Whatever you want to call it, I think we missed our usual setup tonight. The fullbacks were caught a couple of times slightly too far forward and I think the team just lacked a bit of balance. We don't have the wide players to play the 4-4-2 we used to under GT for example. Looking forward to seeing Grimmer back in the team on Saturday and us going back to what we know.

The 442 tonight had a big gap in it between Goldson and NPK with Manset stood in there in loads of space, near the start. That could gave caused us more than it did. Think they were used to JG being there mopping things up.

First half was flat, choppy, more long ball than to feet, using JC as target man (my thoughts anyhow). Pitch cut up too easily. Dunno why. Played better when we got the ball down. Always play better on the floor actually.

Back to 3-5-2 with the players we got it suits best.

You have to wonder whether MM is now faced with the dilemma of trying to cram in all his midfield talent into the starting 11 to keep them all happy at the expense of our best formation.

Well it was a diamond in midfield, with Woods behind Lawrence and Weso, behind Grant. What I was saying above was more about the back two and the huge gap between them.

I thought it was 4-3-1-2 . Either way it was narrow and something similar to what we played second half at walsall and didn't work . Demetriou doesn't look right playing it and goldson is always looking for him over the top but he didn't get forward which is understandable . The only one who looked comfortable was grandison . I wander what mm will do Saturday because I can't see him having the balls to drop wes woods or lawrence .

Maybe MM just thought this was the best way to approach the game having only played Walsall a few days ago. Maybe after the first leg and after conceding two goals he identified a way to limit Walsall's chances. Perhaps to the detriment of our own goal scoring but even so, it worked. Wasn't at the game of course but from what I understand this morning from reading the comments on here Walsall didn't really get a sniff last night. People commenting that they had a poor game, they had nowt up front. You never know, maybe the reason for that was down to the way MM set us up... I dunno. But more than one way to skin a cat as they say, more than one way to win a game of football...

We can play a lot better than that, and I'm sure Walsall can. I agree, 3-5-2 suits our players, but 2 opposition managers have said after beating us Juan Nil this season, "sometimes you have to win ugly". Looks like it was our turn.

I prefer 11 on pitch. Formations are never rigid in a good flowing side and evolve into whatever shape depending on the situation and each one listed misses the Keeper.

The formations , 442 , 433, whatever , automatically accept that a goal- keeper will be playing. It's the formation or set-up for the ten OUTFIELD players.

I think you'll see grimmer back in and weso drop to the bench on Saturday. Having someone as consistently good as a sub just shows the strength of the squad thus season.

I bet it has Bradshaw featuring predominantly in it.

Too many deserving players vying for two few slots; it's a manager's dream dilemma. But keeping a squad happy is a skill. MM is very noisy about us being a squad and not a team, so I would hope that is the key. Perhaps instructing one of the starting mid fielders to go hell for leather for 45 minutes with a pre-empted plan for a change at half time will make sure that the quality players on the bench will still get game time.
And when Mangan is fully fit, a similar approach could be used with the strikers. At present the dressing room seems happier than it has been for several years, but good footballers want to play football, and sitting around waiting for an injury to somebody else to give you an opportunity to shine can get very frustrating.
Add Wildig apparently shining on the training park, Ellis who did everything asked of him... plus Halstead, Gayle, Clark and Vernon all itching to pull on the first team shirt, Mr Mellon is going to have to be very canny at man management.
But with Winter still to come in full force, the deterioration of the GM surface is a big worry. There is no doubt that a 3-5-2 formation with flowing passing sees us at our best, but if the ball is going to start getting stuck on a poor surface, it will become a great leveler, which will be a shame.
There have been two moments this season thus far that epitomise the quality of football we want to play: Clark's goal against Bury, the 5th, which starts with interpassing between him and Woods in the center circle, before Woods darts away on a run down the left, which Clark feeds and then launches his own run into the box before jinking to his left to take the clever dinked pass on his chest, swivel and smash it home. When seen from the Town Behind-the-goal-camera, it is a stunning piece of football.
But then the equaliser against Dagenham was equally as beautiful... and not just for Mango's wonder strike. On YouTube, as well as showing the Football League's highlights video... the Daggers do one of their own, the vantage point being from a greater distance. And that does allow the whole build up to be viewed... from a clearance from our right hand corner flag, through great control in the center circle, crisp accurate passing ending up with Grant's lob through for Mangan to blast home... 5 passes and a shot... from our corner flag to the back of the net... it is football poetry.
So we don't just need the right formation and the players to exploit it... we need a good surface to play our football on. So get out the heavy roller, new turf... 3 or 4 G... call Carpet Warehouse... anything to prevent us getting into December/January/February hoofball contests with "win-ugly" teams.

Deary me... Yep. Embarrassing really. As embarrassing as a grown man with a School girl style crushes on a young boy's like Tom Bradshaw? When I take the p**s I do not use smiley faces this is why I keep catching numpties like you out, who then attempt try to make themselves look clever by pointing out something that was intentional.
