolley, or Dunbavin.

Our cats are named Max and Ruby after the TV show.
On a similar track my comedy hero and legend Spike Milligan adopted a dog whilst serving in Tunisia in the second world war and named it after the Physician and psychologist Sir Henry Havelock Ellis. Spike used to get upset if any of his fellow squaddies failed to refer to the dog without giving him the full title when calling him in.
On a serious note Sir Henry Havelock Ellis saved spikes life by venturing onto a landmine after running ahead on a walk.
British comedy has a lot to thank that dog for.

The dragon has just reminded me of the short, dumpy goldfish the kids brought home from the fair, who lived very happily for many years with the name, Tony Kelly.
