No we didn't but the level of preparation detail Westley bragged about pre match was matched by MM ensuring that the ref knew about it when one of our players was pushed, held, tripped, nudged .. etc, especially in the first half. And when a real football match broke out in the second half, it showed they couldn't match us. A superb all round performance by all the players, one of the most enjoyable games this season.

What was also good was that our players didn't shy from the physical side of the game too.
Thought Ellis, Collins and Goldson didn't give an inch, and even less physical players like Woods and Gayle showed they weren't going to back down either. Great to see after last seasons numerous drab surrenders to the opposition

To be honest, after the pre-match hype, I don't think it was a particularly dirty game - I think Westley's reputation is causing people to see stuff that wasn't really there.
The first 20 minutes was pretty silly, but no-one really lost their head on either side, and once that was out of the way it was a decent game. Plenty of committed challenges and both sides were clearly desperate to win, but I didn't see any dangerous tackles, obvious cheating, or hystrionics. For the most part the players just got on with it, and I include Stevenage's in that.

I thought Stevenage played very well, yeah a physical team, but they unlocked us a few times, it was a great game to watch and probably the most entertaining game bar Chelsea this season. Think Westleys dig pre match worked against him!! but also think his post match interview was very good, not sure what people are getting there knickers twisted about.

I'd agree Stevenage are generally aggressive but not excessively so. It's more their habit of persistently pushing the rules to the limits to break up the flow of the game. Very frustrating to watch and we were fortunate there was some decent football at times yesterday. I'm sure they have players genuinely injured, like every other team. But when we've built up a head of steam and are applying the pressure and one of their players goes down for no obvious reason to take the momentum out of the game, as happened after an hour yesterday, it's hard to believe it's genuine because we've seen it from Westley teams so many times before. Still, it was good to see one thing change. Early in the game I muttered to my son that I'd never seen a good game with Stevenage. "Has anyone?" was his reply. Well now we have.

I sensed the pre match comments generated a fired up crowd /atmosphere and created a better game to watch. Thanks Stevenage!

I tend to think some of our supporters convinced themselves that Stevenage were going to be a bunch of thugs and that Wesley was the devil incarnate . He may be a t**t but overall I thought his side played well . Shrewsbury played very well in the second half and deserved the win Overall I really enjoyed the game and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Stevenage really feature in the promotion push . Whatever people think of Wesley he has some really good players and a side who came to play . I'm sure many will disagree . Town had to be at their best to get three points . One of the best matches for entertainment I have seen at the Greenhouse this season .

Calling Westley a t**t is unfair.
Unfair to t**ts.

It was good to see a team come to the Meadow and commit men forward.
The classic example was their equaliser. For the corner, they only had two men back covering both Collins & Mangan, one of which suddenly ran forward and arrived unnoticed to score. It was clever, but it was also brave. If they had messed it up they would have been very vulnerable on the counter.
Whatever Westley's normal tactics might be, I have a new grudging respect for Stevenage.

Thought it was excellent refereeing in the build up to Collins' equalizer. We fouled their guy but he made too much of a meal of it & the ref waved play on

If they exaggerate the reaction, particularly with the focus on simulation at the moment, the ref may decide that you're trying to con him... you reap what you sow.

I completely agree. if it's 50-50 whether it's a foil or not, the ref wouldn't be human if he didn't give the benefit to the team who's not trying to con him at every turn.
