At the battle of Boroughbridge (1322), the rebel forces under the command of the Earl of Hereford, were attempting to cross a wooden bridge held by the royalist army. Confident that their superiority would win the day, Hereford and his men stormed into the opposition on the bridge. However a royalist pikeman, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks, and skewered Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. Hereford's agonised dying screams turned the advance into panic. Now. Substitute the words "royalist pikeman" with the word "referee", and "iron pike" with "play-offs", and we can start to imagine how the current-day Hereford felt on Monday...

If only that royalist pikeman had been red carded in a previous battle , thereby not being eligible..........who knows what might have happened. now please don't mention Hereford again. I'm still trying to come to terms with it
