The Sun Monday, 10 May 2004 Quinns Luke at Big Time Jimmy Quinn fears he will lose star striker Luke Rodgers if SHREWSBURY fail to book their place BACK in the Football League at Sundays Conference playoff final showdown with ALDERSHOT. Shrews boss Quinn said “ I’m Sure if Luke fires us into the Third Division he will want to stay here but he may well get lured to bigger and better things” Rodgers insisted “ I know I am Capable of playing at a higher level – a lot higher than Third division football” – “But the main thing is to get Shrewsbury into the Football league” (then stuff on Aldershot) So this means Lukes off come what may - I know its only the sun but im guessing the Quotes are true!!

No surprises (by the subject of the post, I thought we were in for an absolutely shocking revelation!) and either way I'm happy for Luke to leave.
Hopefully by shooting us into the third division though.

I don't think anyone would begrudge Luke a move from STFC. His level of commitment to the club has been excellent, giving 100% whenever he's played when he could have moaned about being stuck with us.
As Welshshrew says, let's hope he scores the winning goal on Sunday and gives us another cracking memory...

Sounds like they nicked Graham Hickless's interview out of NLP yesterday. Luke says "I know I'm capable of going higher, but the main thing first is to get Shrrewsbury into the Football League and then take it from there. Next season I shall be in the last year of my 4 year contract and hopefully I shall see it out with Shrewsbury".
JQ talks about the future, the New Meadow and hope Luke will want to be part of it, but "there again he may well get lured to bigger and better things - but we will do our best to keep him".

As I've said before, the guy has scored at a rate over 1 in every 2 starts (including 2 years in a relegation zone team).
Since his breakthrough into the first team he hasn't gone more than 4 league starts without a goal.
And he is our top league goalscorer in at least 15 years - can anyone advise who would have got more?

The Sun have taken the quotes out of context, by all accounts Luke wants to see his contract out at the meadow, if we get back to division three hes in the shop window big time again and will be able to play some decent football again. If we stay down then Luke has unfinished business as he will not depart without giving it his best shot to get us back in the league in his final year of his contract. You have to remember we paid for his porshe, we gave him his first pro contract, we stuck by him during his court case and we have shown nothing but loyalty to the little guy, i think he wants to give us something back and thats by showing a bit of loyalty to us the fans and the football club. Luke will see out his contract with us. Do not worry about that unless Mr Whycherly has other ideas

Luke owes us nothing now IMO.
Out of interest, if he does stay until the end of his contract would we get a tribunal fee for him?

Yes we would get a fee at a tribunal as (I think) players 24 and under are not allowed a free under Bosman. Not that I think it will come to that as if we do go back up Luke is negotiating a 1 year extension to his current deal just so we can get a fee for him end of next season.Top man

We wouldn't be in the play-off final without Luke's contribution.

Which on recent events means next to nothing

Ricketts as a like-for like replacement?
Will cost us nothing as well (I presume).

Lukes a lot happier then he obviously was a month or two. Can't see Luke signing a one year extension with the club whether we go up or not. He's been here in the first team for nigh on 4 years now. He knows how good he is, we know how good he is and the club do as well. The club have turned down interest in him. He knows its time to move on, and yes if he doesnt move this summer, of course he'll sit out the rest of his contract and go for peanuts to wherever he wants. And I wouldnt begrudge him that.

I love Lukey and always will he's a little star and deserves to shine. I'm sure I speak for the majority of fans when I say that I wish him well for the future, whether that means for us in the Conference or hopefully in the 3rd division or with someone else. The guy gets a bad press he's not a thug just gets passionate about the things he cares about.
