Yeah, daft thing to do. Now the question will be whether he was in the right state of mind to play from the off. But even so, we should have seen that game out...

I don't want to kick a man when he's down, but can anyone recall Rooney putting in a really top notch performance in an England shirt?
Admittedly no one has played well recently but when it comes to big games for England Rooney often fails to perform and often ends up doing something stupid.

Apparently it's a one match ban with a second at UEFA's discretion. Personally, though I know there's no chance of it, I'd be quite happy to never see him in an England shirt again. Actually it might happen as I may well not bother watching another England game - totally sick of it.

Exactly.
It is not just that he often chokes in a big pressur einternational game, it is that he does something stupid and petulant that messes it up for everyone.
He messed up big style in Germany. He threw his toys out in South Africa. How will he screw up in Poland?

The problem for England isn't goalscoring, it's defending.
Quite simply. We can't do it.
Capello has never been able to turn us into a solid defensive unit.
Unfortunatley this is the reason that as soon as we come up against a half decent team at the Euros (Spain / Germany etc) we will get anhiliated.

If I was to kick someone at work I'd be sacked, no ifs, buts or maybes. This clown does it far to often for anyone to put up with.
The problem is when he (or anyone else) gets himself sent off, England are rubbish with ten men. Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina etc all look dangerous and can still win a game if someone gets sent off, whereas we are usually clueless and spend the whole remainder of the game on the back foot defending on the edge of the 18 yard box.
The guy might be our best striker when he's on his game, but is it worth the risk?

No doubting Rooney is a class player for Man United in the Premier League, but for me he has yet to really put in a fantastic performance in a really big European game for United or an important game for England. Too often in those games he also does something daft like yesterday's sending off It's not like he's a youngster anymore and really should be leading by example now rather than leaving his team to struggle with ten men

With the news about his dad, was he in the right frame of mind to play? I know he said he was but, perhaps this could have been a factor for his stupid actions! Do you think Rooney has watched the highlights of our game against Torquay with one Rene Howe?

Rooney and Bent where dross last night. Carroll and Welbeck in the Euro's for me. He just lost the ball while Bent stood still. Pretty poor. Bent may of scored but i think Welbeck is better with more want and speed.

Apparently Joe considers it "the most pathetic sending-off I've seen in my life", in Rooney's favour (source: Shropshire Star).
When I started reading, I thought he was having a go at Wayne, but entirely the opposite? Surprising.

Have allowed a day to pass but I'm still feeling really down about the game and Rooney's idiocy. I don't really care that England never win anything, but just want my national team play with a bit of passion and style so that it is not a tortuous chore watching them. Struggling to beat Wales (and pretty much anyone else) at home, struggling to get two points in two games vs Montenegro who only have a population about 100 times smaller than ours, either failing to qualify for tournaments or failing to turn up when we do qualify... we are supposed to be a country with a deep passion for the game we invented for god's sake I really don't want to watch England games anymore, which is sad.

When I started reading, I thought he was having a go at Wayne, but entirely the opposite? Surprising. Yeah I saw the interview on Sky and originally thought that he was slating Rooney but then realised he was moaning at the sending off, how he can do that is beyond me, a very straightforward red card Whenever Ive seen Rooney play over the past few years for Utd and England, I always thought that it looked like he had grown up a lot, not so many rash challenges and retalliations etc, however Friday clearly showed that he the red mist can come down and you could tell straight away he knew what he had done. The problem for him is the more times he does stuff like that, the more the opposition will target him because they know he is capable of reacting.

I don't think anyone (except maybe Joe Hart it seems) would defend Rooney. What he did was clearly stupid and petulant,. But a few points in response to what is mentioned on this thread. Rooney was instrumental in the 2 goals we scored on Friday. You can hardly say he did nothing. Capello has finally worked out (two years after it was clear in the world cup) that the Dutch/Spanish model is the way to play with a number 10 behind 2 wide men, a target man and two defensive minded central midfielders. Most teams in the world cup played 6 defensive players and 4 forward players, we played 5 and 5. Rooney is the only player who is comfortable in that number 10 role. The other slim possibilities are Gerrard, Young and maybe Walcott but all would be tempted back to their normal positions. No sane manager would drop Rooney and it would be a backward step to play two big men up front (e.g. Carroll/Welbeck) or even the old-favourite big-guy little-guy. If you're going to compare Carroll and Rooney then you need to weigh up which is more irresponsible - helping your team take the lead and then getting sent off, or preferring a few ales on a Saturday night to playing for your club/country. Ultimately the latter is the choice Carroll is making right now. His reaction showed that he instantly knew he had done something very stupid. He won't be the last to do something stupid either. Pass the tin hat/

I guess the decision would be made depending on how many games he would miss. If its three then I wouldn’t take him.
I thought he was past all this type of behavior. But then what’s happening with his dad must be having some effect. He wouldn’t be human otherwise.
But saying that, all things considered, you couldn’t have a pop at Capello if he did decide to leave him behind. Rooney is without doubt the best player England have but he is a gamble with his temperament. And there always seems to be something, some distraction. Whether it’s his inability to keep his Johnson in his trousers or this time around sommat with his family. It wouldn’t be the last time he finds himself in amongst a dross England performance where things are not going the way we hoped. You would expect your best player, your talisman to look to have some positive impact on the game, go grab it by the scruff of the neck and try as best as you can to inspire those around you to improve and get the game back on track. Rooney seems to head to the verges, gets frustrated, gets angry, lashes out (we’re seen it a fair few times now).
I guess he doesn’t have to cope with this sort of thing at Manchester, there can’t be too many games where they fail to perform as expected. England on the other hand is totally different, we do find ourselves in a fair few situations where things are not working out as expected. Just doesn’t seem to be able to cope with this at times. And you can’t rule him out doing that sort of thing again.
Capello will risk it though, sure he will take him...

I think the ban would be for the 2012 campaign itself which would end at the final. So if he is banned and doesn't go then he wouldn't be banned for any further games. That's how I think it works anyhows...
