So being a safe bet, it was a good signing then? Simpson made a good signing, go on you can do it. Bet he can't Mike Of course he was a good signing, Mike - a great signing - and if memory serves I made a post to that effect when he joined us. A no brainer - surely any manager with the requisite dough would have been interested - but a great signing none the less. Sherriff was also a good signing, as were Murray, Jackson, and Coughlan. The point is he failed to galvanise this set of players into the top three side they should have been. But when's Jonah going to acknowledge that, eh?

Don't know whether he will be the division's top goalscorer but he knows where the goal is and I have no doubt he will prove to be a fine signing. I don't understand all this hand wringing about not putting pressure on the players, any striker, regardless of price tag is under pressure to score goals and there's aways the risk of injury every time a player crosses the white line. He's a good player, we've signed him, why all the worrying?

But he sold him for a massive profit. Credit where it's due, that means a lot to a club like ours. Yeah and ended up paying off the likes of Pugh who is now banging them in for fun in the division above.

Holt dictated where he played (dropping deep at every opportunity) meaning that his return from open play was much less than hoped. Interesting to note that Holt scored more in League 1 and the championship than he did in league two. Can also remember Simmo saying that he liked SCS in the centre of midfield (played in there in the 7-0 Gills game) but as SCS declared he didn't enjoy playing there he was 'utilised' elsewhere. Simmo did have a decent eye for a player but for every Sigurdsson, Thornton and Holt there was an Elder, Bright ans Simpson Jr. Can't help but wonder where this club would be if we had a manager that could have capitalised on the 'push' to gain promotion from RW.

Yes Holt was a good signing, but lets face it, it was hardly a snip and also not like he plucked him from obscurity. Facts are lots of other teams wanted him its just we were one of the few who could afford him.
Tierney, Pugh, Holt, Symes and Humphrey are just some of the players playing at a higher level now that Simpson had.

we were talking about this on the way to the DV on Saturday. Two early wins at Exeter and then nothing til Sharpesy banged in an og winner for us the following April at the Don! The first of 3 consecutive away wins when it really mattered. That away run was what did for Simmo that season. He just couldn't find a winning formula away despite having the best home record we've ever had at the new ground (most wins, most goals, fewest defeats, fewest conceded etc). He blamed all and sundry for that and it didn't go down well. Grant was a snip at 170 and the sale was nearer to 600 with all the add-ons. Great business!

Great business! bang on, I hardley missed an away game that season and remember in March as fan of the day having a massive rant about why we never won away from home (and to be fair we were constantly changing the team around away from home looking for that win!). Such a missed oppertunity that season!
