Vomit-inducing video message from Richard Branson about the 'new' service. It was his company that both refused to run a direct London service, and then also refused to allow Wrexham and Shropshire Railway to route their direct service via Wolverhampton - thereby denying WSMR income and meaning their journey times could never compete, leaving them doomed to fail, no matter how delicious their roast dinners were.
It's great to have a direct service back, but the way it's happened leaves a sour taste and demonstrates all that is wrong with rail privatisation in this country.

Tend to agree with bobbyc. I also think that this will not be plain sailing for passengers using the London Midlands' service to local stations on our branch line. Virgin will want them out of the way so that their trains are not delayed.

Virgin take priority as it is! LMR should not be affected if running to schedule as Virgin train runs almost 45 after London Mid and the next runs after Virgin. However the Arriva on the half hour could be affected but it does not stop at the smaller stations.

Great to have direct link but won't be setting foot on it, refuse to get on a train named after a part of the unfortunate dwelling of Telford!

Used it Sunday. Didn't actually realise it was running so was a shock when I got a celebrities welcome to the platform. Went to Birminham and somehow managed a free Bucks Fizz and 2 free beers on the way! Oh and got harassed by someone from Sloppy star and radio Shropshire asking my thoughts on the journey #boreoff

Will be interesting to see how this service works out.
The direct connection is clearly the big selling point, but its actually no quicker than going to Brum or Wolverhampton and changing there at about 2 hours 40 minutes.
If you live near Stafford, Crewe or Wolverhampton you can drive to the station and get a direct train which takes less than 1 hour 40 minutes
At £200 for a return in the morning it's aimed at the business traveller. Think the tourist will stick to the day time cheaper services

The biggest bonus I can see happening is a price war for services to New Street and Wolves, I cannot see many areas in the country that will have three operators in competition. I often find Saturday fares cheaper on the fast Virgin service than the slower less comfortable London Midland.

Considering the number of commuters Shrewsbury to Wolves / Birmingham in the morning it certainly will lighten the load! The service starts at Shrewsbury and they use a Voyager which is Diesel/electric (not the Pendolino) which is nice to travel in.

If the service is underused on a Saturday I wonder if they will offer the £10 upgrade to First class that they sometimes do between Wolves and Euston?

I think that upgrade offer is only for returns from Euston though....excellent value with an inclusive snack in the price!

I have been offered them on the trip towards Euston . I wonder how restrictive the tickets will be and will Virgin allow you to return on any route if you miss it coming back? Although the timetable of the service are spot on for football matches, arriving just before 11:00 and an 18:25 return making almost all London area grounds an easy journey.
