The locals drove like maniacs when I was there (1990s) & the road accident stats were appalling so take care. It's a nice city - I expect the ancient trams (British) are still squeezing through the streets. Amazed me how people could park knowing the tram would somehow get past them.
The Gulbenkian Museum was interesting, not least for its (apparently typical) Portuguese bureaucracy - we had to queue for a ticket, which was free, and then hand our ticket to a man collecting them, who let us in.
Restaurants were cheap & the food was good - try bacalhau (salt cod) which is a speciality. Beer and wine inexpensive too.
If you can get out of town, Sintra's worth visiting. The Estoril coast is close to Lisbon, although I wasn't so keen on Cascais (pretty enough in parts but a bit too full of the Mediterranean set for my liking).
This has made me realise I'd like to go back there. I'm envious!

Travelled up from the Algarve by train many years ago, that was an experience in itself, spent two nights in Lisbon booked a hotel unknowingly bang in the middle of the red light district, that was an experience in itself, went to watch Sporting v Boavista that was an experience in itself. From what I remember it was a nice city, beware of the pickpockets, the seemingly openness of people trying to sell you drugs and enjoy being accosted by the ladies of the night, the beer was cheap though. Have a good time.

I am going between 4th and 6th November. Seeing Benfica and Sporting play in the Champions League. There are two bus tours on 48 hour ticket. Looking at doing this as gives good overview of City so you know where things are in relationship to each other. Also tram line 28 is worth the ride takes you to parts the tour buses can't.
When are you going?

Loved the place although it`s a while since I was there. The Monument D Escobars (sp?) is impressive and sitting around drinking coffee is a must. Saw Sporting`s ground but didn`t get to La Luz which is a bit out of town from what I recall.

Brilliant city and one that is well worth 'walking' as you stumble across all sorts of interesting places. The Castle/ fort ? on the hill overlooking is worth the effort to get to.
Went to see Benfica whilst there ( can't remeber for the life of me who the opponents were) but the stadium is worth going to if there isa match on, very cheap and i seem to remember the tram went there from the city centre.
Will go back one day

Yes the tram does go to Benfica which has a shopping centre around it. I love Lisbon, its not too polished but its lively and cheap. Lots of work has been done recently on the waterfront, some great bars up in the Barrio Alto and its a city you can walk around or just get a tram to the higher bits. The best Pastas de Nata are to be found out at Belem.

I would buy match ticket online in advance as can double in price in Portugal on day of the game. They are likely to be on sale in the week before the game with print at home option

Great city with great people. Did a Porto - Lisbon double header a few years ago and loved both places.
If you are going for more than a few days check out the nearby town of Sintra just a short train ride away.
If the beach is your thing you also have Cascais & Estoril along the coast. The Casino at Estoril is the largest in Europe and was made famous by the Bond Book/Film 'Casino Royale'. The Estoril football team could be a viable, low key alternative to watching Sporting or Benfica.

The Estoril football team could be a viable, low key alternative to watching Sporting or Benfica. Also Belenenses, who play in Belem, on the western side of Lisbon.

Atlético Clube de Portugal who play in the Second Divisiom are at home that weekend as are Sporting's stiff's who are a Second Division side. Kick Off times haven't been confirmed yet.
Looking for you I spotted Clube Oriental de Lisboa are also athome with a likely 5pm kick off when I am out there so may well get three games in two days.

Yes mate, don't think I missed any of the landmarks though football wise it went like...
in a live game in Sporting Portugal vs Paços de Ferreira at Estádio José Alvalade.
Did a stadium tour (and museum) at Benfica (Estádio da Luz) and was in Belem to see the Tower so popped over to have a look at Belenenses (Estádio do Restelo).

Can't remember the Belenenses stadium that well - basically an open concrete bowl (including most of the seating) as I recall. Is that right? How many would it hold do you think? Did Nani play - any good? What was the Sporting crowd like - their away support was lively when I saw them at Belenenses (lots of flares), but then that's a short trip.
