..... until you lose it (Old song.)
Maybe I am looking at it through the eyes of an exile- but I love Shrewsbury.
Leah and I went by ' from Market Drayton by 'bus- and it was like I'd never been away. The bus went round by Morton Corbet- that old ruined hall- just like it used to when I went to shrewsbury with my mother- and later, as a teenager with my friends- all those years ago.
I've lived in Liverpool in the late 1960s- and it was VERY exciting, yes- it was all happening there. Met a lot of exciting people- all the bands then playing in Liverpool went to the Blue Angel Club afterwards. A lot of people who became famous afterwards were still around- and we met them regularly in The Philharmonic Pub. Heady, exciting days. But it was a case of loved the life and the excitement (at the time, anyway) but felt like a visitor to a strange planet. Never really happy with the surroundings.
I go to Shropshire- and I'm home. One quote from "Smart Shrewsbury" that I really like was this: " Shrewsbury is a town that other towns can only dream of being...."
Perhaps it's all the sweeter for having been away so long.
Maybe it's because I'm older now.
Yet, even as a teenager, I had a feeling for Shrewsbury when other towns left me cold.
What it needs is a University.

The sixth form is doing something about getting a uni. Or something to do with a uni on Barker Street. It was on the front of the Shropshire Star at the back end of last week.

Yep. Shrewsbury is a lovely Town to visit. It's not got the stuff I need for the next few years in terms of work etc. but it's a lovely place.

Shrewsbury can't have a university, because its not a city.
Only Cities can have Uni's, also a place has to have a cathedral to be a city. Obviously, the Roman Catholic one on Town Walls doesn't count.
Even Telford can't have a Uni, although they have a campus of Wolverhampton, which is for reasons unknown, a City.

not sure if thats right somerset, i dont think Keele is a city do you?, or Abersythwith? Shrewsbury should develop a Uni for local people. More Uni students like to go local so they can save money on accomodation. i think im right in saying that Shropshire is the only county in England (along with Cornwall) that hasnt got its own Higher Education establishment. (Im not counting the yam yam annex in proirslee here). Actually i know of a good site for a Uni building, its right next to our new stadium
