As Chelsea at 5 points clear at the top, even if they lose on Sunday vs Man Utd, they will remain top of the league when they play us..... Therefore... the question is... have we ever played a team while they have been at the Top of the Top flight... ?

Wasn't that the season Everton nearly went down? Pretty sure they weren't top though, Arsenal were leading the league pretty much all season until the last few weeks when they mucked up and United came in.

I would say this Chelsea side is the highest profile Club we have ever played. And I include the Liverpool team at that time we played them. I would put them Fourth behind Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona in rankings of best teams in Europe and I don't think we have played anyone that high before.

This arguably has to be the toughest test any Shrewsbury team has ever faced.

not really fussed about Chelsea reserves, we should p**s on them from a great height. when was our last 5 goal clear win? was it oct 1962 Shrews 7 Gas 2, or someone else since. either way my 2 "lucky" STFC Loggerhead bears Graham and Roland and Lenny the Lion are over the Effing Moon. this is one small step for Shrews, one giant setback for Chelsea.
Some Chelsea tart on 5 live last night reckons Chelsea have outgrown The Premier League and will win all 4 Cups they are left in plus the league. what a complete Tart! he obviously has never been to fortress Greenhous.
Jose Mourhino smiles like the cast of East Enders, miserable old Git.
as for the club shop, just done my Christmas shopping , bought !0 boxed STFC pens for £20 plus £2.50 postage. bargain. loads left. pens normally £4.99 each. slimline and write so smoothly. no lenny the lions left, Sib sold me the last one.
Finally loads of bargains at Lidl. next Thursday 30/10 whole cooked Lobster £5.99, whole large cooked crab £2.99 plus loads more bargains tomorrow and following Thursday. Er Floreat Salopia!

I think I remember Everton being fourth and us fourth from bottom when we beat them. As others have said, Ipswich were riding high when they fell to us the first time. Dont know if they were top though, isn't there a website that can tell us that sort of thing?

Therefore... the question is... have we ever played a team while they have been at the Top of the Top flight... ? Surely the best bet is a top flight team that alphabetically would've been top when we might have played them in a preseason friendly when they had not played a league game. But even that mightnt have happened.

Just been up in the loft to find the Ipswich away game replay programme from 80/1 They were top on GD from Villa with 38 pts (2 for a win back then). As the replay was the Tuesday 3 days after the first game and therefore no league games between them it is safe to assume that they were top when they played at Gay Meadow in the first game.
If we were to get a draw against Chelsea at the end of 90 mins I'd take that.
Just a thought - did we play Blackburn in the League Cup the season they won the Premier? Were they top then?

We may be over three divisions below Chelsea but we're not going to be playing that side, we're playing a 'group' of players rather than a 'team' of players i.e many of them won't have played a competitive 90mins together.
I think I'm right in saying that the old Central League no longer exists for Prem clubs and they have some U-21 thing nowadays which doesn't include players in the current squad, although they can promote players from it. Solanke is one, as he wasn't listed in their senior 'squad' a few weeks ago. So I'm not sure what the rules are here, whether they are allowed to choose from those U-21's or whether it's only those listed at the bottom of the page here:

I just hope we can keep our nerve and not end up conceeding an early goal. Fear if we do it could end up being a cricket score. As usual with these type of games, the longer it stays 0-0 the more the advantage starts to shift towards the underdog. Lets face it, if we are still level after 90 minutes it will be regarded as a potential major upset.

The Everton side that stuffed us in the league cup 4-1 in 1985 had won the league the season before, also won the cup winners cup and lost the FA cup final after extra time as they were knackered. They would have won the European Cup that year if it hadn't been for Liverpool at Heysel. Could say they are the best side we have played.

Difficult to say this Chelsea side arguably have tougher opposition and have sustained a prolonged period at the top and have won the Champions League which I think is harder to win than the old European Cup. Squad comparisons are also difficult due to the top Club's need to keep far larger numbers of quality I think that Everton's first XI would give the Chelsea First XI a run for their money but wouldn't sustain a challenge against this Chelsea side or compete as well against the current R Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern. Munich. Chelsea have also got Players picked from all over the World competing for a place in it's side rather than just the UK & Ireland.

That season they won the UEFA Cup and finished 2nd in the First Division. I was thinking of when we beat them 2-1 the following season in the FA Cup, losing in that crazy quarter-final at Leicester in the next round and missing out on a semi at Villa Park against Spurs.

Therefore... the question is... have we ever played a team while they have been at the Top of the Top flight... ? In answer to your question, Shrewsbury played Arsenal at Gay Meadow in February 1991. Arsenal at the time were top of the first division. Around about the same time Dalglish quit as Liverpool manager (first time). Arsenal went on to win the league that season. Shrewsbury lost the game 1-0 in Tony Adams first game back following a spell at her majesty's.

Just to go back to that Ipswich side. The previous season they finished third in the top flight. In 1980/81 they finished second behind Villa, reached the FA Cup semi final losing 1-0 to Man City and won the UEFA Cup (when it was worth winning!) Pretty decent side stuffed with interenationals with the likes of Kevin Beattie, Terry Butcher, Allan Hunter, Mick Mills, George Burly, John Wark, Arnold Muhren, Frans Thijssen, Paul Mariner in the squad. Statto!!

They also slogged out head to head with Villa till almost very end, winning at Villa park in mid April which might just have made them thought they were over the finish line. But a storming finish from Villa gave them the edge.
And who had Ipswich beaten in the previous round? Yes Villa, so maybe they were just a little fresher at the seasons end.

Just depends on who is playing. Could be that quite a few of the opposition players won't have many full competitive 90 mins under their belt. True match fitness is something which is very difficult to replicate on the training pitch or in the gym.
