The next few days are going to have a marked effect on the future of the club as the results can obviously go in favour or against Shrewsbury Town. I am particularly concerned with what will happen after the end of the season when JQ has to sort out who he going to retain.
Some players are out of contract but what happens if we go up to Division 3? The squad is IMO far too weak and small to perform with any great hope of advancement. We have a relatively successful centre-back partnership in Tinson and Ridler though I feel Tinno will be shown up for lack of pace against quicker forwards. There is no real cover in this area. The left back position has been a problem all season so strengthening needs to take place there.
Tolley and Edwards have given energy to the midfield but neither they nor O'Connor (can't see him lasting another season) have the flair and vision to provide good ball for the front-runners. We need a play-maker. Sam Aiston must be retained and Ryan Lowe, despite his variability, has pace and pops up at the right time to score goals.
Up front I have been very disappointed with the lack of goals scored by whichever partnership JQ has played. I know Luke Rodgers is still hailed as the Saviour of the club by many but surely even the most die-hard of Luke supporters must be disappointed with his goal return this year. We all expected a bounty of goals pre-season. Quality strikers don't miss the target as often as ours have done.
If we don't get promoted what future is there for the older players? Surely Quinn himself must hang up his boots. The youngsters, Tolley, Moss and Rodgers included must look to play at a higher level to advance their careers. We could be left with a very different looking side and automatic promotion next season will seem an even bigger hill to climb than we thought this would be.
We must get the right result on Monday and then again in the Final. I see hope for the club in Div 3 but despair in the Conference for yet another year.
