I don't normally like to have a pop at referees but it's interesting to to see that no one has started a thread about the sub-standard performance of todays man in charge, who was truly one of the worst referees I've seen at this level. Especially since people were falling over themselves having a pop at Clattenburg after the Wycombe game on the basis of 'well he's reffed in Europe and I've heard of him, so he must have eyes on the back of his head and telekinesis powers'.
He could have set a precedent from the off when it came down to Northampton's blatant time wasting. I don't think Northampton were anymore guilty than any other side that has come down here this season but the fact they were allowed to get away with it for so long and without retribution made a mockery of the game in the second half.
Absolutely no conviction in any decision he made. Balls being kicked away after the whistle had gone, blatant fouls going unpunished (for both sides), players disrupting free kicks right under his nose and he let them get away with it all afternoon. Sometimes you'd rather a referee didn't give a decision at all than spend three minutes walking over to the player, giving them a few words and then deciding not to book them.
Certainly not sour grapes as I would happily admit Northampton were head and shoulders the best side that have come here this season. That number 19 was a hateful little bugger but he was without doubt the best player on the pitch and you can't dispute that we lost the game for any other reason than Salop just didn't turn up. The referee didn't cost us three points because he was equally as bad for both sides, but he certainly made the game a hard watch at times.
