Opening ceremony about to start on the Beeb. Going to see the cycling on friday at the 'Sir Chris Hoy velodrome' which I'm most looking forward to. A few finals including the individual pursuit, medal ceremonies and an excuse to see Laura Trott in tight shorts Got the flag of St George through in the post today to loft high. Cost me £1.88 for a 6 by 3 foot flag. Some good to come out of England's dismal World Cup I suppose On a site note hearing God Save the Queen bellow out of Celtic Park should be something quite special. Also seeing Hockey and Squash during my visit in Glasgee Anyone else going?

Got two nights at the athletics. Chose the nights specifically to see Ohoruogu, Ennis-Hill, and KJT but all three have since pulled out for various reasons so slightly disappointed with that. Really looking forward to seeing David Rudisha again though as well as Kirani James and Greg Rutherford.

Going to a morning session of athletics with the family including a five and one year old on Tuesday.
I pity the people sitting on my row.
'And sent him homeward, Tae think again'......

I'm fairly sure some of these countries are made up - Norfolk Island can't be a real place and their team looked like a pensioners outing to Barmouth
Do like the Commonwealth Games - it's kind of like getting getting all your ex girl friends together in the same place to remind you of succesful conquests of days gone by that you will never achieve again

Yep, there has to be something that makes Formula 1 look exciting and this is it. Just hope there are some characters from far long countries so as to break up the tedium of the usual suspects winning everything.

In Scotland. Sure it'll be fine.

Had a hotel booked in Ayr until I saw a b&b in Hamilton with two rooms left this morning and quickly snapped it up. Still paying way way over the odds for it though.

Loved it when the Crown Prince of OMboboland or where-ever could,nt open the torch to get the message out. The look on the Queens face said it all. And the icing on the cakey, Rod Stewart, the well known London w****r and Long Term Tax Exile singing as flat as flip. Looking forward to seeing the cream of I of M thrash the Cayman Islands in the Three Legged Race. Is'nt Rod Stewart the Patron Saint of the Cayman Islands?

Fun fact of the day.
It's illegal to be gay in 42 of 53 commonwealth countries.
God save the queen indeed.

Despite what we think about it, I am sure the younger participants see it as an opportunity to compete against established athletes to develop their careers

Those tax laws p**s me off, chuffing ridiculous to try and snaffle a portion of a person's worldwide earnings for competiting in your country.

If every country that approach they wouldn't pay any tax at all on them, would they? If every country taxes what that person gets paid for competing in their country they would. And then the person gets taxed on other income (sponsorship) in their home country. If a sportsperson races once each in 20 different countries and each country taxes their earnings as a whole then surely they are getting taxed 25 times for the same thing? Doesn't seem very fair.

Depends on whether taxed on a percentage of or the whole lot I suppose, the article doesn't make that clear - if it's the whole lot then yes, it's daft but I wouldn't have thought that would be the case. When it comes to sponsorship, surely the only reason they get such exorbitant amounts is because of the exposure across the world, not just in their home country.

I too have considered that ladt point but that is impossible to implement fairly. How do you calculate what exposure in what meeting in what country has contributed what amount to a person's earnings?

Mo Farah is the latest name to pull out.
Kind of relieved in a selfish way as it justifies my decision to go for the cycling and not the athletics afternoon on Sunday.

So on what day will England have collected enough medals to beat the rest of the home nations entire tally?

When it comes to sponsorship, surely the only reason they get such exorbitant amounts is because of the exposure across the world, not just in their home country. Just to be clear, nobody would be taxed twice on the same income, let alone 25 times. The problem is Bolt et al earn nothing directly from participating in the Commonwealth Games, so what can be taxed? Either you tax nothing or you try to tax a proportion of their earnings, the argument being that those earnings are generated in part from the athlete's involvement in such events. Not entirely satisfactory either way and, as with so much of every country's tax system, not really up to speed with the modern world. Anyway, I thought they said on TV that Bolt was running in the relay. Sure I read a while back that a deal had been done for the Games, much as foreign clubs' players have had a special exemption when the Champions League final has been at Wembley.

So on what day will England have collected enough medals to beat the rest of the home nations entire tally? I'd have thought England would need to win about 7 times the medals of the collected other home nations to avoid under-achieving when populations are compared. No grounds for anyone to be triumphalist till we pass that mark. I say that as a predominantly, but not wholly, English person.
