I've been a regular visitor to this site for a while now, always interested to read the latest views etc. Just wondering, i'm coming down from Manchester on the train on Sunday with some mates who are Salop fans for the day having attended various games with me throughout the season. we're aiming to get to Stoke by 11ish and need to hang around until 12:15 to meet some mates who are coming up from London. Does anyone know if there's a likely watering hole where we might get a few drinks while we wait? my memories of the place are that the station is between Hanley and Stoke and that there's not really anything near the station! any ideas welcomed, it'd be nice to get a few songs going with other town fans too!

There are one or two pubs close to Stoke Station...if you need to stay around that area for a time I can recommend the 'Corner Cupboard' which is a short walk from the station opposite Staffordshire University. Been there a fair few times and it's a decent place...there are also pubs right across from the station (come out and turn right and you'll spot them). To get to the 'Corner Cupboard' turn right out of the station and then left up the main road...Staffs Uni will be on the right hand side of the road and the pub is on the left, opposite the Uni car park.
Either that or Stoke town centre (not Stoke-on-Trent city centre, which is Hanley) is a short walk from the station and there are some ok pubs down there...but I'm not too sure what there gonna be like on the Sunday as they are used by Stoke City supporters...whether any will be about I don't know...
Anyhows our kid, plenty of options near the station...

Corner Cupboard it is then! Anyone else whose about call in and say hello. Must admit to being nervous about hanging around in Stoke, last time i went to the britannia i went with my girlfriend whose a Sunderland fan. After the game there were running battles on the car park, Sunderland won 2-1 and we're on our way back to the bus stop to head back to her house in Hanley and she starts going on about what a good win it was!! i had to smuggle her on to a sunderland supporters bus for our safety! One of the lads i'm travelling down with is a city fan and he's had problems in the past too... in fact i've not met anyone with a nice word to say about the place or the people!

I guess every place has a few undesirables our kid. Stoke may have more than most I guess...but on the other side of the coin I've got good mates from Stoke and there coming on the Sunday to cheer the Town on...

Corner Cupboard it is then! A few options near the station, The Roebuck, The Firkin and the Terrace are another three studenty pubs within a few hundred yards. As the man says just turn right out of the station and you cant miss them. Perchance they're closed and you've no option but to wait up there for your mates, the North Stafford Hotel 10 yards across from the station has a public bar with Pool table etc...It's hardly a barrell of laughs but they sell beer. in fact i've not met anyone with a nice word to say about the place or the people! I think you'll be pleasantly suprised come sunday...we do friendliness and unfriendliness in equally extreme measures, pretty sure you'll only see the good side this weekend

Afternoon Shrews....
For Stoke pubs, I'd be very tempted to give Stoke town centre a wide berth. It's not the safest place on the planet on Stoke matchdays for non-Stoke supporters. Yes, I know. Stoke aren't playing, but it only takes a couple of idiots and your day could be spoiled.
The three best hopes are the HARVESTER (no colours) and the POWER LEAGUE bar which are right near the ground. There's never been an ounce of trouble at these two places when Stoke play, they are both away (and non-Stoke) friendly and convenient.
The third is the TRENTHAM HOTEL, which is a Toby carvery type place which is on the Trentham Road. Those of you heading for the club car park will go past this (I'm not sure what the arrangements are for the play-off final, but usually it's pay and display with tickets having toi be pre-bought).
Enjoy!
